This parks department employee was suspended for two days without pay for not engaging the mayor of Deerfield Beach Florida in conversation. She just worked away at her job while the mayor interacted with other people. The mayor apparently thinks this needs punishment. I hope the lady gets a big settlement in the future.
That’s really f’ed up. I’m glad it got some press…here’s hoping the mayor gets some righteously deserved scorn for arrogance.
What is the Mayor, God?
I don’t think God expects daily acknowledgement of his presence.
Some sects say God expects exactly that, and an expression of gratitude as well. I guess they figure He is entitled to be egotistical.
So she didn’t interrupt the conversation going on between two of her superiors in the department, essentially, and that’s disrespectful? Seems to me that’s pretty much the epitome of respect, to get on with her job and not butt into something that probably wasn’t really her business.
When I worked retail and the regional manager came to visit, I didn’t go tag along with him and the store manager while they discussed business. I had enough sense to wait until they addressed me personally. (if they ever did)
Sounds like a real ego trip from the mayor.
Did you hear that they’re really grateful now that there’s a psychiatrist up in Heaven? Seems God thinks he’s Mayor Peggy Nolan.
Speaking of Peggys, don’t you so think this is how Peggy Hill would react if she were somehow elected mayor?
Exactly. I’ve nodded to the CEO when I’ve passed him in the hall, but if he’s deep in a conversation with a VP, I just slip on by.
Looks like there’s an update. Seems likely that it’s the Director Edmunds, not the mayor, with the problem.
Power trip, power trip, little man on a power trip! o/`
I was always taught (and this may well be a racial thing, when I think about it, because my parents disagreed on it) that when you have a situation of people with some type of rank, the person with the higher rank is the one with the privilege of initiating an interaction. Also, you do not interrupt other people who are in conversation, nor linger around and wait for a break in a conversation just to say “hello.” (If you have some business with one of them, that’s different.)
Now her boss says it’s a personnel violation. She seems to have profaned the the man when she was given the suspension. This of course only happened after suspending her. I still hope she gets a settlement and the boss gets some penalties. She’s smiling for the second article. The boss will likely dock her for that.
Oh, I think Edmunds is going to get slapped around. I’m not normally pro-union, but I’m glad this woman has someone with big balls willing to go to bat for her.
Why is it the tiny little towns that have the power-tripping employees? Can you see Bloomberg throwing a shitfit because some sanitation worker didn’t salute him in the subway?
Not to mention that the mayor herself doesn’t seem too happy about what happened.
The union should formally request a clarification: Does Edmunds prefer city workers to use the Hitler Salute or genuflection?
That’s wacky. How many people even know what the mayor of their town looks like?
I know, but I live in a very small town.
Well, I don’t know Bloomberg, but I could imagine Guiliani doing it.
The union should say the mayor needs to make sure the employee gets her two days pay, an apology and all reference of this incident removed from her employment record. Further the Interim Director needs to receive a formal and public reprimand for failing to abide by the terms of the labor contract. Failure to do so will result in making sure this stays in the paper as long as possible including calling for a full review of all disciplinary actions taken by management.
God what an idiot. Setting aside the fact he was being a dick. He got caught improperly disciplining a subordinate and violating the union contract to boot. He’s created a political and legal headache for the city and he’s the ‘acting director’. Shut the hell up apologize and sit down. Don’t make scene. Don’t make it worse by further dickishness. Because the easiest solution is to make sure you no longer ‘act’ as the director.
Although the picture was learly taken at the same time as the one from the first article. I have no doubt that was intentional on the part of the photographer and/or journalist. “OK, let’s get one frowning for the first story, and get one smiling for when the issue gets resolved.”
This is another one of those stories where, before reading a single word, i said to myself, “I’m betting that this is in Florida.” The tinpot despots that run local government down there are beyond belief sometimes.
