Phones, AHarris, not lockers. In many companies the desks and chairs are already in place but need to get phones, computers et al set up once they’re going to be occupied.
There you go, it’s been so long since I’ve been more than a Christmas Catholic I’d forgotten that. I was trying to remember about the Sundays, I knew I was forgetting something because I remember lighting the candles on the wreath and adding a new one each Sunday…
Lockers were mentioned in second paragraph (which I didn’t quote).
Still, the poster should have their manager follow-up because while computer etc are the most obvious signs, there is a potential for more serious issues in the background. It could also be that they are handling it the same way we do and that this equipment is scheduled to be setup tomorrow.
Whatever became of that project where a procedure was going to be changed that would break all of the scripts that had credentials hard coded into them?
I think I’m remembering that correctly. You were sending out frequent emails warning users that the change was coming.
Oh. And I need access to the table with the customer ID in it.
There still are not enough desks set up at work; Thursday I had to change desks twice to find something that worked BECAUSE the computer I was using crashed in the middle of a call. And I work at a call center. I’ve been sent home early every day so far this week, which is trying my fucking patience and I hope IT gets shit together and fixes these desks.
I need some advice. I’m the Administrative Assistant for a small group in a larger office. We’ve been here for 10 years. Everybody knows the AA is the “bottom of the totem pole” but we are the ones who ensure that the office runs smoothly and that everyone is organized and has what they need to do their own jobs. There is a thoughtful person here who, every Christmas, gets everyone to sign a card and contribute towards a gift for me - always a gift certificate for the spa. Which I really appreciate.
Last Christmas they gave me the card & gift and I was very thankful, of course. I thought the gift certificate said $60 but when I looked closer I realized that it was $30. There are 15 people who could have contributed - that’s $2 per person. After 10 years of apparently being “the best admin ever” it turns out that I am worth only two dollars to these people. $30 won’t even cover a manicure. I’ve seen their salaries - they make about twice what I make. In previous years the gift card has been around $60.
Should I tell the thoughtful person to not bother with a gift certificate this year? Because honestly I was kind of insulted. Or should I wait to see what happens this year, STFU and be thankful I got anything?
Well, in my opinion, this. None of them owes you a gift, you are doing your job and they are doing theirs, and if you don’t like your salary you should try to get a better position, there or elsewhere.

Okay. Thanks.
I agree with Roderick, but I’ll also commiserate. A whole bunch of people making excellent salaries not coughing up much at all for the person who does all their shit work for them - that doesn’t show much appreciation. I’d say look at the other aspects of your job and take this one as it comes - consider anything at all just a little bonus.
Thank you, Cat Whisperer, I appreciate that. I can’t complain at all about my job - it’s what I went to school for and I really do enjoy it. I’d be insane to complain about anything, I just felt a bit slighted. I figure I’ll see what, if anything, this year brings and adjust my attitude accordingly.
Let me moderate my post a bit: if you are one of those admin people who is always helping everyone with a smile and going the extra mile for them and stuff like that, then they probably are dicks not to do something nice (and substantial) for you at least once a year. If I were one of those folks, I would prefer to recognize your birthday (just in case you didn’t celebrate Xmas for any reason).

Frankly, I’m expecting the worst with the furniture that will be assigned, and the position in the room of said furniture, over none of which do we peons ever have any choice. But, as my mother used to say, don’t cry until you’re hurt, so I will wait and see. It’s all supposed to happen next Friday (yes, I will be working that day), so it won’t be a long wait.

Well, the day has arrived and the furniture is slowly turning up. Miracle of miracles (maybe it’s the season) the facilities person has taken my sketch of where the workstations should go and is following it. And the furniture that has appeared so far is not bad. So, perhaps happy holidays after all.

Just don’t do like one of my former bosses did - ask me to organize something for my own Administrator’s Day lunch.
Really? That’s hilarious!
To promote departmental unity and team spirit, my soon-to-be-ex-coworkers have been required to come up with multiple ideas for activities that can be done, like birthday cakes (once a month for that month’s birthdays), bowling, cookout, etc.
However, any money required to make these activities happen is required to come out of their own pockets. The department has no funds allocated for that kind of thing.
Promoting unity through enforced payouts towards enforced team spirit events. Whee. So glad I’ll be done in a few weeks.
That’s pretty much how things work at my workplace (cubicle setup not happening until the last day).
I would not tell them to skip the gift certificate. Use it as an opportunity to demonstrate (in your own mind if not in any one else’s mind) that you are more gracious than they are. They think they are being nice; this would not be an appropriate opportunity to correct them. Remember, it is better to give than to receive (I’m atheist, but that is still a valid moral concept). If the opportunity arises where you are visibly contributing to someone else’s present (for whatever occasion) then you can demonstrate appropriate giving.
Yup - I just “neglected” to plan my own lunch, and it was never mentioned again.
When I was working for the eye doctors, they were very nice but very clueless. I happened to mention that Admin Asst. day was coming up and that I wanted seafood for lunch (I was one of those vocal vegans in those days). Bosses joked about how they were going to bring in fish sticks and all was good. Until one of the bosses wives heard about it and said that while I was the only Admin, there were other support people who also deserved lunch on that day.
The end result was that all of us support people had to use our lunch hour to eat meat filled samwiches and listen to them telling us how much they loved us. :smack:
What kind of seafood does a “vocal vegan” eat – kelp?
That’s my guess. (WAG: Joke, because for many people, “vegan” = “you don’t eat meat” = “…oh, do you eat seafood?”)
