You might prefer quordle. I think it uses the same dictionary for legal guesses as for legal words. Personally, i like that wordle answers are curated. And would be annoyed if they didn’t let me guess weird words when searching for letters.
Put me in the camp of preferring a much wider range of allowable guesses than legit answers. For instance, there are plenty of words that are known to people in a particular profession or avocation but aren’t well known to the public at large. They shouldn’t be solutions, but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be allowable guesses.

after my first word, i think the only possibilities were clang, clank, and chant. I wanted to start with one of the CL words so as to know the answer if guess 2 was wrong.

In hindsight, PLANK would have given me the tap-in par and a chance at a birdie. But my sleuth word also led to par, and PLANK was not the solution, so no harm done.

LEANS → Hey, not bad. Pretty much has to be ?LAN?, no R, D and the WoFcons gone (save for double N, unlikely), lot of words with K for that end letter (hope no more than four!) and one with leading C and two possible ends

Happy with this four. My followup was nowhere near Scoredle’s top 120, but it eliminated enough that I was safe in the event of a trap, which I managed to avoid. Scoredle’s followup seems less productive, but the third guess takes it down to a virtual tap-in (only other possible is thorougly bogus).
