Worst TNG episode ever?

season 7, episode 14. sub rosa.

Dr. Crusher orgasms all over the screen as she’s seduced by an amorous specter.

There are some real stinkers in TNG, but Sub Rosa isn’t even close. I give you Aquiel, a murder mystery in which it turns out that the dog did it, Dark Page, where Troi visits her insipid mother’s brain to learn a Terrible Secret about her past, Genesis, where the whole crew magically turns into monsters, Justice, where Wesley is charged with a capital crime by diaper-clad aliens for walking on the grass, and last and definitely least, Shades of Gray, the only Star Trek clip show.

I’d have to say Shades of Gray, simply for being a clip show.

Genesis. Complete ridiculousness, and the episode that finally convinced me to stop watching the show. In fact, maybe there actually were even worse episodes after Genesis; I wouldn’t know because I never watched again.

Naw, I vote for the one with Wesley back from the Academy, Ashly Judd and that Orgasmatron video game everyone else gets addicted to. Like Crusher’s fuck-ghost, except with the crew drooling over graphics of a disc being tossed into a funnel.

The funny thing about Sub Rosa is that it was essentially written by Anne Rice. Either they plagiarized it from her, or she went by a different name in the credits. But, either way, she should not be writing Star Trek stories.

If you want to get at least some value out of that episode, try reading the Agony Booth review/recap.

No, that’s what makes it one of the best.

Though the presence of Ashley Judd does redeem it somewhat.

What is TNG?

Star Trek: The Next Generation.

This.

I think most of TNG season 1 & 2 are pretty bad and painful to watch today.

Nah, they were pretty damned awful when they first aired, too.

“Family.”. Boldly setting forth to leave no cliche unused. And other silliness – we know that Picard is in France because everyone speaks with an English accent. And mud wrestling!

The episode was hated when it first came out, and, not surprisingly learned the wrong lesson: that fans didn’t want stories that dealt with emotional issues. No, fans had no problem with that, but they should have not been the same cliches that we’ve seen thousands of times before (dead person granting closure via a video made before his death – something they’d already done badly with Tasha Yar).

Gotta disagree with you, there, Chuck.

Just doing an episode like ‘Family’ was unexpected as it finally showed the actual consequences of events in previous episodes. In all honesty, Picard should have been retired after his experience in the previous two episodes, if only for his own sanity. But that would leave us with no captain so he gets to spend an episode dealing with it instead of spending years in rehab.

But the fact that the producers were willing to do that sort of an episode showed guys and a faith in the strength of the cast in pulling it off. They would have been presented with NO negative feedback if the episode following BoBW2 had them at another ‘planet of the week’ and moved on without mentioning the Borg at all.

There were some grim ones, but I gotta go with Wesley and the Planet of the Hot Aerobics Instructors.

I kinda like Genesis.

My first thought was also Shades of Gray, but upon further reflection, I have to give the dubious distinction to Masks. Cheesy and utterly unintelligible.

So do I. All of the Lt. Barclay episodes were fun.

I’d say the worst three have already been mentioned: the clip show, Masks, and Crusher getting it on with a ghost.

For me, one of the worsts was the very last episode. All Good Things.

You have a senile Capt Picard. Humored by old friend Captain Beverly they go on one final mission. I hated the way they tried to wrap up 7 seasons into one tidy techno babble event.

I’m a big fan of Star Trek generally and the latter seasons of TNG in particular (DS9 is the other series I really like). That said, given the stories in the first season or two, I’m surprised that Picard’s crew was ever allowed to boldly go as far as season three. Looking back, that first year or two is more embarrassing than anything else (IMO).

I don’t remember the name of the episode I hate the most or what season it appears in, but it involves Riker dealing with males who are discriminated against on a planet where some weird matriarchy controls everything. A similar episode involves Riker falling in love (lust? infatuation? I don’t remember exactly) with a person who is neither quite male or female. In this latter episode the alien gets in some kind of trouble for violating this planet’s rules about gender and Riker and Worf go rescue him and/or her. Or something like that. Forgive me if I got some of those details wrong.

The video game episode also really stinks.

I don’t recall Dr. Crusher ever having orgasms all over the place. I’m not sure if I would like to see this or not.

"Justice"has tons of scantily-clad hot chicks and dudes. Disqualified.

I actually enjoyed “Dark Page” for reasons that escape me to this day.

I’m tempted to say that no such episode of Genesis was ever made but it does have… no, on second thought there was nothing good in it.

“Aquiel” was a Geordi episode. I don’t watch Geordi episodes. It was only possible to do a good Geordi episode once.

“Shades of Gray,” among its many other sins, failed to kill off Riker when there was an obvious opening. On the other hand it has the snake joke, which was funny.

Now that is simple madness. Family was wonderful as it showed consequences to trauma, not to mention getting rid of Troi in less than 10 minutes. And having her one scene ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE.
