Well, at level 50 you’d need almost all your talents in prot. You start getting all the tools you need to AOE grind groups of mobs as protection from lvls 40-50.
Sorrow Hill in WPL is one of the first areas where the technique really shines (tightly packed melee-only mobs, mobs there don’t flee when near death, and pallies are great vs undead). It’s been a few patches but I’d bless santuary, seal of light or wisdom, put on retribution aura, mount up and aggro as many undead as I could. Then dismount hit concecration, holy shield and judge till the pack is dead. Loot then repeat.
It’s the most fun I’ve had solo in Azeroth, though I’m sure it’d get old eventually but the xp/hour was pretty good so I leveled to outland quick.
It SOUNDS like your tooltips are set to show all the information on the mob. Do you have any tooltip mods working? If not, you should be able to go into Interface and see if you can change options for tooltips.
Whoa–good luck! Are you going for “the Insane” when that’s available, too?
They’re still really useful for carting around alts and selling vendor trash when farming. If I’d stop spending so much money on vanity pets and mounts, I’d have one in not too much time. Another friend of mine is less than 3k gold away from his–this is going to be especially useful since we’re currently in the middle of helping each other gear up our new twinks. (Giving the twink a ride to the instance is much faster than having it run there; being able to hit up a vendor just by zoning out of an instance is faster than running to the nearest vendor to ditch trash; etc.)
It’s not about making up the purchase price–it’s a gold sink. It’s something you buy when you don’t have anything else to spend money on. I’ve dumped who the hell knows how many thousands of gold (probably at least 10-20k) into non-combat pets and mounts–none of those are ever going to make me any money at all. The TTM at least has some real, concrete benefits.
Nope, you can just keep riding. That’s one of the biggest benefits to a mount–you don’t have to stop to fight everything that’s in your way, like you would have to do on foot. You can just keep riding to get to the things you REALLY want to kill (like quest monsters).
1.) You should go first in case you run into something unexpected, but you shouldn’t pull by running in (called a “body pull” or a “facepull”). You should use your ranged weapon (gun, bow, crossbow, or thown weapon).
2.) You should be attacking the enemies to cause more threat. Any time you’re fighting more than one, you should hit Thunder Clap every time it’s available. Sunder Armor is great for single targets. Don’t be afraid to tell the group to kill things in a certain order–it’s a lot harder to hold on to all of them when people are damaging different ones, and it’s a lot easier to keep ahead of everyone else on threat when you know that they’re not hitting anything you are not also hitting. (The one problem is healing–if there is more than one mob hitting you, the person healing you is going to get aggro on all of them, not just the one you’re hitting. This is why things like Thunder Clap are important, even if your DPS is focusing on one target at a time.)
 If I may direct your attention:
Warriors can use every kind of weapon in the game except for Wands (and class-specific Relics such as Librams and Idols). Some of them we start out knowing, and some of them have to be trained. Go to each old-world capital city, right-click on a guard, and have them mark your map with the Weapon Master. This person will sell you the ability to use the weapons you don’t yet know how to use. Not every Weapon Master can teach you ever skill, which is why you have to travel to all three old-world capitals (Stormwind, Ironforge, and Darnassus).
To tank as a Warrior, you should have a one-handed weapon (sword, axe, or mace) and a shield. Make sure that your shield is one intended for Warriors and not for Holy Paladins or Elemental/Restoration Shamans (if it has Intellect, Mana regeneration, Spellpower, etc., it’s not a good shield for a Warrior).
Regardless of what you have equipped for your melee weapons (two 1H weapons, one 2H weapon, or a 1H weapon and a shield), you can also always have a ranged item equipped, which would be a bow, crossbow, gun, or thrown weapon. If you have a bow/crossbow, you must also equip arrows; if you have a gun, you must also equip bullets. One arrow or bullet is used up every time you shoot the weapon, but since you can have up to 1,000 in a single stack, you probably won’t have to buy them very often. Thrown weapons do not require any ammo. (You will not be doing a lot of attacking with your ranged weapon–usually only one shot, and then the monster will be close enough to hit with your melee attacks.)
Tanking can be kind of crazy to get used to–don’t get into it unless it’s really something you’re interested in. If you’re excited to learn to tank, by all means, try it out! But don’t feel obligated to do it for anyone but yourself–it’s not worth the headache, otherwise.
Check under your Interface options… I think under Combat there’s a section called something like Floating Combat Text. That’s probably what you’re seeing. (Note: this is if the text is scrolling by. If it’s a static box that pops up in one corner of your screen, that’s something different.)
If the problem keeps happening, take a screenshot of it if you can so we can get a better idea of what we’re looking at.
For Warriors, this is the case. There are some people who play around with speccing heavily into Arms and using a 2H weapon, but that’s Seriously Fucking Advanced Tanking Shit and not for the beginner. (Death Knights and Druids, on the other hand, literally cannot tank with a shield–they can’t equip them at all.)
That’s definitely a mod and sounds like mobInfo (which I use briefly and hated for the same reason) or something that serves a similar purpose. The better way to deal with undesired UI behavior is to log out, disable everything, log back in, and see if it still happens. If that doesn’t fix it, it’s a setting in your WTF folder and you may need to either delete it or use a script to clean it. Fortunately, that’s a rarity. One time I had an add-on bug badly enough that even an uninstall didn’t fix the problem and I had to clean up my WTF folder do that. Fortunately, someone had written a script for it (since it happened to everyone who was using it) so I didn’t have to delete the folder and only had to install the updated version of that mod and set it up again rather than redoing all my settings for all my add-ons.
If disabling everything fixes it, then re-enable things one at a time (or in small groups if you have tons of add-ons) so you can pinpoint the issue. Even though something may seem unrelated, because so many add-ons use shared libraries and interact in ways you might not think, it’s possible that any add-on could be causing the problem. For instance, I had a problem with DoTimer giving me errors because I had another add-on that was using the same library for placement and they were conflicting over that. I only figured it out because I wanted both add-ons so I took the time to manually edit DoTimer (since it was the one throwing errors, not the conflicting addon) to work without throwing errors.
Edit: FWIW, I’m an add-on junkie. I don’t think I have any component of my UI left from the default.
I really doubt that an addon is causing Quasi’s problem–it’s my impression that he doesn’t use a lot of them, and the ones he does use, he knows what they do.
It is available. I’ve seen somebody on my server with it already.
TTMs are extremely useful for certain raids, too–notably Eye of Eternity and Obsidian Sanctum, where it’s kind of a pain to get to a vendor. Just have your party member whip out the old mammoth, everybody repairs, and you’re good to go. Not as useful for Naxx (where you come back right near a repair guy) or Ulduar (where there’s one right inside the front door) but for the other two they were a godsend.
I thought about it, but I think, ultimately, no. For one thing, I’ve already put in a lot of time and effort into building up rep with the goblin factions, and I don’t really feel like doing it all over again (seeing as how they would all get blown away by getting the Bloodsail rep). And second, the grind for Shandralar rep is just way too off-putting. I don’t have the cash to spend on buying Pristine Black Diamonds from the AH (they’re currently selling for 100g+ each on my server). And the whole “unique” aspect to the librams makes turning them in a major pain, as well. All things considered…I’ll pass on that one. For now.
The three factions that are going to be the biggest grind for me are Warsong Outriders (I’m still frickin’ neutral with them, so it’s going to be a very long grind… hopefully the upcoming changes to WSG will help speed that up a bit, at least), The Defilers (barely into Friendly with them, so lots of AB for me), and Ravenholdt (not that bad, really, since I do have a rogue alt who can do all the pickpocketing necessary; it’ll just take a long time to fetch up the 1400 or so lockboxes I’ll need).
The other reps I need I’m already at either honored or revered, and are easy enough to solo.
On my way to 40 exalted factions, I’ll also get the Conquerer title (I’m already exalted with Alterac Valley forces), as well as some miscellaneous achievements for specific factions (e.g., Zandalar).
The reps I have decided to focus on in order to get to the magic number 40 are:
4x Goblin Factions: Should hit exalted with just a few more days of pirate-hunting, maybe with a few key runs thrown in.
Thrallmar, Keepers of Time, and Sha’tar: Only at honored with Thrallmar and KoT, but revered with Sha’tar. I can solo these for the most part for rep.
Netherwing: I never bothered with it during TBC, largely because I had no need for the mount (I play a druid main). Should go fairly quickly since there isn’t a lot of competition these days for eggs.
Zandalar: Never ran much ZG back in the day, so was barely into honored. However, I can solo the trash, and after one run, I’m almost revered (including bijou / coin turn-ins). Only problem with this one is getting someone to join me for the raid.
Ravenholdt: Easy to get to revered by killing Syndicate guys in Hillsbrad Foothills. Then my rogue takes over.
Warsong Outriders and Defilers: lots of PVP. I’ll save these for last (meaning I’ll get both The Exalted and The Conqueror simultaneously )
SFG, the comments on Wowhead were mostly oriented toward warrior tanks who could reflect the spells or interrupt them back, so since your main is a warrior it sounds like you would have been interrupting them anyway with no problem. (I’m pretty sure I’m getting the exact skill names wrong, as I’m not familiar with warrior tactics so forgive me)
Next time I’m ingame with the lock/druid, I’ll throw it out there and see if they’re interested in throwing themselves at OK again now that I know what we were dying to. And I’ll have to try making my pet stick to the spell flingers like glue – I don’t exactly recall atm whether it’s two flingers to a group or one and 2-3 melee. (Intimidation ftw)
Y’all, I abandoned that one, after seeing how many friggin’ pages there were and what they would cost to buy at AH. So I am auctioning mine off as well.
I returned a pot to the Booty Bay cook, and ran into something I could open called “The Guild Vault”. Is this MY guild vault, and can I draw from it what I might need? (it looks like mostly junk drops and glyphs).
Also, think I hit a wrong “repair” button and drew some money out of my guild repair bank. I would like to put this money back, since I didn’t need to do that.
Does that go to the vault, or do I just send it to my guild leader?
Also, unless something changes BIG-TIME and I learn how to REALLY tank, I think I’m gonna stay away from it and just do DPS.
Y’all know me and they don’t so, I don’t feel like having to explain that at age 59, I’m “mentally challenged” and am now eating foods which end in “A-Roni”, so I’m just strictly gonna say no to tanking.
Besides, some of the nicer members of my guild already know my problems.
But hey, I’m at 34 with ol’ Wolkie and Silka and I’m halfway through the Kurzen Stronghold cave quest.
Last question: Would a throwing knife help us soloing, or should I just stick to my two-handed Claymore sword for now?
Quasi, you can have a throwing knife equipped at the same time as your sword. It can be handy to pull out a monster that’s too tightly packed in with his friends, so you can hopefully lure him out to you and beat him up on his own, without all his buddies getting in the way =)
And what I see over Wolkie’s head is “6 minutes until release”, and the words ‘Release Spirit’. I don’t see ANYTHING that just says “Release”, and I am NOT in an instance, so what happens if I just continue to lie there?
ETA: It ook me to the Spirit Healer anyway… and so now I have the option of the ten minute rez or find my own body, but how that have been DIFFERENT in an instance? I know. somebody in my group might have rezzed me, but what if they were still there and there was no healer?
@Quasimodem: I highly recommend you read the tanking article over on Wowwiki.
You don’t need to know all the formulas and such right now, but you should know the basics. Essentially, you want all of the mobs attacking you so they don’t go after the DPS and healers. To do that, you need to:
Get them to attack you.
Keep getting them to attack you.
Survive.
If you did the pulling (which means starting combat and trying to move a mob away from other mobs so the pulled mob does not aggro the other mobs), then the mobs would most likely go after you first as long as the other players don’t attack them or heal. Just doing that and surviving would satisfy criteria 1 and 3, but in order to keep them attacking you you would have to cause threat, which means attacking them and using your abilities. I think that warriors rely the least on direct damage to cause threat among the tanking classes. Instead, their tanking abilities cause extra threat other than the threat that would normally be generated by damage.
Here’s a tip: many new-ish tanks don’t seem to do this, but it’s important that you don’t just focus on one mob the whole time (unless there’s only one mob). You need to keep an eye on the other mobs and occasionally switch targets to build threat on every mob. When a healer heals, he causes threat to every mob that’s fighting, so just focusing on the mob that’s being DPS’ed will eventually cause another mob to attack the healer.
If I’m reading everything correctly, I have to be in a Raid to do this quest? I picked it up on my lvl 80 human pally while working on Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms, and while I was doing the previous quest (grabbing the SI:7 badges off the corpses), I went ahead and whacked Nathanos while I was at it, no problem at all. But then I went back to SW where the king sent me back to kill the guy (this quest). I sat there for more than 20 minutes, and the guy just would not spawn. When I arrived the corpses of his dogs were on the ground, so I assumed somebody had just done the quest right before I arrived. Those corpses disappeared, but still no respawn…
