I surely would not want to go on throughout the day without power… on my 23rd birthday. That would suck!..
For those of you who were unaware, the entire island of Oahu (ok, 90% of it) blacked out last night around 7pm HST due to a passing electrical storm. The power remained out the entire night and most of the morning. (It’s 215pm and I’m finally getting power back) In the nearly 17 years living in Hawaii this has never happened like this.
Was not a bad night though. Last night just after the power loss me and some friends met up and had a bbq at one friend’s apartment. Bunch of characters they were… The night ended with everyone telling Chuck Norris jokes. I’ll bet the neighbors were quite happy with us leaving since we were laughing so hard at 2am.
I think I’ll be more prepared next time though and at least have a flashlight. Or at least some batteries that work in my flashlight.
Meanwhile, you’re in Hawaii. So from a Midwesterner dealing with sub-zero windchills, blizzards, ice-rain, rain, then flooding from a (one-day only, mind!) warm spell (all in one week!)…ahhhhhh your mother wears combat boots!
Yay! I was on the North Shore earlier this month and got caught in the flash flooding. We managed to wend our way down to the airport, but by the time we got to Seattle, all of the roads out of the North Shore area were under water or had damaged bridges. Happy birthday, and best wishes for a speedy clean-up.
I was mentioning that to someone. It’d be pretty bad in an area like you described because even in the days we are in some people wouldn’t know how to start a fire.
Pull off mask, spew flame from skull… what’s the problem?
What do you mean life isn’t Mortal Kombat? Blasphemy!
…
You know, I think anyone watching TV was aware of the Hawaii power problems because President-elect Obama is there… I think we all got the crawl at the bottom of the screen (He’s okay!!!) for the first few hours of the morning.
So what did you do while the power was out? I imagine there’s got to be lots of entertainment there in Paradise even without electricity.
The initial plan was to watch a movie. That didn’t go smoothly. So I picked up 2 friends then headed over to another friend’s pad. We had an endless supply of appetizers cooked on the bbq and we just joked around all night talking about anything from work-life, magnetics, Euro-travel, and then concluded with 1 hour Chuck Norris jokes. My buddy, whose house we were at, had several pages of them so we all kinda took turns reading off what we thought were good jokes. The best of the night was “The reason Waldo is hiding… is because of Chuck Norris”
It was pretty creepy driving back home. It was about 13 miles of road in pitch black (3am) and I only encountered about 5 cars. It felt as if zombies were going to jump out of the darkness and start attacking the car.
I was telling my friend while I was giving him a ride home. Man, with a little preparation, we could have totally pulled off a acting as raging zombies in the streets of Waikiki. I figure about 7 or 8 of us act as zombies then go surround one friend and start acting like were eating him… He’d then get up and we’d all continue running down the streets like mad-men making bizarre sounds and acting zombie-like. Wish I thought of that one sooner. Probably would have ended up being shot by the police in the process though.
