SLANT
LITER
MOTEL
HOTEL had already been used, and BETEL seemed unlikely.
*Dafuq?! LITER isn’t a Wardle word?? That’s a very common word - they’ve been selling soft drinks in 2-liter bottles and so forth for decades now.
*If the NYT can add freakin’ LORIS to the list, they durn well better have added LITER. I’ve been using it as my second word in certain situations, expecting it would give me a shot at the 2. Who knew?

Who knew? Anyone who consulted either of at least two on-line lists. But I think the
lists are of Wardle’s words. You pointed out that NY Times has added a few non-Wardle words.
Wardle did NOT have many words ending in S, e.g. Cries or Pints. Maybe similar pruning
threw away words ending in ‘er’ or ‘ed.’ (Even when perhaps, as in Liter, the ‘er’ is not a suffix.)
Note that two posters after you got Par instead of Birdie because they asked Towel – which
is on the already-used list.
The game would be MUCH better if they followed your suggestion and reused words
after a month. I do NOT like consulting these lists. BUT – call it a fetish or a perversion –
if I play the game at all I won’t impose certain restrictions on myself.
Here’s the list, provided by RTFirefly, of the 17 known non-Wardle Wordle words:
ATRIA, BALSA, BEAUT, GOFER, GUANO, KAZOO, LASER, LORIS, MOMMY, NERVY, PIOUS, PRIMP, SNAFU, SQUID, TAUPE, TIZZY, UVULA.
Given that they’re missing common words like Tiled and Liter, these additions seem like
odd choices. No less than five of the 17 are marked “Informal” in dictionaries, and/or restricted
to one dialect.
And Uvula is easily conflated with its near-anagram, referring to a different anatomical feature
(and which is unsurprisingly excluded from Wardle’s list!)

HOTEL, MOTEL, Holiday Inn… Had to be one of those three.
Wardle is British, no? Is LITRE on his list?
No, it isn’t.

Could have been a two but guessed wrong.
What does “missing” mean here? Tiled, liter (and litre) are all accepted as valid guesses.
Oh, I see, valid answers… revealed in the source code? Seems a bit stupid

Grind was my choice in #1595 with the same start.
After #2, Rapid and Acrid were also possible, but both were Already-Used.

Two 3s in a row! This was another one where, with neither vowel being in the center, my guess was that most likely they were not together.
