This one took longer than I thought it would, but I got there. Still in the Three Club today.

POISE → Some good vowel eliminations, at least. Try a word with an A…
TREAD → Should have taken a page from Bullitt and gone with EARTH here to try the H. I like an -ER ending, shuffle around A & T to get…
AFTER → So, RET?A or RETA? (maybe RETAG?), but if E is first it’s EATR? or E?TRA, the last would be…

Doesn’t seem to be a theme…

Took a while. As with others posting here, I had in my mind that there might be some sort of Christmas Eve theming–which slowed down my guessing process.

EXTRA
This one was more about eliminating possible positions for the three letters I got at step one.
This seems like a good idea to me–it would do a lot toward eliminating inadvertent spoiling.
There’s no particular advantage in playing the game early in the 24-hour period as opposed to later. So the only real objection the NYT might come up with would be ‘the way it is now, everyone knows “midnight, my time” is the time the new game is available, and if we changed it everyone would have to memorize a new availability time.’
But, again: how many players prioritize playing right after the new game becomes available? (Maybe it’s a huge number; I’ve no idea.)
If insomnia strikes (and it strikes me fairly often), it’s handy to have the new day’s Wordle up at 2 or 3 am. But it wasn’t like I never had insomnia before Wordle existed, so I’m sure I could manage if the new game wasn’t already available at midnight.
Midnight GMT is 4 pm where I live. I’m usually a morning solver, but I’d like to keep the option to play anytime throughout the day. One could potentially play at 3:55 today and then 4:05 tomorrow, and oops, I just lost my streak. That would piss me off.

After three I was left with JUDGE, FUDGE, and PUDGE. I figured only two were likely so decided to take my chances.

DUMPY - figured BUDGE, FUDGE, or JUDGE
BEFOG - which starting letter. None, so it has to be:
JUDGE
After 3 guesses I was pretty sure it was either fudge or judge or budge so used a throwaway word, fable, to ensure I got it in 5.

I should know that when my clamp store opener hits almost nothing, “__dge” is likely. I remembered “__nky” and “qu___” but just totally spaced on dge.

JUDGE
Two mistakes here. DUNCE was a foolish guess, as it’s kind of a stand-alone (i.e. no other _UNCE or DUN_E words). Then I shouldn’t have plopped down BUDGE at four without looking for other _UDGE words.
At that point, it was either eat the six or take a 1 in 3 chance of losing my 335 day streak.
At least I’m not the only one eating a six today.

EXTRA → Slow start. Can’t think of a word to knock off two other vowels, so…
SMILE → Should I try a second E? Or other vowels? Almost tried COUPE here, but fortunately I went with…
FUDGE → …which turned out to be a trap! Only two other words I can think of, though, so I believe I’ve got it…
NUDGE → Not that one, so it must be…
BUDGE → Dang it! Missed at least one. Look at consonants again… OK, I think I’ve got this
JUDGE
Phew is right. I would have lost if I had tried COUPE at 3.
Joining the ranks of the disappointed today.
