Working at home (on the internet)

I was just curious if this is even possible or if there is some way to do this.

Info about me, I have graduated from a University with a degree in International Studies and I speak Spanish and German. The reason I ask is because I’ll be going to Europe to graduate school, and it would be very hard to get a job in the local economy because of the various rules regarding foreigners. I’m talking about Denmark by the way.
I know all of the basic Office programs and I’m a fast typer. When I transcribe something from paper to computer I am really fast.

I have thought of a lot of things.

Web Design (this is hard to get into and I’d have to learn a lot ot offer it as a professional servic)

Writer (again, not very likely to happen as I’m not a writer, but I just put this because it seems like something that wouldn’t require you to be present somewhere.

Teaching English? This seems like a possibility and I have a lot of experience correcting foreigner’s english papers, etc. Or maybe just offering correction services? I think I could do this independently, but it would be hard to find customers by just putting up a website, I imagine. I could offer video-conferenced private lessons, of course.

Transcribing things? I wonder if there is any kind of secretarial work that can be done through the internet. I’d certainly like to do that.

The reason why I am asking is that in graduate school, I’ll need another source of income, and I’d like to have something that was independent of my location. My parents will provide I guess some kind of help, but I’d like to become as independt as possible despite the fact that it would be hard to work legally. I’m not above any kind of work, really. I don’t know how possible this is for me, but I don’t have many qualifications beyond my Bachellor’s degree, and searching Google for “work online” or somesuch seems to show a lot of bogus looking stuff.

I’m not looking to get rich or something, and I’m not looking for some way to make tons of money fast, etc, just looking for a way to earn money over the internet in a way that would be done in a normal office.

I quit my job as a radiation therapist to trade stocks on the internet at home. I’ve only been doing it for a few months now, so we’ll see how it goes. There are plenty of folks out there who have been successful at doing this for years (and I’m working hard to be one of them).

Medical transcription is something to consider. Many medical transcriptionists download their assignments from the Internet and upload their finished work.

Due to illness, I have to work in my home if I’m going to work at all. I was fortunate enough to get onboard with Google Answers before they stopped accepting applications for new Google Answers Researchers. If things ever open up again, Google Answers provides a great opportunity to make a modest amount of money while working hours and days of your choosing.

Mrs. Voyager is a writer who has worked at home for 20 years. The Internet has made her life much easier, cutting down trips to the library and saving a bundle on postage and phone calls.

I’d search for translation jobs. They would be text based, have no need to be in an office, and sound like they’d fit your skills.

My company really pushes work at home - I know people whose jobs have moved far away, but get to do them without moving, which makes them more likely to stay and saves the company money. I work probably 5 - 6 hours a week at home, mostly on early morning calls I’m too lazy to go to the office for. (Not counting past 7 pm work at home, of course.) It is not a strange thing to want these days, I bet you’ll find something. Go for it.

Wow, thanks a lot guys! This is really encouraging!

But… where would I go to find jobs like this? I know a good place to look for a real job on the internet, but the problem I have is that I don’t know where to look. Is there a centralized place to look for ways to work from home?

Medical Transcriptionist?

Does that require some kind of training?

You must be very well-versed in medical terminology. There are courses, both online and off, which can get you up to speed on the words. If you have good typing skills and a good ear for language, it’s not difficult to learn Medicalese.

Medical or Legal transcriptionists are good professions, I have a sister in law who does legal stuff. Try googling for information but beware of services that want to train you for a fee. I think your best bet would be to contact any lawyers or doctors you know and ask their advice.

If you want to do web design find small businesses with something to sell that don’t currently have websites. Make a deal where they pay for the hosting (which is cheap for a small business) and you handle the rest in return for a cut of the profits. You’ll find that the design of the site is only a small part of what it takes to get it noticed but the better you do the more money everyone involved will make. Once you do it for one company (or person) the next will be easier and faster.

A couple of companies hire people to score standardized test essays online. It isn’t full time work, but can be a nice supplement.
