SUMAC → Slow start. Can I place the A?
AORTA → Nope. And struck out on the other additions as well. L & N are still out there, I can try one (and two other vowels) with
LEAKY → I’m really having bad luck with my consonants. OK, to try N, we can try ?ANE?, and that means a possible past-tense verb
WANED → I’ve eliminated so many consonants I think there’s only one possible left
WAXEN
After my third guess, there were 65 possibles remaining, a significant number of them valid, so I was right to try the ending I did - especially since Scoredle chose the same word that I did for that situation. There were four nonbogus possibles that didn’t have that ending, so I would have been touch and go had I not hit four out of five with that guess. Scoredle also bogeys the puzzle, but has to hit a 50-50 putt to avoid the double.

Yesterday’s random start word (INDEX) would have scored me an eagle today. Today’s random start word would most likely have led to a birdie yesterday. Funny how that goes sometimes…

Had the same start on #1649, and followed with the peculiar-looking
Skull, then Birdying with Spool. I noted at the time that RTFirefly
had the exact same result except for the Slate/Slant substitution.
That Christma Eve game was recent enough that the list of words I generated
is in the same scratchpad I’m using now; and I see that (when already-used words
are crossed off), K, U, and double-L are indeed very likely.
Skull is a good sleuth, as RTFirefly also deduced.
