World of Warcraft General Discussion

Reminds me of my husband wanting to create a druid (we’re Horde, so he was Tauren) and group with my BElf rogue. He started at level 1 and just ran - Bloodhoof Village in Mulgore, Camp Taurajo to Crossroads in the Barrens, Razor Hill in Durotar, up to Orgrimmar for the zep, hop off outside Undercity, portal to Silvermoon, then run backwards through the (somewhat tightly packed with monsters) newbie zone to meet me at the start. He had gained at least one level just from exploration EXP! He also got a whole lot of weird looks, and the disappointment of discovering (at least at that time) the BElves are racists and don’t give the lvl 1-5 newbie quests to outsiders.

Pfft, whiners. Try being a troll or tauren and riding through UC normally - I always have to dismount when dealing with the elevators.

Or a Draenei Alliance-side. Even on a chicken, I still get hung up at building entrances, so instead of enjoying an auto-dismount I have to click it off.

I didn’t know that. Interesting. That’s probably a nice chunk of change I’ve been passing by. I’m still farming cloth, to get the other tailor skilled up, and I’ve also been paying some attention to my blacksmithing (finally). It’s a good thing I have a miner, or I’d be broke

Yep I found that out when I was going for the Ambassador title on my main and was hitting up all the lowbie quests for the Belfs.

Yes, I believe that you never see them in Northrend outside of Dalaran. Know why? Because anyone in Northrend with enough money to have a TTM also has at least one epic flyer. The people who are using them for transporting themselves and others are going to be mostly doing it in the old world; those who are using them as portable vendors you won’t see at all unless you happen to be right on top of them when they whip the mount out for the five seconds it takes to sell off their trash.

Heh. I live to grind. For the firefly pet, it took me about 1,800 kills. For the azure whelpling, over 3,000. For the Disgusting Oozling, about 2,000. I recently ground out Timbermaw rep, just because (well, just because I wanted The Diplomat title; I already had Sporeggar and Mag’Har rep for the pet & mounts). I’m currently working on getting all four goblin factions to exalted by killing pirates. Lots and lots of pirates. I’m going for The Exalted (40 Exalted Factions)…I’m currently only at 28 exalted factions. Grinding is my (WoW) life for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been spending most of my time in the Old World these days. I have yet to see one (and I’ve seen plenty of other 80s cruising around doing low-level quests, helping out lowbies, traveling to and fro, etc.).

The primary reason most people bought one was because, at first, they were considered vehicles, and thus one did not take damage when jumping off high places, as WoW players are wont to do. Once Blizzard changed that, and they began being treated like normal mounts (i.e., you take falling damage), interest in buying (or even using) them dropped off significantly. They were, and are, nothing more than gimmicky-gold sinks. And now that they’re less gimmicky, most folks don’t bother with them.

Indeed. How much vendor trash would you need to sell to make up a mammoth’s purchase price?

Recently, while in STV, I rode Silka through some panthers and tigers, and when I entered combat, and felt that first hit, I was wondering if I should have dismounted, but kept on going instead of fighting them as i was heading for the Kurzen’s camp…

Also, I was just on the Wow Insider site to read up on tanking 101, and although I think I have the basic concept of it (hold aggro), I am not sure Wolkie is equipped enough. He has the dodge, the parry, the demoralizing shout, the blood rage and the shield block…and I know he needs to be in DEFENSIVE STANCE only, right - not battle stance?

Am I understanding the basics as I should? I go in first draw (pull) the enemy to me, but don’t engage them at all, just stand there and let them pound on me while I yell and dodge and stuff?

See, when they get into all the aggro “numbers” and shit on what’s supposed to be a very elemental explanation, they lose me.

I just need somebody to say, “Just do this and nothing else.”

Thanks

Nope. You hit back. (If all you do is dodge and yell, you’ll lose aggro quickly, as the monsters focus on the people who are actually hitting them). I don’t remember what abilities you have at your level, but the abilities you should be using include:

1 - Thunderclap - use this early and often, as it will damage all the monsters around you - otherwise, the guys not straight in front of you might decide to go kill the healer. Also, the thunderclap effect will help reduce the damage you’re taking by slowing down the guys hitting you.

2 - Shield block - use this every time it is available, to help prevent as much damage as possible.

3 - Revenge - use this every time it’s lit up. It deals nice damage and also causes bonus aggro. And with multiple guys pounding on you most of the time it should be lit up a fair amount.

4 - Sunder Armor - This doesn’t do any damage, but does make the guys you’re sundering pissed at you. Plus it increases the damage everyone else is doing.

5 - Blood rage or whatever the rage-generating ability is. You need lotsa rage to keep the abilities working.

Basically, how a typical “pull” should go is:

1 - shoot or throw a ranged weapon at the target. If you’re in defensive stance you can’t use charge anyway (there’s a high level ability that will let you use charge in defensive stance, and in combat, but you’re not that high-level yet).

2 - pop blood rage and shield block while you’re waiting for the monster to reach you.

3 - hit thunderclap once the beasty is in range. Your auto-attack should already be going.

4 - do the yell that reduces the opponents’ power.

5 - if you can hit revenge, do it. Otherwise, hit sunder armor. continue alternating sunder, revenge, and thunderclap until the guy in front of you is dead. Then pick a new target and start beating on him. Continue until all the guys from the pull are dead.

Once you’ve finished a pull, you should look at your healer’s mana bar (the blue bar) - if it’s close to empty, wait a bit for him to drink and regenerate his mana. Otherwise, it’s time to go looking for new victims.

(Ideally, in the process, you should watch for if your healer’s portrait starts flashing red. If it is, you need to find what monster is attacking him and use your Taunt ability to pull the monster off.)

You also need to fight them, Quasi, because it helps to keep their aggro on you (and helps cut their health down, too). But otherwise, yeah, you’ve got the basic gist of it, although it’s not always going to be you who pulls. Depending on the encounter, you might need to allow crowd control folks to do their thing first, or allow a hunter to pull then Feign Death to allow you to grab the mob’s aggro.

Cleave. Overpower. Demoralising shout can grab an initial, if weak and breakable, aggro.

Basically, just think of it like “who’s threatening the enemy the most?” If all you do is stand there and let yourself be attacked, you’re not much threat to the enemy. If someone’s healing you, they’re more of a threat than you are, because they’re preventing the enemy from killing you. But if you attack the enemy back and hurt it, you’re way more of a threat than whoever’s healing you. You’re also more of a threat if you do more damage than other people, or if you “piss off” the enemy somehow beyond just hurting it. There’s a lot of Warrior abilities that “piss off” the enemy, and those are what Tom Scud is talking about. But understanding the concept might help you understand why it is you need to do this stuff.

You are a rotten induvidual to do this to someone in a video game.

I’m sorry, You would have to be a rotten individual. Did not want to accuse him of doing this.

Our guild bank was hacked by someone last weekend that the guild leader knew from outside the game. So it has been a touchy subject.

no clue, i just got all of them returned after not selling. I try to sell them twice, then i vendor them. My vendor mule is trehugger … please buy my fishies =) lol

Oh shit. All Wolkie has is that one two-handed sword. Guess I’d better get him a bow/arrows or a spear, huh? I Didn’t know he could carry both types of weapons?

That’s a lot of stuff to have to remember to do, if I have to hit back too, and in “the heat of battle”, I think that’s what is causing me to screw up so bad. Maybe I HAD better stay DPS only…

Also, I now have my own AH “mule”. HIS name is Wollkie and he sits right outside the AH. He’s just a lvl 1 at present, but I’m gonna level him up a little too… Thanks to him I am keeping 26 empty slots in my bags.

Also added “Auction Lite” to my adds.

Thanks for the suggestion, SFG!

One more prob: Lately when I’m engaging an enemy (such as the Kurzens), all of a sudden there’s long list of drop-down (enemy stats, I think?) stuff that appears on the right hand side of my screen, and it’s a tad aggravating. How do I switch it off, y’all?

Thanks

The best (some would say “only acceptable”) gear for tanking is onehanded weapon and shield. Don’t bother with a bow…if you want a missile weapon, learn Thrown and buy a throwing knife. With bows you need to keep buying arrows, but a throwing knife only has to be repaired when you do your usual equipment repairs.
