Boy has this thread derailed since I hit refresh! I was going to reply to the original point that “fairer sex” is a term to mean morally, psychologically, as well as physically fairer (at least, until tanning salons and Snooki became popular). Now we all know none of that is absolutely true, but that is the sexist myth that society (and apparently, Monstro’s idiot cow-orker) has told itself.
I realize there are sensitive aspects being brought up in this thread, but if the snide comments back and forth don’t stop, this thread will be closed. This really isn’t a thread to try to be funny in, either, so refrain from making jokes without at least trying to imagine yourself in the position of your target, and acting accordingly.
No specific individuals noted or warned, yet.
[Mod hat off]
I’d always thought that the phrase “fairer sex” came not from any idea of frailty, but from the obsolete usage of “fair” meaning beautiful or attractive.
Not really–rape is about being sexually aroused by absolute power over another being. Specifically the lack of consent is a big turn-on for a rapist: it is the violation of another person’s will (regardless of who that person is, old or young) that is the goal for the sexual deviant. Violating a person’s will is the mark of a sociopath, and all rapists are sociopaths.
Again, its not about power but power helps. Its about getting off regardless of consent.
Power over the other person is not the goal, just a tool. This is a common misconception, IMHO. (Of course, none of us have been in the mind of the rapist to know for sure)
You sound awfully sure of your understanding of a rapist’s mentality. Would you like to explain how you know so well how a rapist thinks and what one wants or doesn’t want, or why you think this “common misconception” is false?
It does have to do with being young. Most rape victims are between 14-24 years of age, IIRC. Which correlates roughly not only with peak dating periods, but also with the period most often considered sexually desirable.
True enough, but it’s also true that women / girls of that age are most likely to be out alone at night and/or drunk, and may be physically weaker and generally look/act more vulnerable that women a few years older.
ETA: I’m a guy, and I’d just like to say I disagree both with Redpill’s position, and the way he’s delivering it.
“Common sense” is the idiot’s rebuttal to “documented research”. IOW, the entire world does not operate according to your perception of what “common sense” is because your common sense is skewed by your own individual experiences and biases.
FWIW, “attractiveness” and “horniness” are relevant to rape in the sense that the rapist views the woman as an object he desires and feels entitled to. There may also be underlying anger issues against women as well.
In case you are seriously this dense, I’ll put it in simpler words.
Being a guy, I don’t think its possible for a guy to rape a woman without him being physically attracted to her. His equipment won’t function. (Unless you want to classify erection free sex as rape, in that case yes, but those are rare)
(Going back to OP) Hence a more attractive woman is more likely to get raped, everything else being equal.
Yes, and that is the reason we look at research and evidence and don’t just rely on “common sense”, “gut feelings”, “intuition”, “that’s the way it’s always been done” and every other metaphor for “results that already agree with what I expect the outcome to be”.
