Women and "squirting", what's the straight dope?

The phenomenon of women “squirting” or shooting a mystery substance out of their ?urethras? or vaginas during sex is one that I do not understand. What is this substance that comes gushing out and where does it come from? Watching porn with squirting, I’ve seen large amounts of this liquid coming out of the woman.

I guess I just can’t understand how this stuff isn’t just urine? I know there are many women who swear it’s not pee. But where is this liquid stored in the female body? Is there a secret “squirting bladder” that is stimulated sexually? Or is this stuff really just pee?

The Master, of course, has addressed this mystery

Thanks for the link. However, it seems that this question remains largely unanswered. More studies need to be done.

I see this has been discussed here once or twice before.
 The search function doesn’t work for me or else I would have searched before posting.

A subsequent question I have is, is squirting more or less enjoyable than standard orgasms?

One of the threads had a study that examined women who squirt and it was found to be essentially urine being pushed out during sex.

It seems like a very simple experiment would clear this up (at least the urine question), given a urethral catheter, someone to place it, and a willing and capable subject.

The easiest way I have found to search is to click on the first link in ATMB “HOWTO search SDMB using Google”. Then, add the phrase to be searched to the end of the search box.

Use Google indexing, in the Google search box type site:straightdope.com followed by the string you’re searching for, eg:

Get busy writing up your research proposal. There’s grant money out there!

I’m on my phone at the moment, but I recall that the experiment has been done and it is not pee. The liquid is produced by the Skene’s gland and is no more urine than semen is.

Or rather, there is a liquid produced by the Skene’s gland and which is not urine. But urination during orgasm also exists, and is a lot more prominent and voluminous.

The study found in the links comes to the opposite conclusion.

From self-reported anecdotal data and errr ad hoc experimental results (:p) : no, it seems to be the other way around. Squirting tends to happen when the orgasm itself is above average.

Here’s a nice study of 7 women who reported they regularly experienced recurrent and massive fluid emission during sexual stimulation: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jsm.12799/full

Their conclusion, after rigorous study involving ultrasonographic bladder monitoring and biochemical analyses indicate that squirting is essentially the involuntary emission of urine during sexual activity, although a marginal contribution of prostatic secretions to the emitted fluid often exists.

Frankly, I think that pretty well settles the question.

Yes, yes, the study only had 7 women in it, but all 7 of them clearly were passing urine during their sexual fluid emission experiences, and frankly there’s no other place besides the bladder where such a large volume of fluid is going to be coming from.

Yep. This is the study that is in one of the links ?Dickerman? posted.

The original study link was provided by Leo Bloom in a 2015 thread.

[Soylent Green]Squirting is URINE![/Soylent Green]

I didn’t click all of the links, so forgive me if I’m being redundant. There was a study done years ago with people having intercourse in a fMRI or similar diagnostic scanner. It seems that, for some women, at least, intense genital stimulation can cause a copious amount of very dilute fluid (urine, if you must) to be passed from the kidneys to the bladder in a short amount of time. Further stimulation can cause pleasurable release of said fluid. I’m ignoring, for the time being, any input (or output, as you will) from the Skene’s glands.

So, is it pee? Not exactly. Not in the usual sense. Women (from many reports, scientific or no) who experience this seem to have it, even if they’ve voided just a few minutes prior to intercourse. It seems to be a (physiologically) deliberate, sexually-stimulated reaction.

As far as the sensations, I can only say that it is reported  as great, but somehow different from a standard orgasm. Some women might like to have both sorts in an extended sexual encounter.

Bottom line is, from my, er, research…it isn’t like stress-induced incontinence. It’s an interesting thing that can happen if the right buttons are pushed.

So, back to the laboratory.

Now, where’d I leave my safety goggles?
