World of Warcraft General Discussion

I haven’t participated in this discussion thread at all, but I’ve been aware of it for a while, and I’ve been playing WoW for a while (there was a 3 yr break in there at one point).

A couple weeks ago I finally got my lock up to lvl 80. When I was playing him before, my spec’ing was all over the place - earn a talent point, put it where it seemed to make sense at the time. No real focus on a certain tree. I reached an endless grind (at the time, xp wise) at lvl 54, and stopped playing.

I picked the game up again a few months ago, and obviously all my talents were reset. I respec’d, mostly into the destro tree, but I found I was out of mana quickly. I enlisted the help of a new guildmate, and he helped me respec to demonology, where I discovered the awesomeness of the felguard. That made levelling to 80 pretty easy.

As I was in the high lvl 70’s, PUG’ing instances, I found I was consistently tops in DPS. Once I hit heroics, I fell to the bottom, because I was entering a new realm of gear, and everyone else in the party usually had better gear. I eventually got to having a couple lvl 245 items, but mostly everything was around lvl 200. I tend to fall behind the group because I’m always picking up loot and the tank is running ahead. Either way, I got back to the middle-ground of DPS, occasionally top.

I found a couple trends:

  1. The sweet spot for my DPS Is 3 or more mobs, in a battle that lasts at least 30 seconds, due to seed of corruption spam.
  2. My DPS fell noticably on bosses, where single target burst is more important.
  3. My DPS on a target dummy was around 3k, using a spellstone.

Due to #2 above, I decided to respec as destro, but was kinda disappointed to find that my DPS was still around 3k - even with chaos bolt, conflagurate and incinerate in the rotation. Not only that, but now I have less survivability then I did with demonology (where I could pop into a demon if I was drawing too much aggro). My single target burst in a real instance seems to be improved, but if I die 2x as much and have to wait for a heal - whats the point?
Also, I found that farming and dealing with multiple mobs is harder - with the felguard, I could handle 6+ mobs at once, going from one to the next, and within a minute have a pile of bodies to pick through.

I can’t help but to think that demonology is a better spec - but it seems like everyone says destro has better DPS. I’ve done some research into builds and rotations, but of course they all start with a forum post providing a basic build and rotation, and every response is ‘take talents from X and put them into Y because of Z reason’.

So I guess my question is - what am I missing? Am I totally off base with my thoughts (and experience) that demonology is just as high DPS with the bonus of better crowd control and survivability? Or am I totally missing out on something awesome with destruction?

These stories are related…

Also, note to other DK tanks - you do not have a shield. You cannot heal yourself (unless you’re blood spec). You do not have a bears HP pool (I’ve seen 100k HP more than a few times now ). You can still do massive pulls, pop some cooldowns, and survive just fine, but if you even have a hint of a suspicious that your healer is not prepared for what you’re planning, please don’t pull the entire dungeon and then QQ when you die. Thanks.

The SDMB guild on Cairne is Horde-side and called Burning Dog Legion. We usually have people levelling alts in addition to playing their 80’s so you won’t be the only low-level toon. Of course if you have toons left over from BC you could always transfer them and not have to start from the beginning. In either case, levelling 1-70 has been sped up so it doesn’t take a long time to get to the new WotLK content.

Hey all. I got volunteered as the cat herder for a weekend that included TOTC10, Onyxia10, and OS10. A couple of the other officers who actually have Vent handled the strats and healy assignments (which I still don’t know well) while I did the recruiting and cat herding. That division seemed to work out well, but still. Stress city. Afterward I asked for perf feedback and people have told me that I done good – we never have enough guildies on so we always fill with friends of the guild and a few pugs – but I’m never letting my GM go out of town again.

I’ve also dusted off my holy priest since a friend has a toon in the same level band and I was rusty enough I didn’t want to go in solo. Our Mana-Tombs run went well although the bear tank kept pulling even after I called for mana, then dropped group without a word with dps eating floor after the mage bitched him out about it. :dubious: Thankfully, the unholy DK stepped up and tanked us through the rest of the run very nicely. Either way I think I’m definitely going to look forward to getting her into NR.

So my spriest dinged 80 last night, and as I have the day off and my wife has a half day, I spent the morning running as a way-undergeared dps through a handful of random heroics. Between the badges for those runs and the ones I’d saved up from doing random northrend dungeons, he’s now got 2 pieces of T9 (the cheap ones, gloves and shoulders) and picked up 3 or 4 other random bits of level 200 gear. Now comes the gems-and-enchants treadmill…

Quick update:

My guild is now 8/12 ICC 25-man Heroic! The 10% buff went out this week, so it obviously helped, as we picked up Deathbringer Saurfang, Valithria Dreamwalker, Festergut, Blood Prince Council and Blood Queen Lana’thel so far this week. I honestly believe we could have defeated several of these encounters without the extra 5%, but RL has hit quite a few members, and we were running a fairly gimped raid (though clearly not gimped enough to keep us from progressing). The added mechanics add some flavor, but really all the fights just raise the bar in what they expect from every raid member. I’m very pleased to see how well the guild is running right now.

We now have Lady Deathwhisper, Sindragosa, Professor Putricide and the Lich King left as far as Heroics go. Our melee keep getting blown up by ghosts on Deathwhisper. Not sure what is going on there outside of them tunnel-visioning and just not paying attention (though I’ve seen quite a few ranged get destroyed as well). Sindragosa will be interesting, though it will essentially be the same fight, just whoever gets Unchained Magic will just be useless for the entire duration of the debuff (no casting at all = no explosions). Putricide will be fun, though I’ll have the added responsibility of making sure people handle Unbound Plague correctly. All of this, and we will see the LK on Heroic next reset (unless we decide to achievement farm to get our drakes prior). Hope everyone else is enjoying their raiding/playing as much as I have this past week!

Been trying to make online payment, but forgot how, apparently. Can someone point me there? I’ve been to history, manage accounts and the Store, and I’ll be damned if I can find it.

And, as an aside the only talent point I found availabe for my Arms Spec was heroic strike. I do have more in PROT but I’ve been staying in Arms since I don’t actually protect anyone (don’t tank, I mean).

Also, what a DOWNER to see that 1% after levelling!

Thanks

Q

Never mind, subs renew automatically. (I finally landed on the correct FAQ page).

Something weird though: According to WoW my sub expires ont he 20th of this month. But PENDING is a 1 day credit for 4.10.10 and a 15 day credit scheduled for 4.14. So does that mean the sub doesn’t actually expire until sometime the end of the month, and what do y’all think prompted the credits?

Thanks

Q

Congatulations! Nice work.

We’re 6/12 as of last night: Marrowgar, Gunship, Saurfang, Rotface, Festergut, and Blood Princes down. Still have one more raid day this week, so I’m hoping we’ll get Blood Queen and Dreamwalker down. Then it’s the hard stuff. We had the same problems you did on Deathwhisper–tried her three times and didn’t see appreciable improvement, so we moved on. We came close to getting Sindragosa down in heroic 10 man last week (before the buff) so I’m hoping that experience will carry forward to 25-man and the buff will push us over the top.

I don’t think we’re going to try heroic Lich King for awhile–we only just downed him for the first time last week, and even then we only had like 4 people up. So we’ve still got some work to do.

It should be under manage accounts or payment history, Q. Not sure if you have a subscription (sounds like you don’t).

Is this Rumpole? Catch me online tonight if you need me to do any enchants for you. I can also have some nice tailoring recipes that might be upgrades for you (like the Deathchill Cloak and the Royal Moonshroud Bracers), if you can collect the mats.

Thanks man.

Yeah, the second kill is always the hardest. Due to RL issues that I mentioned above, we had to 24-man him last reset, which happened to be a really clean kill. But, the week before we really struggled to get him down. It’s all about practice. Our Dreamwalker kill (heal?) was really fugly. The outside was pretty much getting destroyed as we healed the last 2%. We had issues with the healers not meeting up and grabbing orbs towards the end, and since the orbs don’t respawn in there it lowered our efficiency overall. Should be much better the next week. Blood Queen was a decent kill, but we came right up on the enrage timer, again due to our top DPS being out for the night due to RL. We have one raid day left as well, but only have Sindragosa and LK left in the instance. So, we’ll probably give some tries to Sindragosa HM, and then if we aren’t making significant progress, just clear the instance. Good luck in your raids this week; let me know how it goes.

Daedelus, I do have a sub. Renews automatically!

Thanks

Q

And when you group with someone, you get shitty XP! :frowning:

Can y’all tell I’m my “bitchy mode” today? Been playing for 30 minutes and still haven’t budged of the 1%!

Quasi

Okay, let’s see if I have this right: I can buy the mount from him, but can’t fly it till I get artisan training, and that costs 5k gold, right?

I ask because when I hit 70, I got a message from Maigra and the part at the bottom was kinda confusing to me, so I went to Thotbott, put in his name, and those folks were “all over the the place” with their answers! So I am asking here.

Jesus! 5K! Those monsters better come up with some g’s, then!

Thanks,

Q

That’s right Quasi – the Artisan training is five big ones before you can ride any of the “swift” mounts.

However, you can’t fly in Northrend anyway until you’re 77 (or is it 76?), so I wouldn’t worry about not having the cash right now. You have several levels to save up!

First it wouldn’t let me log in (“This account has no characters”), and then it DID but instead of Wolkie it showed me some hairy-looking dude from HERE. I think his post is upthread somewhere, but the hair looking guy was going by MY name and level ??? They call him a “Tusskan Warrior”.

I looked at that hairy guy a couple of days ago. Y’all think that’s what hung it up??

Would somebody else take a look, so I’ll know I haven’t gone crazier?

Thanks

Q

Cool! Okay thanks, Skammie!

When I was starting out on jousting, I was kind of annoyed that you can’t even practice if you don’t have the quest. If you try, the NPC will just say, “Are you sure you’re ready?” or words to that effect. The only non-quest practice you can do is against the target dummies (big help there) or against other players, and we all know players don’t fight the same way NPCs do, so that probably wouldn’t help much with learning to fight the NPCs.

Once you hand in your 25 seals, you get sent to prove yourself against a Champion. After you beat him you go back to the Grand Champion who sent you, and he declares you a Champion of that capital (“Champion of Orgrimmar” in your current case). You’ll then have access to that capitol’s quartermaster, and you can move on to the next capitol. And do the same set of dailies again until you’ve earned 25 more Valiant’s Seals.

To help ease the pain, I’ll share my frog-kissing macro:

/use Warts-B-Gone Lip Balm
/kiss

Create the macro and drag the button to an action bar. Then just target a frog and click the button. I’m really glad I made this macro. When doing my Valiant quests on Keliraeda, out of 25 “A Worthy Weapon” dailies, the one where you bring flowers to the troll at the lake came up exactly 3 times, the one with the dryad in the block of ice came up maybe 8 times, and all the rest were the frog-kissing quest.

If you add “/tar Lake Frog” (or whatever they are called) to the macro, you don’t even have to click on a frog to target. Just walk around spamming the button.
