World of Warcraft: Legion general discussion thread 19 July 2016

Sounds like Cataclysm all over again.

There’s a huge range of DPS. I struggle to put out 100k or so, with ilvl 822 gear, on my fire mage. I see other players cranking out 250K-450K. I ran a couple of heroics today, and I was utterly irrelevant. All the wacky mechanics (that I loathe, and have loathed for several expansions now) don’t matter much when the boss has a life expectancy of under a minute. Guess I was just lucky to land in way overgeared groups today…

Depends on what you mean by “complete”. You score the achievement when you fill in the entire graph, which is 34 trait points. I did that last week, and I was planning on funneling additional APs into powering up my offspec weapons, but the bonus trait is just too yummy to ignore. Start with a flat 5% damage bonus for the cost of one trait point (1.6 million AP, I think). That’s pretty tasty, and not too expensive. After that, 0.5% damage bump per trait point, for up to 20 stacks. That feels like less of a value, although ending up with a flat universal 15% damage buff is pretty appealing. I’d still like to get the other weapons up to snuff, so I may alternate between leveling them and the bonus trait on my main weapon.

I took a similar strategy – took the first 5% increase, and now catching up my offspec weapons. Which is awesomely fast at AK 24/25.

I’m two upgrades away from finishing out the graph and 5% buff on Ebonchill. I have Felo’melorn about half done - all in one fell swoop from a big AP drop in Suramar, only been using it because I got the hidden appearance and wanted to put enough AP in it to do the achieves for doing the quests, dungeons and HKs with the hidden appearance active.

I mean “cannot spend any more points on this weapon because every thing is maxed out”.

Just a few ilvl makes a huge difference. Rocking about ilvl 847 now. In an AOE fight, I can hit 250K dps, sometimes more. Even on single targets I range from 180-200 DPS. Heroics are now easy. I only do them for the AP drops any more. I think the next tier of LFR should open on Tuesday? Hope so.

Dunno how to get into a mythic dungeon…there doesn’t seem to be a button for it like regular or heroics. I’d like to do at least one to clear a quest I’ve had for a long time…need to kill Skovald on Mythic.

I’m neglecting my alts. I got the weapon on my druid, tankadin, and maybe my horde warrior…been so long since I played him I’m not sure. Haven’t run out of things to do on my mage yet…

First, face the fact that being an altaholic is no longer feasible. I did, and even tho I miss all of my other toons, I like seeing Bomage make real character progress, not just progress for my bullshit Garrison (or Class Hall, etc.).

Second, worry less about ilvl and more about your Artifact’s power level. That’s the key to your personal power. Be sure and do all your Artifact Research as fast as possible, too.

Last, I find I get in more Mythics if I start the group myself. It doesn’t take long to fill up at all. For some reason, trying to join a Mythic group as dps, even well-geared dps, is more time consuming than just starting the group myself.

I seem to remember from early in the xpac that you can’t queue for mythics like you do for regular or heroics. You have to have a group made outside of the dungeon finder before it will let you into a mythic.

Correct, you can’t use the automatic LFD tool for mythics – but you can use the custom group finder. You also have to know where the dungeon entrance is, since it won’t port you in automatically

How the hell are you supposed to solo Eye of Azuna? I think it’s necessary for flight and I don’t like doing groups.

Also, how do you know what your iLevel is? Is there a stat somewhere that I’m overlooking?

What an unnecessary pain in the ass. Why would they do that?

Aye; it makes doing Mythics a PITA. Like I said above, I seem to have better luck starting my own Mythic groups than I do trying to join other’s groups.

ETA: In the Looking For Group/Looking For Raid window, go down to Pre-Made Groups; click Dungeon and in the search bar, type the name of an instance you want to do on Mythic. If you have a Keystone, try and do that one, but Keystone Mythics are timed, so be aware that your group is gonna try and move FAST.

Not sure why you think you have to solo Eye of Azuna.

Your ilvl is now part of your character window. Should be the first thing on the right hand side of the window, in big numbers.

It’s analagous to how you can queue for LFR but you must find a group and go to the door for all the higher level raids.

There’s also the whole process with mythic keystones that wouldn’t work well with the group finder.

But it is a pain in the ass, especially since you can sleepwalk through at least M+4 these days and there are a few dungeons that a mythic only which means doing those dungeon quests are a bit of a hassle.

Because I prefer solo play tremendously and group crap has never been required for major questlines like flying before. The dungeon stuff has always been a side-quest.

As far as I know, I can’t get flying (or proceed on my professions) without Eye of Azuna, and I can’t do it alone. So…

Also, there’s some new behavior in Legion that sucks: swarming. It happened before but not like it does now. Rather than actually making you think or figure out ways to take bad guys out a few at a time, any attack triggers everyone to swarm. It’s most visible is Suramar: in the city yeah, but there’s an area up in the NW corner filled with Nightfallen. And if you piss of one Nightfallen, they all rush you. This sucks for the solo player. To do one specific quest (grab three books) it cost me something like 400 gold in armor repair costs and about 2 hours.

7.x play puts a lot of premium on cleave/AoE nowadays. Getting mobbed is pretty much par for the course, but the current talent/spellbook build for most classes has lots of mandatory cleave. My Marksman hunter has to be exquisitely careful not to overpull because the standard rotation requires two different AoE attacks, and one of them is absolutely required to not completely gimp the rotation and gutting throughput.

When Sidewinders/Marked Shot/Aimed Shot locks together, my DPS shoots through the ceiling, but when Sidewinders grabs extra groups of mobs at the edges of a fight we’re already having trouble with, I get kicked.

ETA: I still liked it better when the best guidance was “Never spec for trash and groups. Focus single-target.”

So…what? Are you literally planning to ignore whole swaths of the game because you don’t like 5-man content? 80% of the goodies gated behind group content is satisfiable in heroic (i.e., sleepwalk faceroll fights), and 90% of what’s left is satisfiable in LFR. I’m more antisocial than you, I damn near guarantee, but those things just don’t count. I just queue, join, pewpew, and win. The other people are there to tank, heal, and maybe help me pewpew. For a “social” activity, it’s still pretty damn close to solo play. The worst part is waiting for the queue to pop, and that’s self-inflicted since I’ve chosen a group talent build that prevents world play (specifically, Lone Wolf for a flat damage bonus but no pet. No pet in world play means no tank, and no self-respecting hunter would ever consent to face-tanking when he can have someone else do his bleeding for him.)

Missed edit window, but want to add:

Even in world quests, surprise AoE overpull is bad, especially with swarming mobs. Try doing one of the falcosaur daily world quests, grabbing groups of dino-birds as they spawn in at the fringes of your epic duel with the Matriarch, because Sidewinders keeps tagging one of the little baby birds and bringing the whole stinking flock. That’ll get you dead in no time flat. Clear carefully and then go balls-to-the-walls on the boss fight so you can down it before the respawns begin.

That said, my response has been to get better at managing AoE and responding to surprises. It is doable.

I’m not Fenris, but I quit the game last year over this exact issue. As an altoholic who had the most fun fun playing the AH and doing professions, Legion’s insistence that all roads must go through five man content killed the game dead for me. Well, that and the artifact power grind, which is done most efficiently by … wait for it … grinding even more five man content.

Now, if y’all are having fun with it, that’s great, and I hope you continue to have fun with it. I just wanted to point out that Fenris isn’t the only one salty about all the content gated behind 5 mans.

I notice that you keep saying this… you know there’s no flying in Legion at all right now, aye?

And once they do implement flying, it’s a long series of quests and achievements that you’ll have to go thru.
