Basically the auction house is the only way I can afford to do anything in WoW. I play my blood and night elves heavily so when I get a mail armor drop, it’s useless to me but can make me some gold. I also highly suggest building stacks of stuff like silk or mageweave etc. Whenever I hit the bank, I always follow up with the auction house. Before you post an auction, do a search to see what an item similar goes for and definitely post an auction with a buy out price.
I thought you couldn’t cancel an auction. I may be thinking about bids, but I know one of them can’t be cancelled. I think I learned that from the hints in the loading screen.
I see. gold selling/ buying bewilders me. Its not that hard to make gold in game. I used to think it was when I was first introduced to the game…it seemed like all of my money was spent on food/drink and repairing items. But its not really that difficult to use the AH to make money.
I’m only now beginning to understand what gear is good for my main character and what isn’t (thanks to you guys!). So when I get a green or blue drop that I can’t use I’ll auction it off, along with ore. (I spent about 300 god myself last night upgrading my own gear to mostly blue items)
I need to find out what honor points are good for though. A guildie said I could buy stuff with it, but I don’t know where or how.
I also need to get better at PvP…how can some characters move so fast? Last night a rogue ran circles around me, literally. I don’t understand how a lvl 41 rogue could do so much damage to my lvl 50 so fast. Maybe I’m too old to be fighting caffiene addicted teenagers.
It can be confusing. Outside all of the battlegrounds, there will be an NPC (usually called a quartermaster) who you can trade marks of honor and honor points for equipment with.
Most of the good PVPers use the mouse to move and use hotkeys for their abilities. As opposed to people like me who use the arrow keys to move and who have all of their abilities in buttons onscreen to click with the cursor. Which is one of the reasons I suck at PVP…I just don’t have the reflexes to do the twitchy stuff.
Bids can’t be cancelled, but auctions can.
Honor points can by PvP gear from specific honor vendors. There are some in Ogrimmar, in the Hall of Legends. These generally also require Marks of Honor from specific battlegrounds. There are also PvP mounts and other items (tabards, potions, etc.).
Rogues have a Sprint ability that can make them wicked fast. Also, they could be using a speed potion.
Ok - here’s for the higher end part of the game.
I have 4 70+ characters:
Priest
Druid
Rogue
Mage
I’m mostly playing my rogue these days because she just doesn’t die as much. I know my guild would love for me to level my druid and priest - but I’ve just never been that good at the talent tree thing - and with all the talent points refunded recently, I’m not convinced I’ve picked the best levelling choices.
Do you have a talent tree build that you really love on your character?
There’s also a building in Orgrimmar/Stormwind with a collection of NPCs that sell most (all?) of the weapons/armor/jewels/designs/mounts that you can purchase with points/marks/arena points. So it’s not necessary to chase to each of the battleground entrances for gear.
I’ve never done a battleground. Not even sure what it is…is it just a free for all pvp place or a heavily ganking zone?
The battlegrounds are instanced zones with specific objectives which are won through PVP.
Warsong Gulch can be entered at lvl 10. It’s basically Capture the Flag. There is a Horde team and an Alliance team. They each have a base at opposite ends of the zone. You have to capture the enemy team’s flag and get it back to your base, but the capture only counts if YOUR flag is still in place. Battles are best of 3.
Arathi Basin begins at (I think) lvl 20. There are five objectives that you have to capture and hold: Mines, Lumbermill, Stables, Smithy and one other that I can’t remember. Battles last a certain amount of time and whoever holds the most objectives at the end of it wins.
Alterac Valley is the biggest battleground on Old School Azeroth. I’m not totally sure what the objectives are, but there are Events like divine manifestations and stuff like that. The zone is HUGE…you can easily end up doing four different things that have nothing to do with the actual battle but that you have quests for.
Eye of the Storm is in Outland. I have no idea what it’s about…never been there.
Wintergrasp is in Northrend. Again, no idea what it’s about.
All battlegrounds are graduated by level, depending on the level you’re allowed to enter: 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and (I assume) 70-80.
Neither. It’s a PvP instance with a set of objectives defined by the battleground. They are lvl-limited in 10 level increments (20-29, 30-39, etc.). Warsong Gulch is capture the flag, Arathi Basin is “king of the hill” (with multiple hills), etc. You can either go to the faction-specific entrance or talk to a representative in a capital city which will port you into the instance. You get marks of honor for your “team” winning or doing something successfully (each battleground has its own rules on that).
As for the Auction House, here’s the system that works best for me.
-
Download and install the UI (user interface)** Auctioneer** - you can find it along with a bunch of other UI helps at Curse Gaming
-
Dedicate one character to be your banker. Personally, mine is a level 5 hunter named Swahb that is permanently parked in Stormwind. (for those curious - Swahb stands for Storm Wind Auction House Babe).
-
Scan the Auction House (it’s one of the functions of Auctioneer). This will start a database of what has been posted and makes it easy to start figuring out pricing.
-
Mail all your extra, unneeded items to your banker character whenever your other questing characters are near a mailbox.
-
This leaves your questing bags empty and puts all your Auction House stuff in one place on one character - much more manageable.
-
I make it a habit to always park my questing characters at an Inn before I log off them (you should anyway for the resting xp) and mail all items to Swahb.
-
The first/last character I log off/on of is Swahb - she can check the mail for all the new items sent and post them, collect the cash from completed auctions, and then also pick up any items from expired auctions.
-
Scan the Auction House regularly (i do it once/twice a week)- it’s a good thing to just plan to walk away for 15 minutes while it scans. For example, when I get home I might log in first thing - set Swahb to scanning - and then get changed out of my work clothes, grab something for dinner, etc - before settling down to actual play.
-
If you find that certain items are just NOT selling no matter what price you set (Auctioneer will advise you - but it’s always good to double-check the price yourself) than you can sell them to a vendor or send them to a questing character that has the disenchanting skill. Often the enchanting dust is worth more than the piece itself.
-
Enjoy all the extra WoW gold you now have

Once I started doing this - I went from having some gold to lots of gold. When it came time to train 4 questing characters with mount training and buy mounts - I just had Swahb send them the money - no major extra questing.
I also have a cottage industry system set up - one questing character is a leatherworker, another is a tailor/enchanter, a third is my herbalist/alchemist/fisherman, the fourth is my “farmer” for mining (pure cash cow) and skinning (another cash cow when I don’t need it for leatherworking). That saves me from having to buy health/mana pots, enchants, armor kits, or fish to level cooking. If any of them needs mats they can’t/won’t gather themselves, Swahb buys it off the AH and sends it on.
Similarly, if any of my questing characters starts accumulating a lot of gold (like my rogue, who had almost 800g the other day) they send it to Swahb for safe keeping.
Just my 30 cents . . .

Or use Wow Matrix. It makes installing Add-ons easy.
BGs are team PvP, Horde versus the scum :D. They vary from 10 people per side in Warsong Gulch (WG) to 40 per side in AlteracValley (AV). You can join with as many people as the BG will hold, or by yourself (there are add-ons to help do this as well, so you don’t spend a month waiting).
Each of the BGs is a different game: WG is capture the flag, first team to three captures wins. Arathi Basis (AB) is a kind of king of the hill, there are five resource stations that give you points depending on how many of them your team holds; 15 people. AV is a kill the king game, each side having an NPC general that the other side needs to defeat to win; there are a lot of sub-goals here. Eye of the Storm (EotS) is a combanation of WG and AB; 4 towers and flag that can be brought to a tower your side owns for points (the more towers, the more points). The Strand of the Ancients (Strand) is a vehicle based attack and defend game, horde always starts defending.
Personally, I only go into WG for marks (each of the BGs awards 1 mark for a loss or 3 marks for a win), and I’ve found the honor from Strand to be equal or better than AV, and it’s so much more fun that I honor farm there now.
Wintergrasp isn’t a BG, but a world pvp zone that gives a world buff to the side that wins it. It’s a vehicle attack/defend game as well, but being world based has no restriction on the number of players. This can cause considerable server lag, so watch your raid timing during battles there. It’s fun, but can easily overwhelm older PCs.
As a final note, remember that dying to a player does not give a dura (durability) hit like a normal death does. This counts for self-inflicted deaths as well, so remember to life-tap/hellfire yourself down if a wipe is called =P
Question for those of you who’ve been in a battleground: Aside from BG-related quests, do you earn any XP from killing players, or is it just honor points? I just hit 49 last night and I’d like to poke at Arathi Basin, but I’m trying to keep in synch with my girlfriend XP-wise and she doesn’t want anything to do with PVP (she wigged out when we had to attack a PVP-flagged NPC in Stormwind, despite no Horde possibly being able to jump us there).
You don’t get any XP from Battlegrounds. There was apparently discussions to add this to cut down on twinking, but it was not added. It’s just honor points and marks of honor.
Only honor. PVP kills don’t give you any XP, but if you’re killed in PVP you don’t suffer equipment damage, either.

I haven’t tried that one yet. Curse has a monitoring function that automatically checks and downloads any of my normal UIs. Out of curiousity - which do you use?
I currently use Questhelper (omg - love love), Auctioneer, Outfitter, Titan Panel, Omen, Deadly Boss Mods, and a few others. The only one I occassionally hate is Outfitter because I’m always getting new gear and it hates all my switching around.
Just honor. They were going to add XP to player kills to get rid of twinking, but didn’t. Which makes me happy, I wouldn’t want to lose my sorta-twink stress relief.
Sounds good, thanks.
Yeah, I never liked the idea of XP for PVP. Just doesn’t mesh well, unless it’s an all-PVP game like Planetside.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/battlegrounds/ ( a bit outdated - it’s missing Wintergrasp and Strand of the Ancients and the 70-79, 80 brackets added to the other BGs with Wrath, but it has all the general info)
They are essentially PvP minigames and the best place to get honor points and honor kills. Each game is Horde v. Alliance and has some sort of objective for victory. You will play with/against players from other servers filling out each team.
The traditional method for entering a battleground is to go to the battleground entrance for your faction and speak to the NPCs and enter the queue there. You will want to do this every so often as there will be quests to accomplish certain tasks in the battlegound.
The easier method is to ask your friendly guard in any major city for the Battlemasters. Go where they lead you and you may queue for any of the battlegrounds with the appropriate masters. When queueing, you will probably just want to choose “first available” from the list of active battlegrounds. A PVP icon will appear by your minimap and when you mouse over it it will tell you how long you’ve been in a queue and about how long that queue is taking.
From Friday through Sunday, a different battleground every week will be celebrating a battleground holiday and you will find emissaries for that battleground all over any major city, and you may queue with them as well. Playing a BG during a holiday awards bonus honor and reputation.
You may queue for up to 3 different battlegrounds at the same time. While in queue, you are free to quest, fish, craft, or play the AH. When your turn has arrived, a message will pop up telling you you are eligible to enter the BG and you may click the message to enter. If you’re not ready yet, you can click “hide” to be asked again later, but you will have only 1 minute to enter the BG or you will lose your place in line. You cannot enter a BG when in combat. This can be frustrating when your turn has finally come up in the 1hr queue for Alterac Valley and you’re stuck in combat in the 10th Arathi Basin you’ve played while waiting and can’t get out in time to leave.
During the battleground, help your team complete its objectives and don’t be afraid to die. If (when) you die, you will be resurrected at your team’s graveyard(s) will full health and your pet or minion will be resurrected, too. Graveyard rezs are mass rez on a 30 second or so cycle (so you will wait from 1-30 seconds to rez depending on how you hit the cycle), but there’s a limit to the number of players that can be rezzed at one time, so if your whole group wipes you may have to wait for the next cycle.
You can also corpse run and rez the traditional way, but at only 50% health and 50% mana and your pet/minion will stay dead (or at least you’ll have to re-call it). However, players may loot enemy players corpses and remove their “insignia” forcing them to rez at a graveyard only. If you see an enemy corpse, loot it. A corpse with an insignia still on it is a chance for the enemy to sneak behind your defenses.
Don’t be frustrated with your performance at first - it takes time to get used to the feel and strategy of each BG (and in AV, time to learn how not to get lost) and you will find there are some players who are just unkillable. In the low level brackets, players will create “twinks”, which are players level 19, 29, 39, 49 that have the best weapons and armor available for that level loaded with health, stamina, and agility enchants. They’ll have three times your health and cut you to ribbons. If you’re lucky, your team will have a few, too, and they’ll keep eachother busy. In the 50’s brackets, Death Knights arrive (in my battlegroup, the 50s brackets are 80% death knights) and and very overpowered for this level and you’ll find their Death Grip skill to be a shock if you’re not a melee class. In brackets with level 70 characters, you’ll find players who have a toon that was maxxed out from BC content and has all the top Arena or PVP gear that was available pre-expansion. These characters are also near unkillable (one lev 70 paladin routinely slices through lev 79 characters who aren’t ready for her) and almost more frustrating, because while you know if you had the time, money, and friends to run you though instances you could get your lev 18 to twink-quality, too, the pre-BC arena gear is just not available at lev 70 any more and you need to be lev 80 to get the good stuff.
