So the IT people just wiped my HD clean, debugged a few thousand viruses, and handed me back my laptop, with my documents restored. Of course, they claim they can’t (or it isn’t policy) to restore everything I had on the laptop, stuff like Google desktop, that neat little floating ruler someone had recommended here for my painting, the driver to my scanner, etc. I don’t get this, but I’m not here to bitch about IT policy (“If we have to work on your machine, we will make you regret it”) but to ask how to find stuff to re-install myself.
For one: before turning the laptop over to their control, I used to have in WORD 2003 an odd thing, hard to describe, that when I highlight a word or phrase and then right-clicked (i think it was right-clicking) a little ghost would appear above the phrase, a mini-toolbar of sorts that had all kinds of useful stuff, an underlining tool, a highlighting in colors tool, so I wouldn’t have to move the cursor completely up the page to access this stuff. Now it’s gone. Anyone know how I can get it back?
For another, I had WORD set up so that it would automatically correct most typos, misspellings, etc without my doing a damned thing, also very useful. Now that’s gone.
If you can come up with ways to resinstall this stuff, I’ll give you more to do for me. Hmmm, that doesn’t sound like much of an incentive, does it? How about I throw in some cookies?
