World of Warcraft General Discussion

It is, true. And it will help you generate more threat, which is a good thing.

I might actually move a few points around in my build–I forgot that Icy Touch got a bit boost in threat generation in the last patch, so Improved Icy Touch would be a nice complement to that. Would probably be worth pulling points out of Necrosis to put there.

This DK is my alt, so I don’t scrutinize his build as closely as I do my main’s–if it’s working, I don’t fix it. But it might be time to make a few tweaks.

Here’s a build I just looked at from WoWPopular (a site that lists the most popular specs and builds by class). They do take Scent of Blood (and Subversion), but take Improved Icy instead of Necrosis:

Makes sense, since auto-attacks don’t do a whole lot of your damage or aggro. Still, it’s such a nice ability for what it is that it’s hard to pass up!

Once Scent of Blood is triggered by something taking a swipe at you, any and every whack with your weapon will give you the bonus runic power, be it auto-attacks & rune strikes or command attacks like Plague Strike & Obliterate.

Necrosis, however, is no longer a solid tanking talent because along the lines they changed it to not trigger off Rune Strikes. Epidemic has been undervalued as well, because as of the last patch, Icy Touch now causes such a ridiculous amount of threat that you wind up spamming it with every frost or death rune anyway, making the disease timer moot (you’re always recasting icy) as well as disease bonuses on the heavy strikes (which you’re not using).

Improved Rune Tap is, on the other hand, highly valuable. It’s really a pretty massive chunk of healing on demand, and with the quality of the people the dungeon finder sticks you with, the less reliant you can be on the rest of the group, the better. Heck, it’s even a good AOE aggro tool if you get the full heal from it.

I signed on for the first time in a month last night, and I went to clear out a bunch of rep items from ZG. Whaddaya know: after turning most of them in, I finally hit Exalted with Zandalar! Which, of course, puts me one recipe closer to having every Alch recipe in the game.

Mogle, thanks for the Arms update! Moot point for me now, since my offspec is Fury these days, but still good to know (and good for me to not give outdated advice :D).

:smack: Yes, or that. I keep forgetting about Paladins.

A Hunter can tame any tame-able Beast that is their own level or lower. They are the only class that can do this.

If you Shift+Click on the person’s name in chat, it will put a line in your chat log that tells you their class, level, guild, and current location. You can get the same information by typing /who character (so to find out about you, I’d type /who Wolkenlaufre). Their faction will always be the same as yours (Alliance if you’re on an Alliance character). If you want to know what their race is, what gear they have equipped, what talents they have, etc., you’d want to go look them up in the WoW Armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/

And, unfortunately, vote-to-kick doesn’t work once the dungeon is completed. So, since this tank and I are on different servers, we’ll only be able to work together again if the RDF happens to put us together again.

It’s usually not intentional. I know personally, I’ve queued up on my Mage, waited for a long time, and then in the five seconds I get up to use the bathroom or get myself a drink, my group pops up, and I miss the alert. What I don’t get is when a tank declines an invitation, since there’s no way they’ve been waiting for more than a minute (or a few seconds, at some levels).

The complex fights you see us discussing here are all for raids–endgame content, designed for groups of 10 or 25 players, all at maximum level (and, for a lot of the fights that have been talked about lately, very high-end gear). Some dungeon fights can involve strategy, especially when they’re done at-level, but a lot of them tend to be tank ‘n’ spank (or become such when the group sufficiently outgears the content). If you’re curious about a particular fight’s mechanics, you can always look it up on Wowhead or WoWWiki.

Someone in either Vengeance Landing or New Agamand should have sent you up to Winterhoof Village, a taunka town. Several good quests up there. There’s also the tuskarr fellow hanging around at the top of the big ski-lift thing overlooking the southern coast. He’ll send you on a quest or two, and then send you down the lift to talk to the other tuskarr in their village on an island just off the coast.

There’s also the Apothecary Camp, which is in the west part of HF. The quests in HF are really spread out for Horde.

Here’s a new DK plan. Last one, I swear!

I need to save two points for Morbidity, but I really want to keep Rune Tap + Improved. Where should I shave a couple points? It’s mildly irritating that I won’t be using the other half of Morbidity (little need for Death Coils), but oh well. I could get by with only 2 points in Morbidity.

Is Hysteria really worth it? It’s nice - but it’s also a 3 minute cooldown. Maybe it’s really for raiding, where a DK tank could use it grab aggro really fast? It does seem more for DPS, though. Sure, I could toss it on them, but there’s a lot going on when tanking already, so…

Hey Bandit. Check out my spec. I think it’s the generally accepted spec for Blood DPS. (If you’re tanking then I got nothin’ for ya.)

[EDIT: Doh! It appears that you DO want to blood-tank. I guess the following advice is good for other DKs though.]

Rune tap is pretty useless to DPS. If your healer isn’t keeping you alive then you’re going to get pounded harder than a Rune Tap can help with. You shouldn’t have aggro unless your tank dies, so you shouldn’t be taking huge damage unless you’re headed for a wipe. You want to take Sudden Doom and Morbidity because that’s just a lot of free DPS. Heart Strike it the button you’re going to push most often, and if it hits two mobs and throws a free Death Coil then you’ve gained a lot of damage for that one blood rune. Death Coil is also your runic power dump, so you should be using it often. You also need to get Blood Caked Blade and Necrosis. That’s just pure DPS increase. So is Dancing Rune Weapon.

The rule of thumb for DPS specs is to disregard any talent that doesn’t increase your DPS. Hysteria and Sudden Doom increase DPS, and your points spent in the Frost tree don’t. I usually pop Hysteria on myself near the end of a big fight when I’m not going to die, but I’d really like 20% more damage.

In a boss fight you only really have to use icy touch and plague strike once, so there’s not a lot of point in increasing the damage of the icy touch. You should get the Glyph of Disease and use that to refresh your diseases when they get low. (I also use it in groups of mobs to drop Obliterates on mobs, then switch mobs and re-pestilence to refresh the disease on my obliterated targets.) Think of those two talents as a way to deal some damage and make the rest of your strikes hit harder. They’re not really for dealing DPS all on their own.

I like the Blood Worms, but they’re probably not a big DPS increase. I have a feeling that they help me to keep my health topped off when I’m taking periodic damage, too. That could just be in my head, though.

Here’s my ability rotation, if you’re interested:

Heart Strike, Heart Strike, Death Strike, Coil, Coil, HS, HS, repeat. If you’re on a big mob or a boss you should skip the Coils and use your Dancing Rune Weapon when you have full power.

Point taken, and, as always, suggestions gratefully accepted.

So here’s what I’d like to do: go into the guild message and write the word “Social” in there.

Is the word “mature” understood in a message such as this?

Thanks

Q

Well, I guess I musta been hacked for some gold I had. I know I’m forgetful, and I like to pimp da Wolk’, but Wednesday night I had 785 golds and tonight I had 185.

Does the use of the authenticator REALLY prevent this, or did I do some major damage when I bought g’s from a farmer last year?

I have had some g’s thrown my way as gifts from in-game gurus and a couple of my guildies, but I’m still thinking that someone’s “locked on” to my account now and what makes me say that is that I keep getting PST’s from gold sellers.

As I said: Yes, I keep going to AH to see how we can improve our armor, weaponry and for SURE our protective consumeables, but I don’t remember spending THAT much.

Thanks

Q

I get whispers to buy gold too and i’ve never bought any. It is odd that you would be hacked and they didn’t clean you out and your guild completely.

up to lvl 56 now. Will my life change when I go through the DP or is it really just more of the same? Better kit on offer? better exp?

I’ve been enjoying the Borean Tundra questlines. With my priest I also found Borean Tundra to be more fun alliance side, but I’ve also heard people say they prefer Howling Fjord. I just like how the Horde quests in Tundra are more cohesive, and its fun seeing Garrosh is charge of the Horde forces.

I ran into Garrosh a few weeks ago in Nagrand being a whiny layabout and all of a sudden, you get to Northrend and he’s rocking out the war effort.

No, you haven’t been hacked, and they haven’t ‘locked on’ to your account, everyone gets gold spam.
If you had been hacked they wouldn’t have stopped at 600g, that’s nothing, no if you had been hacked Wolkie would’ve been naked, his bank, wallet and guild bank would have been empty.

Quasi, I don’t remember there being that much gold in the guild vault ever. 785g would be a huge amount for a guild that just started out a couple weeks ago, especially when the majority of the membership is below lvl 30. Unless you’ve been dumping every last gold that you earned in the vault and never spending any of it, that’s way over the amount the last time I was in there. I’m guessing you’re remembering the amount wrong.

I think he was talking personal gold rather than guild gold. Anyway a hacker would have taken all equipment and not have left 165 gold behind.

:smack:

He’s been talking about the guild so much and his own adventuring so little lately that I didn’t even think about that!

Quasi, I don’t think you’ve been hacked - like others said, they would have cleaned you out. I also got a whisper from a gold seller last night (first one in a long time). But to answer your other question, an authenticator will prevent people from accessing your account, so if you’re concerned you could get one.

The Burning Dog Legion tackled Shadow Labs last night. It was very challenging, because while the mobs were level 70-72, I’m only 67 – five levels lower than the bosses. A couple of times I struggled to hold on to aggro because so many of my attacks were missing, but we got through the trash and first two bosses without too much trouble.

Then our paladin had to drop, and we picked up an elemental shammy who came in handy. The third boss, Grandmaster Vorpil, gave us nightmares. He’s the one who opens five portals where voidwalkers spawn and slowly walk toward him, and heal him (+aoe damage) if the reach him. Occasionally the boss also pulls everone in to his location and does a rain of fire. I think we wiped three times (maybe four) before finally taking him down. That felt like a major accomplishment!

Then, with some careful pulls (and one wipe caused by fear) we made all the way to the end, to Murmur. Again, this took several tries and some good healing work, but on (I think) our fourth attempt we were finally able to get him down (I had about 1% health remaining).

Whew! That’s probably the biggest sense of accomplishment I’ve had in a 5-man in a long time. I’m glad the dps that we pugged with stuck with us to the end.

I feel like I should try to hit 68 before we move on to the next dungeon in the progression (since I couldn’t even pick up the quests for SLabs at 67), so next week we may do a random BC instance. I might also go ahead and pick up the chest or shoulder heirloom so I can catch up to everyone (or at least catch up to Mordrin our healer).

I take this back. There are still 7(!) regular 5-man instances to do in BC, I think we should just keep pushing on. I’d rather try a difficult instance and not finish it the first time (like we did with Sethekk Halls) then go back and do one we’ve already conquered. Accordingly, we’ll go ahead and continue, probably in this order: [ul]
[li]Coilfang: Steamvault[/li][li]Hellfire Citadel: Shattered Halls[/li][li]Caverns of Time: Dark Portal (“Black Morass”)[/li][li]Tempest Keep: The Mechanar[/li][li]Tempest Keep: The Botanica[/li][li]Tempest Keep: The Arcatraz[/li][li]Magister’s Terrace[/li][/ul] Then it’s on to Northrend! No problem!

So yesterday I hopped onto a zeppelin not knowing where it was going and it dumped me off at the first flight point on the way because it was going to Northrend and I only have BC. It was kinda funny, I would have been so confused if the game hadn’t told me I needed WotLK. Ships just give you an excuse not to take off if they’re going to Northrend, so I thought since the zeppelin was leaving I’d be good.

Learned Vanish, it is awesome. Doesn’t work on bosses though, lol. But it’s great to have something like that, I waited way too long to figure out the mechanics of Feign Death on my Hunter. I’m doing a lot of things better this time - like actually learning First Aid.
