That was totally counter intuitive to me (design-wise). To me, if the word you put floats to the top, that word would be higher alphabetically. When you’re typing in the middle and you have the word above it, graphically it looks like that (to me, at least).
http://www.crossword-dictionary.com/ is worth its weight in gold. That being said, I still don’t think I’ve gotten higher than 3000. I have to believe that there is a fair amount of luck in here, unless you believe in clairvoyance.

Are you doing your guesses by halves? I start with MOUSE – then if the word is earlier than that, I go halfway between “A” and “M,” usually with “FIELD” – then divide that range in half (DOUBT or ICIER), etc.
If you work by chunks like that, you can narrow in on your range fairly quickly.
