Bleah, this is the sound of a tank not doing his job. I REALLY hate healing for tanks like that (“What, someone’s been shooting shadow bolts at you for thirty seconds? Sorry, I was too busy hitting consecrate over and over again to notice.”)
It’s good to ask before you roll Need, or at least mention that you’re going to, because you are pushing an “I win” button. This means that setting an example and a precent for checking with the rest of the group before you do so is important, because the next thing that drops could be something you *really *want.
Take that argument a step further and you’ve got everyone rolling Need on everything, because hey, they can use the money, and the gear would be replaced soon on the person who needs it, anyway, and it’s just a PUG so it’s not like you owe these people anything. Basic courtesy is **never **a bad idea. What is ***so difficult ***about taking two seconds to type or say, “Looks like I"m the only person who can use that and it’s an upgrade–mind if I click Need?” that people are flipping out like they were just required to fill out a 20-page form in triplicate to use the bathroom?
I don’t do this anymore, and nowhere in my post did I advocate doing it–but there was a time when this was the standard, and I was just giving some background on what I was taught to do when I first started playing the game, so that people would understand that I may be a bit more strict about looting etiquette than some.
ETA:
Then the tank wasn’t doing their job. Part of tanking is learning how to deal with mixed packs (hint: the melee will follow you over to the caster, or you can silence-pull the caster to you), and you’re not doing the tank (or anybody who gets stuck with this jerk in the future) any favors by enabling that kind of poor tanking.
It sounds like you have managed the HOLY GRAIL of guild composition. 100 account guild with steady raiders and no drama? I read about that once in a book but it was only theory… like dark matter and alternate universes.
The only reason I thought it would take a hardcore guild is because a loot council is likely to give more upgrades to mission critical players (tanks and healers) than to DPS and DPS tends to make up the majority of any raid (or any guild) so you end up with something that is more equitable for them unless they all have a common vision and that usually means someone who is more hard core. I figure that tanks and healers make up no more than 25% of the raid and with a loot council, they tend to get about half the loot (until you start farming content). This works fine if you are always at the end game because you are likely to farm content for a while (until the next expansion) but if your guild is on Naxx and you only farm content long enough to get your guild ready for Ulduar, there are going to be a lot of DPS that are not going to be anywhere near fully Naxx geared before the guild can start taking on Ulduar content.
And that is why they should let you see around any gravestone.
I guess I’ve just been very lucky in my guilds–I didn’t realize how really rare this is. I figured that people like me would just gravitate towards guilds like mine, away from the whiners.
There isn’t usually a lot of overlap between tank/DPS gear and healer/DPS gear, fortunately. Tanking plate is clearly for tanks, and we don’t have any main-spec Bare Duridz Lolz to worry about. It’s a little fuzzier for casters, but pieces are usually pretty clearly intended to be better for DPS or healers. Even when there is a piece that could go either way, we don’t automatically pass the item to the tank or the healer–it’s just another point to factor in. **If **two people can use an item and **if **they have the same attendance/effort and **if **they’ve gotten the same amount of loot recently… then I’d vote the item to the healer/tank over the DPS. But it’s not an auto-win.
“Best for the raid” doesn’t always mean “biggest increase in DPS/HPS/TPS or survivability”–it’s also about making sure that *all *of your raiders feel appreciated and rewarded.
If we’re just barinstorming stuff that would be nice, I think it would be nice to allow flying mounts/flightform on Azeroth. I think it would be nice to make flight point activate on your account so that you don’t have to do as much running around on your alts for the sake of getting flight points.
I’ll admit that I never even gave those stories that much respect. I always thought they were more like unicorns and fairies.
Someone posted a video in this thread, I believe (though I’m not going to look for it) showing just why there will probably NEVER be flight in Old World WoW. There is a LOT of scenery in a LOT of zones that won’t stand up under too much poking around. Hell, Stormwind is about 50% illusion, only looking like a real (though small) city because of perspective and a lot of pokery-jiggery with sightlines.
Seriously, there is an awful lot of empty space/untextured space/nothingness with floaty towers and such in it, only seen from in front of another, more ‘fixed’ piece of landscape. They’d have to put in probably several tens of thousands of man-hours of programming and bug-fixing to make Old World flight-ready, and they are NOT going to bother with that when they’ve got a steady stream of eagerly awaited new content to get out the door.
We’ve discussed this before; apparently this would require re-building large areas of Azeroth that are essentially just facades at the moment.
There was an article on just this subject a while back at WoW Insider:
Here’s a link to the story, which contains the video they’re commenting on.
I tell PUGs that I intend to roll need on anything that is an upgrade for me. I have also stopped PUGing with rogues. It all started when I was healing in a PUG and a nice leather DPS belt dropped. The rogue in our group rolled need and so did I. I don’t get a lot of gear for my DPS spec from raiding. The rogue got really bent out of shape like he was entitled to all leather DPS gear because noone would be rolling on leather caster gear. It got to the point where I had to switch to my DPS gear and put on the belt before the rogue would shut up.
Never mind. I thought you were saying that you had a DPS toon that you were rolling for on your healing toon. :smack:
Ninja looting has taken on a whole different meaning in WOW. In EQ ninja usually referred to players that would click on the mob as soon as it died (frequently before it even hit the ground) to loot the drop contrary to loot rules established by the group. Now that you get to set loot rules and everyone gets to roll on loot, I don’t see how it is possible to ninja stuff.
This is why when I lead a PUG, I always say at the beginning “need if you need, otherwise greed.” While you’re leveling, gear just really isn’t that big a deal IMO. Even if a really neat rare drops that requires the exact level you happen to be at, odds are it’s going to be replaced within 7 or 8 levels.
Now you’re just being silly. If gear is good for you and would be a shard or vendor trash to me, by all means take it. I’ll get those 3 gold from my next few quests.
Yeah, that is dumb. Almost as dumb as people flipping out over someone “ninjaing” a piece of ramps gear that’s omg so good at this level!!! Dude, you’re in your low 60’s. You’re not going to be raiding with that gear anytime soon. Let it go. Remember, it’s just a game.
I seem to be getting some “gifts” in the form of increased numbers in my unarmed combat skills. is this part of the Fire Festival, or just because I levelled to 25?
Thanks
Quasi
Unless you very specifically pointed out that you were planning to roll on melee dps gear at the beginning, I’d have been pissed, too. Main spec should be priority over offspec, and if you want to do it differently you have to be crystal clear, not just, “I’m rolling need on any upgrades.” Most people would not look favorably on someone rolling outside their role in the group unless they’d clearly outlined what they were doing at the beginning.
So, had an interesting night in our guild tonight. One of the newer recruits turned out to be a little bit annoying and immature. That was okay for a little while. What got me the most was him constantly asking where things (like major cities) were. We’re talking about a level 80 character here, not someone exploring new territory. Personally, I’ll just look things up on Thottbot or Allakhazam to avoid bothering anyone. Then, earlier today he wanted to go on a raid with everyone. The raid organizer says that’s fine, we just need to test your DPS. Well, the guy starts in on the bragging. “My gear’s so awesome, I’ll pwn every one of you!” So eventually someone agrees to dual him in front of Orgrimarr. I think to myself “Awesome! I’ve got to check this out!” And got there as quick as I could. 5 minutes later, the guy still hasn’t shown up. Finally, about 15 minutes later, there he is. Dual flag drops and… he gets his ass handed to him. At about half health he starts spamming “WAIT A MINUTE STOP STOP WAIT A MINUTE I WASN’T READY!” And goes on about how rude the guy was for not stopping when he obviously wasn’t ready. So, after being healed, round two starts… and ends just as quickly as round 1. Big surprise there, huh?
So then later tonight, someone in the guild mentions the Ventrillo server is up again. New guy apparently doesn’t know what Vent is. A little fishy, but I guess someone could get to 80 without hearing of Vent. Then he asks where to get it. Someone directs him to the website. And he asks where to get it. Someone, again, says to download it from the website. And he asks how to download it. By this point we’re all screaming “Hit the damn download button!,” and somehow he’s still not getting it.
At this point, I’d had enough. I send a whisper off to the guild leader “So, this guy has managed to make it to 80, and can’t figure out how to download Vent?”
Apparently I wasn’t the only one. 2 seconds later, guild leader says in guild chat: “Okay, that’s it. I just had the whole guild whisper me about you. You’re done.” Annoyance banned, and the whole guild cheers.
And now, I’m really confused. The guy couldn’t find the download button on a website, despite a whole guild telling him where it was. I’m inclined to think his account was either stolen or bought on eBay, but both of those would require some basic internet knowledge. Color me befuddled.
If he’s stupid enough to buy his account, he’s stupid enough for anything.
Really, I can see someone with a level 80 not knowing Vent (it is possible to get to 80 without a guild) and sucking at duels (also possible to get to 80 without fighting another player, I think), but not knowing where the capital cities are is more than enough evidence for a conviction. There is simply no possible way you could get to 80 legitimately and not know that. I’d have kicked him right then and there and told him to come back when he knew something about the game.
I suppose there’s one other option that would explain his lack of basic internet knowledge: a friend or family member bought the account or leveled up the character for him, then showed him how to get into the game but nothing else. He was probably pretty young.
We had minor drama yesterday too. A previous member had left months ago amidst some serious drama, and yesterday one of our officers (who is typically a very mellow, get-along guy) let one of the former member’s alts back into the guild. Note that his main is still in this big raiding guild, which we allow but most people who return are leaving those big raiding guilds and coming back to mostly quiet, occasionally-raiding us.
I don’t like this guy. At all. He’s extremely moody and no good at hiding it; he can go from friendly one day to serious jerk the next. He split up with his girlfriend around the time he left the guild, and she begged my husband (an officer) not to bring him back in. She wanted to get away from dealing with him (eventually she quit playing, but she liked having us to talk to online until then), and her descriptions of his behavior really matched that of someone with bipolar disorder (my father-in-law has this), plus he was somewhat abusive towards her.
My husband found out the guy was back, but we left on some errands. Before we returned, he had been talked to by our guild leader and asked to leave, because of his history of drama and the GL’s fear that this would blow up all over again. Whew, dodged a bullet.
Two comments here. I didn’t know what Vent was until well after I dinged 80 (not really needed until you want to raid) and still have never won a duel. Furthermore, I never set foot in Silvermoon until I had to go there for Children’s week - there’s just no reason you have to go to that particular city.
That said, the guy clearly had no idea what he was doing, and gkicking for annoyance is certainly acceptable. Taking the whole story into account it sounds like he was on an account leveled by a friend or family member.
As an aside, I really have to question the logic of the guild “testing” this guys DPS by dueling… why not run him through a 5-man or something more raid-like than a PvP duel where the fight isn’t likely long enough to be a meaningful gauge of DPS and threat management isn’t even an issue (but things like snares and getting out of them is)?
