Their horns always have bagels with a schmear hung on them.
[del]Chimera[/del] Juror #10: Oh, sure, there are some good things about 'em, too. Look, I’m the first one to say that. I’ve known a couple who were OK … Listen to me. Listen.
[del]Some of the board[/del] Juror #4: [del]We[/del] I have. Now sit down and don’t open your mouth again.
Damn it, spaced off cooking my pizza and turned it into a carbon puck. Fucking Italians and their delicious food. At least Mousselini was able to cook the pizzas on time!
Oh fercrissakes - someone who agrees with someone else must be a mindless yes man?
Obviously, you didn’t read my post, since I agreed with the OP’s definition of racism, and also defined it. However, thank you for providing an illustration of my point - just because you have an expanding definition of any word doesn’t mean that it is the correct definition, nevermind whether anyone else in the world will even know about it. Racism is one of those words, so for your fight against ignorance -
If you will please note, none of those definitions include noticing that when X group calls into the center, they tend to be assholes. I’m quite sure that if the OP had been about how X group shits bunnies and roses, you would not have a problem with that, it is only because he noticed negative tendencies that you have your panties in a wad. Is it not racism to notice positive tendencies in a particular group, or is it that you are one of those, er, interesting folks who try to pretend that all people are exactly the same?
That was the really amusing part of this little exercise, watching the PC Police fall all over themselves going apeshit over small parts of what I said, while ignoring all of the rest because that didn’t fit their requirements.
And that’s the thing. They DO demand that we pretend all people are exactly the same. To me that is it’s own form of culturalism*,** in that it denies the distinctness of other peoples and their cultures. Our area has a LOT of immigrants and I have worked with enough of them to respect that they have different cultural experiences and expectations, and be able to work with them in a generally positive manner. (Example: Somali (born) man with his wife? Talk to him, not her, even if it is about her, or he’ll be offended.)
Racial Stereotyping is assigning specific behaviors to specific racial groups, not racism.
If I stereotype New York Jews as being particularly nasty on the phone, that isn’t racism or anti-semitism. I’m not saying that all Jews act a certain way, as fine a distinction as that is. I’m saying that the Culture of New York City seems to encourage being an asshole on the phone, and that one particular subset (NYC Jews) pushes it even farther while other parts of that (Jewish) culture NOT located in NYC do not engage in this behavior any more than other members of their localized culture, and probably even less so.
Which is to say that I’m more a culturalist than a racist - I recognise that patterns of thought and behavior originate with culture and are not inherent in this thing we mistakenly call “race”. And absolutely, I admit that I do not respect certain aspects of other cultures. I’m not going to pretend to respect the idea that the Hmong should be allowed to marry off their 13 year old daughters to 35 year old men just because “that is their culture” (which they tried to argue in court after coming to the US), nor do I have to respect the criminal aspects of gang culture, or the “women have no rights” aspects of most Islamic cultures.
** I have noticed that the PC and ultraliberals have their own form of Racism in their horrible over-reaction to any hint of racism in themselves and others. Refusing to punish black students and athletes who broke rules that would get white students expelled, because they were afraid of the mere idea that they might just possibly be called “racist”. Refusing to hold black employees to the same standards of behavior as other officers, because they might cry “racism”. To act thusly is to hold an inner belief that Black people ARE inferior and cannot be expected to follow the rules, cannot be expected to do their jobs like people of other races. This is the tragedy of the ultraliberal PC crowd, in that they are merely subsuming their racism into a new form, rather than losing it altogether.
Here’s the deal. You opened your post by saying that what followed was not racism. You said this before anyone had read your post or said anything about it. The only reason somebody would be that defensive about accusations of racism would be if they were used to be accused of racism and had come to expect it because they were always being accused of racism.
And you know what kind of people are always being accused of racism? Racists.
Now maybe you’re somehow not a racist. But stop and think about it for a few minutes. Why would so many people be saying it if there wasn’t something to it? Maybe you need to consider the possibility that you are being racist even if that’s not your intention.
Or you can just keep on saying that it’s everyone else’s problem and you’re perfect just the way you are.
You know who constantly throws out claims of racism? Racists who refuse to recognize it in themselves. They’re like Closetted Gay Republicans, screaming and pointing the finger at everyone else to try to deny thier own damned selves.
The ONLY people I have ever had accuse me of racism in real life were people who were doing something wrong and got called on it. The kid who thought I was racist for not letting a 12 year old hang out in the locked up college basketball arena, the woman who got kicked out of the restaurant for following five other women into the restroom and trying to start a fight with them. People like that. The fellow employee who was widely known to openly hate all white people, especially white men older than him. It was nothing but an attempt at diversion from their own wrongs. “It’s not me, it’s YOU” (Help help, I’m bein’ repressed! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
Never said that, never would. In fact, I killed that magical bitch Mary Fucking Poppins over that one.
Did you read his post above yours, or mine above his? Society is so hyper-sensitive to the issue that any mention of any difference, particularly if it is negative at all, brings screams of racism. And because this board leans so liberal, it happens here more often than it does IRL.
Noticing differences, even if they are a negative to you, is not racism. Try this -
Obviously, there must be differences between the races and religions, or there wouldn’t be any need to give them different names, right?
No all of those differences are going to be considered positive, or even neutral to all people.
Being aware of these differences and talking about them is not racism - I provided the definition of that above.
Wow, sounds like the OP pretty much hates everyone, depending on the situation.
I don’t know, though. When working in retail, I had days like that myself.
But I don’t know why you would single out New York Jews and then go right on and condemn everybody else in NYC. Why not just condemn them all in the first place w/o singling out one group? Since everybody in NYC (or any other really big East Coast city) is Jewish anyway.
Right, the rest of us must all be pretending. Because you want to believe that everyone is a racist like you are - but you’re the only one who’s brave enough to say it openly.
For reasons I just can’t explain I don’t have a mental spreadsheet of the various types of asshole I’ve had to deal with broken down by race, ethnicity, religion, age, etc.
And given the incredibly small cross section of the people in those groups I’ve actually dealt with, I find it beyond stupid to think that any of those encounters tells me anything about those groups as a whole.
Now, just to pick one of those groups,
Chimera think you could give us an estimate of the percentage of that 1.97 million you’ve actually dealt with and that you’re basing your opinion of NYC Jews on.
Having worked customer service both phone and face to face, and as a bouncer briefly…
No, no you don’t. You don’t have to profile at all to do any of the jobs you claim to have done, and doing so makes you either lazy, an asshole, or both.
Truth be told, I don’t give a fuck whether you’re a racist or not, I just don’t like you. Self-satisfied condescension isn’t an attractive quality in people who’ve earned it, let alone from some smug call jockey who’s Figured It All Out.
Go ahead, recast your life so it stinks less like failure. All that matters is that you believe it, I guess.
Logic 101. There is a difference between “I’m not saying that all x” and “I’m saying that not all x” even though that is a finer distiction than you will care to admit. Also, logic will demontrate otherwise:
Chimera’s Claim: If I stereotype New York Jews as being particularly nasty on the phone, that isn’t racism or anti-semitism.
Scenario: An A-bomb detonates NYC killing all (easy to picture), including New York Jews.
Counter-scenario: Jews are killed everywhere in the world, except in NYC.
Therefore, “New York Jews” is coterminous with “Jews”.
