"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 1)

Whose mamma? My mamma? Yo mamma?

Needed all six guesses today

I am really stuck today. I’ve got two letters in the right place, and I’ve been stuck for probably an hour. My brain hurts.

Of the possibilities, if it is indeed true they will use a word with only two letters, that’s the most probable. In my spoiler, I also mentioned “esses,” which I have used, but it’s probably not “fun” enough, slightly esoteric, and a plural.

I may as well have played this in hard mode, but, hey, all greens!

ADIEU
AFTER (changing from my usual strategy, since I already had two letters in the right place)
ALLEY
ABBEY

Okay, I gave up. I had the first and the fourth letter, and had resorted to going through all the remaining letters of the keyboard, typing them in all possible configurations…but I got worn out before I got to the bottom row. I can tell myself maybe I would have gotten it.

4 ! (13 Jan 2021)

DEATH
RAVEN
ALLEY
ABBEY

There’s at least one other. I tried it. (I see that others have, also.)
Five, for Jan 13 apparently 208:

ADORE
AGENT
ASKEW
ALLEY
ABBEY

Woke up in the middle of the night, now can’t get to sleep (it’s very hot here) so did today’s puzzle. Or, what is for most of you, tomorrow’s puzzle.

Scrolling up through the thread makes me think you guys are terrible at Tetris.

I’d already ruled out L on my second guess.

IRATE
PLEAD
ASHEN
ABBEY

Maybe it’s confirmation bias but they seem to love words that end in Y. That helped me a bit with my solve.

Ah. Missed that, sorry.

“I realize I crossed a line. And I surely, surely will never do anything remotely close to this again. I fucked up,” tweeted Shakked. He goes on to explain that

“Wordle” itself wasn’t trademarked and that Wardle’s game was similar to Lingo , an older TV game show with a similar word-guessing mechanic. Shakked also says that he planned to expand on Wordle with more functionality and change the overall design of the app to less resemble Wardle’s own game, had he been able to before Apple removed his app from the store.

The aftermath of the blowback seems to have soured Shakked (who had previously complained on Twitter about how “[s]hameless copy/pasting ideas/features will get you nowhere”) on the idea of copycat apps in the future. “I’ll go back to creating apps based on my completely, evergreen, original ideas and never fuck with anything remotely like this again,” Shakked’s thread concludes.

Zach Shakked did not respond to request for comment.

Definitely can have repeat letters - the first day I tried the word had a set of duplicate letters.

Tough one today!

IIRC, in one of the articles, I read that almost 1/3 of the solutions contain a repeat letter.

I guess that’s why I had such a rough time today. It was my first repeating letter puzzle.

Phew!

FAVOR ← not much to start with… let’s move A to the beginning
AGENT ← two vowels, but no T… Hmmmm
APPLE ← I think I’m going down… don’t think it starts with AE, so…
ACHED ← haven’t tried an S yet, but the only one I can think of with an S has three…
ASSES

At this point, I had to catch the bus to jury duty, which probably saved me, because I couldn’t think of any word to make out of the A & E I had and the odd assortment of B, M, J, K & Y (where I concentrated in favor of the the rarer Q, W, X, Z combo). So then I got home and looked hard at the letters for five minutes, and one possibility came to me:

ABBEY

I had to cheat a little bit on this one because I got to 5 and could not think of a word that fit. I ended up pulling a list of scrabble words and eliminated everything that wouldn’t work. ABBEY was literally the only word left.
