For what it’s worth, I proposed to my first husband, after we’d been together for five years, married him two years later, and we split up after nineteen years of being together. Worked really well; we’re still friends (and he’s casually dating my fiance’s ex-fiancee – a permutation that has the perverted eaters of brussels sprouts sharing meals, while we right-thinking people can avoid the vileness of sprouts).
Sometimes, a gal’s just gotta speak up.

I don’t know if you were looking for support, or just opinions. I am a 45 year old lady, and I personally wouldn’t want to be the one to ask.
It wouldn’t be “weird”. I’m just old fashioned I guess. I have the feeling, even if he said yes, and married me that “well yeah, but I had to ask him”. I would feel as if it “didn’t really count”.
Sort of an “if the man REAAAALLY loves her, he’ll propose”. That otherwise, one would always the sneaking feeling that he had to be “talked into it”.
I don’t know. But that’s just me, old lady with old-fashioned wishes. 
Oh jeez, I was too late wasn’t I?? Well!!! Super!!! best wishes, and I’m so glad that young women today are SO much braver than I am…
And you didn’t even have to wait 10 years.
