Woodward Dream Cruise - Car and Truck Buying, Reviews, News and More. | Jalopnik Every year for decades we have 2 Dream Cruises in Detroit Area. The first is a west side cruise that went down Telegraph a few weeks ago. This one is the Woodward ave, Cruise. It takes place from about noon to whenever. As you sit and watch classic car after classic car drives down the street. people line the streets watching and bars and restaurants set up outdoors. they sell beer ,wine and food up and down the street. There are many thousands of cars. People come from all over the country to watch it. Every stop light has several. Every car you remember from the 60s on is here.
Isn’t it, though? It fouls up traffic for an entire week on Woodward Avenue, and because there’s some economic benefit (real or perceived), other municipalities and major roads are trying to get in on it, so the classic car buffs go from city to city, street to street, just driving up and down the road in cars that are inefficient, sucking up gas.
Also, there’s entirely too much fun being had. That must be stopped, post haste.
Due to a really weird personal situation, I am temporarily staying with my friend’s dad. (Who is awesome, it works.) He grew up in the Detroit area and we watched part of this on TV last night. He reminisced a lot about his teenage years and cruising on Woodward.
But what struck me is that that was the whitest freaking crowd I have ever seen in Detroit.
There are people who live right around Woodward (like me). It’s a fucking pain in the goddamned ass when the Dream Cruise rolls around. And it’s not just Saturday. Friday is just as bad coming home from work and the entire week before I have to change my route home. And most Saturdays leading up to it are annoying as well.
The Old US 27 tour starts in Indiana and goes up into northern Michigan. This looks like quite the ride. One of the organizers was on the radio this morning. He’s thinking of billing it as the worlds longest parade route.
