World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Album Cover Elimination Game.

Although the album covers are broken down into 9 sets of ten, that was designed to help me out,
not to restrict the voter. By whatever means you deem easiest, select 10 record covers for elimination.
However, as much as possible, only consider the cover art. Not knowing the music, or really disliking it should have no bearing on what you think of the cover art. This is all about the superficial. We are indeed judging by the cover alone.

Hope that all links works, but things change and links might become broken for whatever reason. I will try to repair failed links, however, the web is filled with these images, if the link is broken don’t wait for it be fixed, go check it out for yourself. Okay?

**Voting will last 2-3 days per round, depending on level of interest and the randomness of work. All are welcomed to vote, but please only vote once per round. **

Rank the album covers in order of preference from 1) hate to see it go, but a line has to be drawn somewhere to 10) why is this even here? Each ranking will be scored as following:
1= .1
2= .2
3=.3
4=.4
5=.5
6=1
7=2
8=3
9=4
10=5

The Top Five score getters will be removed. If a particular set is overwhelmingly selected for destruction, the remainders will be reshuffled into the remaining sets as time goes on. This process of elimination will go on until we reach 10 album covers. We will then try to use this voting method, with reverse scoring, to determine their proper ranking. A feast for the eyes! A challenge for the mind!

The first five I have no real problems with. Not top ten stuff, so maybe some points are deserved.

OK, I think I know what’s going on here. The only way I’ll be able to do this is to download all the covers and look at them en masse. I just hope I do it right, because the at first glance the OP is pretty confusing. I’ll check back in in about an hour.

On second thought, fuck it. Why should I denigrate somebody’s art? It’s all good. It’s all rock and roll.

I’ve no idea what this is about. Are we supposed to pick the ones we like, or the ones we don’t like? I presume, which ever it is, per group.

Why not ask people to choose their own favourite album covers?

Because that’s what people do, whether they admit or not. And it’s not rock and roll, it’s cover art. That’s the only concern here. And if this was about the music (and it’s not) then no, it’s not all good. In fact much of it is very very bad.

As an elimination game, you’re picking ones you don’t like first. As stated in the OP, the Sets were designed to help me out, not limit how one votes.

Of the 90 covers in this list, 12 are from the 60’s, 51 (fifty-one!) are from the 70’s, 16 are from the 80’s, 10 from the 1990’s, and the entire last decade is represented by exactly 1 album and it’s a Nickelback album of all things. :dubious:

Yep, earlier a thread on the World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Album Covers was run and this list was comprised from that thread. Sorry your influence was missed, but these things happen. This in no way excludes you from a vote now though.

Album cover art has become less and less of a consideration since LPs gave way to CDs in the mid-80s. I used to spend hours on liner notes, lyrics and inserts that came with albums in the 70s. Not much of that stuff was provided with CDs, and record companies had less interest in creating great visuals on a smaller canvas.

The fact that MTV was offering more lasting visual images of hit songs around the same time also cooled interest in album art. I don’t know what Madonna albums look like but several of her videos from the 80s have stuck with me.

Then I got a player that holds 300 CDs and all my jewel boxes went into storage, so I rarely saw covers. In recent years everything I buy is through iTunes and I never see the cover at all, or if I do it’s tiny on my iPod.

There has been some good album cover art in the last 10 years. If you want you can blow off the last decade and make up whatever reason for it that you’re comfortable with but I assure you the quality has been at least equal to if not exceeding the ‘stoner with a colored pencil’ level of artistry that the 70’s are known for. This list skews to a certain era because of the age of the participants, not because the album cover is an art form lost to time.

I’d say that this just isn’t working. The rules really are too convoluted. Another problem is that the OP hasn’t set his standards low enough. The choices are more in the least good range than truly awful.

But it is an interesting idea. There are books and websites devoted to bad album art. It does depend on what you think is bad: is it bad because it’s revolting, or because it’s corny, or just plain weird?

The covers in question were taken from the thread World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Album Covers. So the overall quality of the covers here should be high, but now we’re trying to weed out all but the very best. So, like any other elimination game, you’re picking the one’s you like the least and ranking them from 1) Not so Bad to 10) Oh, I really don’t care for this one at all.

The trouble with this is that my favourite covers aren’t in your lists. Two I would vote for are Shine On Brightly by Procol Harum, and A Saucerful Of Secrets by Pink Floyd, for example.

Sorry you missed the World’s Greatest Album Cover thread, which is where this list was comprised. Nonetheless, given that your personal favorites aren’t listed, this in no way prevents you from voting on any of these. Think of it as voting for the President. Never what you really want, but what the hell, might as well vote for the lark of it all.

Or not as the case may be. This all designed as a diversion, not as the last word in album cover art. If any one is looking for an authoritative selection of rock n roll art, this is certainly the wrong spot.
