World of Warcraft General Discussion

Can you explain this hint please?

Jewelcrafters have an ability, Prospect, that takes 5 pieces of ore and tries to find a gem in them (in other words, there’s a chance (that increases with crafting level) that a usable jewelcrafting gem can be created for every 5 pieces of ore).

Lightbringer does seem Alliance-heavy. All ten of my toons there are Alliance, so I have no room left to test the Horde side on that server. My first Herbalist night elf was over on Cairne, where she’s my only Alliance toon amongst nine Hordies. She’s on the same server with my Herbalist undead mage, which is part of why I’ve brought this up again - she was my first herbalist and wasn’t making any money at it, while the undead herbalist on the same server but opposite faction is making money.

Well, I did that :stuck_out_tongue: If you’re new enough to the game that you don’t have the professions all worked out yet, and you’re playing your first night elf and you wander into that house in Dolanaar and find the Herbalism trainer, it shouldn’t be surprising that people would say, “I’ll try that.” And even though I do know the different professions now (well, except for Engineering, Jewelcrafting, and Inscription, which I have yet to take), I still tend to take Herbalism (and maybe Skinning as well) on my night elves because, well, what else is there for a lowbie night elf to gather if I intend to spend my time leveling in Teldrassil instead of running off to a different race’s starting zone? Even Skinning isn’t all that great for night elves - those Nightsaber cats are the only skinnable beasts in Teldrassil (okay, and rabbits and squirrels too, but, well …). And from a RP perspective, it just seems wrong for a nature-respecting night elf druid perspective to be slaughtering animals just to skin them.

My experience with waiting until high levels to take a gathering profession (ala my human pally taking Mining at lvl 50) has taught me that I’d rather level my gathering profession alongside leveling my toon instead of wasting time later running around lowbie areas gathering materials — time that could be better spent questing in level-appropriate areas.
On another topic … on my human paladin, I have found myself in the position of needing to find a way to tell another player to stop bothering me, without hurting her (I assume it’s a her) feelings. There’s a gnome DK I met and teamed up with in Shadowmoon Valley a while back. More recently I helped her with some quests in Dragonblight. I don’t mind doing that, and she seems to play her DK competently. But what’s starting to annoy me is the way she wants to chat chat chat chat chat chat chat with me when we’re not in a party, or even in the same zone.

Last night I was questing in Grizzly Hills when she whispered me to ask if I could help her with some stuff back in Outland. It turned out she was trying to get the [Medium Rare] achievement and wanted me to come help her locate one of the Outland rare spawns. I turned her down, explaining that I was busy with a quest chain in Grizzly Hills. She was okay with that and ended up getting one of her guild mates to come help her, but she still kept up a steady stream of questions about where I found the ones I’d killed, etc. etc.

She also insists on forming a party so she can talk in the Party channel (I assume so that she doesn’t have to keep clicking on my name to whisper to me), which I don’t like to do because I feel stupid with word bubbles appearing over my head when there’s obviously nobody there that I’m talking to (not to mention they block my view), and also my old eyes for some reason have a hard time reading that bluish-grayish Party Chat text color in the chat box, particularly against the predominantly white backgrounds in Northrend.

Anyway, I just got especially irritated last night because I probably could have dinged lvl 77 if I hadn’t had to keep stopping to reply to her non-stop tells. When she gave up in Outland and announced she was coming to Grizzly Hills where I was, I went ahead and rode back to the Westfall Brigade Encampment’s “inn” and logged off, because I knew she’d be wanting to come tag along on my quests. She’s clearly a “kid” and I really don’t want to be mean, so I guess I just need to find a nice way to explain that I have a job with weird hours, and sometimes I only have a couple hours available to play and that I’d like to spend that time getting my quests done instead of chatting :frowning:

You know you can turn the word balloons off in either Interface or Display, right? (I don’t remember offhand which one right now)

I did not know that!

It’s kind of stupid, but this hadn’t really occurred to me, and my main’s a Jewelcrafter. I wonder, though, is it really that much more profitable? To get a stack of 20 gems that you could sell for 100-150 gold (here I’m thinking of Star Rubies or Aquamarines), you’d have to go through a minimum of 100 ore (Mithril in this case), with each stack of 20 selling for anywhere from 20 to 40 gold each. It’s not that big a difference.

Granted, as with everything market-related, this will vary by server, and I haven’t looked at gem prices that recently on mine.

I can’t help you with the “I’m not your babysitter”, but to change the color of any channel:
hover your mouse over your chat window until the “general” tab appears; right click on that tab, then select “settings.”
Every channel has a square with its color: click on the square to select a different color.
Turning bubbles on and off is done in Interface/Social.

Haha, I guess it’s just another example of a particular idiosyncrasy of mine. I’m the kind of person who can’t so much as play a new board game without reading through the instructions first. I just *don’t get *people who plunge straight in… And I’m sure they’re equally mystified by people like me who spend all that time reading stuff that they could just figure out as they go along. :stuck_out_tongue:

1.) As observed by someone else, you can turn off party chat bubbles under Options → Interface. (In fact, I think party chat bubbles were added some time during BC… I remember signing on one day and suddenly “WHOAMG WTF IS THIS CRAP DOING OVER MY HEAD GET IT OFF GET IT OFF.”)

2.) You mentioned clicking on someone’s name to reply… You don’t have to do that. To reply to a tell (whisper), hit “R” and it will respond to the most recent person to send you a tell. Once that reply line is up, you can hit “Tab” to cycle through the people you’ve recently replied to. If you’d like to send another tell to someone you’ve recently whispered, but who hasn’t yet replied, you can type “Shift+R” (I think that’s the correct modifier, anyway), and it will bring up the last person you whispered (“Tab” again here to cycle through other recent sends).

3.) Be polite but firm. Say, “I’m sorry, I enjoyed questing with you when I was in Outland, but now I really need to focus on the quests I’m doing here.” Then, if you like, you can put up “/dnd Questing,” and she should get the message if you just stop replying.

ETA:

Note for anyone without a JC: this **will destroy **the ore in question (in the same way that Milling destroys herbs or Disenchanting destroys items).

You can also change the background color and opacity of any chat window–I can always tell when my friend was logged into my account because my Guild chat window will have a black background and the font will be a few sizes larger.

/r, isn’t it?

I’ve never seen /dnd, what is that?

And no, it’s “r”.

You can hit Enter and then type “/r,” **or **you can just hit “R.”

It works kind of the same way as /afk.

1.) It will put a <DND> tag in front of the name that people will see displayed above your character’s head (if they have that enabled).
2.) If anyone whispers you, it will auto-reply with something along the lines of, “Character does not wish to be disturbed. DND: Questing” where “Questing” would be whatever you typed after the slash command (in this case, “/dnd Questing”).
3.) Unlike /akf, /dnd does not give any auto-reply to readychecks.
4.) There is no auto-clear for DND–you must type /dnd again to clear it, or exit the game.
5.) IIRC, if you switch characters without exiting the game entirely, your DND status will carry over to the next character.

Well, I’m a Mac user and so I don’t believe in manuals :stuck_out_tongue: Okay, that’s not entirely true - I practically had the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 core rulebooks memorized.

Handy to know. I knew about the <return> followed by <alt+up arrow> to repost a previous comment/command, but not the “R” thing.

I guess I’ll come up with something similar to that. She’s reminding me very strongly of a 13-year-old girl that was in my old guild for a while, who I bumped into in Wetlands when I was around lvl 26 and she was a lvl 19 warlock. She begged and so I let her tag along with me, though she was too low-level for the zone and was clearly more interested in running around to get the exploration achievement than she was in questing (also, her voidwalker must have been set on “Aggressive” because she was managing to aggro absolutely everything, which was always followed by cries of "WAIT! HLEP ME!!!) I didn’t encounter her “in the field” after that one time, but I saw her in guild chat all the time - every time somebody would mention what instance they were about to do she’d start begging to come along and didn’t seem to believe anybody who told her she was too low-level and couldn’t even get into the instance. Then I didn’t see her for a while until I bumped into her at the SW bank a few levels later. I noted her new tabard and asked, “New guild, huh?” and she said, “Yeah! It’s the best guild EVER!!!”

Wait … I can change the text size, too? That’s awesome

I also wanted to mention how much I’ve enjoyed questing in Grizzly Hills … until I got to this !@#$% Dun Algor quest chain. Good grief, I swear this pair of Explorer’s League dwarves have sent me in and out of that place a dozen times already. Gee, this sure is fun killing the same mobs over and over and over

I mean, c’mon now. If a questgiver can tell me, “I want you to kill 6 of these guys, 6 of those guys, and 6 of them guys” all in one quest, why can’t these dwarves tell me, all in one quest, “I want you go in there and fetch Item X and Item Y, and while you’re in there grab Item Z as well”?

Why Isn’t my curse client showing my dead-tooth jack quest?

jayjay gave me some co-odrinates, but I cannot even FIND the Red Ridge Mountains! The cursor just keeps missing them!

I do show Duskwood, but cannot find the mountains…

Can I ask for some help if I pay 5 gold?

Thanks

Q

Shit. I think there’s something wrong with my curse client.

What? delete and re-install?

I can’t help with your curse client, as I’m not sure what you mean by it being unable to show the quest. (I don’t use the client)

Rereading jayjay’s post, you don’t want to find the Redridge mountains – if you do, that means you went too far east. They’re the mountains on the right side of the Elwynn Forest map, I believe.

Take a look at http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=6093#comments and click on the map to zoom in to see where the gold dot is – I find that easier to use than the thottbot version because it’s bigger.

I don’t play on your server or I’d offer to help out in person (so to speak) – so I hope this post is helpful.

I FOUND that little "Coark-Soaker’!

I just didn’t understand, that I wasn’t supposed to go to the Red Ridge Mountains “all the way!”

Once I get resurrected, we’ll get ol’ Merle (Haggard) his badge back!

Thanks, “Jim Morrison!”

“Car hiss by my window…”

Quasi

Yay! Good job, Quasi!
