Women and Flowers. What's the attraction?

IMHO:

  1. They look nice.
  2. They are perishable, so you can give more flowers next time.
  3. It’s partly tradition - flowers say ‘I was thinking romantic thoughts about you.’
  4. Do women like flowers more than another present? Not really imhe, it’s just that flowers are are very convenient present, so get given a lot.

This is more a matter of opinion than fact, so I’ll move this thread to IMHO.

When a guy gives me flowers, the message it conveys to me is,

“I don’t really have any idea what you might like as an individual, but I heard somewhere that women like flowers, so here ya go.”

I always think it’s a sweet thought/gesture. However, when someone takes the time to send my absolute favorites (first and foremost would be those big, beautiful pinkish-orange Gerber daisies and second would be cream colored roses), then they are extra special. And I love them, but more importantly – usually, the ever-so-sweet SO – the sender.

I love the idea of cut flowers (hate the smell they acquire after a couple of days in a vase, though) because it makes things look so nice and complete. Yeah, I’m a sucker for either the along-side-the-road variety too or Wal*Mart’s cheapies. Oooh, even the discounted ones are better!

I love flowers. Sauron brings them to me every 3-5 weeks. I am sad when they die but I enjoy them so much while I have them. I ususally put them in my kitchen and it makes the room look brighter.

Also, as someone else mentioned, it is nice to know that he was thinking of me and brought them home to me.

I do hate to get flowers on the obligatory holidays. I have told him time and time again I don’t want them because TV or advertising has duped you into thinking because it is a certain day that you have to buy me flowers.

I’m not excessively sentimental, but I like flowers. It’s an almost detached appreciation, though-- I like the colors and textures and how they can both harmonize and contrast with one another. I like the variety of colors and shapes and textures within and across species. See, I occasionally make beaded and gemstone jewelry, and so I like seeing how color and texture and shapes play off one another. One way of seeing this is in flowers and plants.

That’s not to say I don’t like receiving them. After my high school graduation, every spare inch of my room had a vase full of flowers on in. I loved it. It added so much color and scent to my room. It didn’t matter at all that they were stinky and moldy a month later.

BTW, I bought Mother’s Day flowers for my mom online. There is thought to be put into it. You put as much thought into it as you care to. Seeing as it was the best I could do to get flowers to her, being 3000 miles away, I don’t think it’s fair to be too hard on the concept.

No, we won’t. Do you think we’re so stupid we don’t realize this, too? Even before the Internet, I was with Fisher Queen. Generic flowers on a generic occasion make me feel like a Generic Girl and their bearer tagged as an unimaginative stereotyper of women. I do like flowers, though, but they only have the romantic association if some thought has gone into their choice and there is no occasion that “demands” them. The message is “I was thinking of you in particular and you are worth doing something impractical and irrational for, just because it’s beautiful and would please you.”

Hmm. Perhaps I should qualify that “no occasion” remark. I am a sucker for getting a lei on my birthday. Not that I ever do.
