I’m not talking about killing anyone. But how could it be “marginally more wrong” for me to take food and water from someone else? My family is hungry and thirsty and we’re desperate. I’m just doing what I have to do in order to survive.
Those poor people are in the position they are in because of the rampant and overt racism they face from white folks keeping them down.
To take the goods that they have removed by birthright of thier downtrodden status would be rubbing salt in an already open wound of fairness.

I don’t understand the debate. If the looted goods contribute to survival, then under the circumstances I can live with that. Anything else, they’re an asshat who if capped by a cop or a store owner I wouldn’t shed a tear over.

I certianly don’t believe that, but I think that such force has to do with protecting themselves rather than their DVD players.
Besides, I don’t think store owners are just going to automatically shoot people. I just think the weapon is brandished and then used only when necessary.

Any looter who takes advantage of the misery of others during a disaster as Katrina or a massive riot should be shot IMHO. All this bullshit about insurance and the goods would probably be destroyed anyway is no excuse to steal from anyone or any store.
Very few people are going to starve to death in a few days who have the strengh to wade through water, break windows and take what doesn’t belong to them. For purposes of discussion, I would eliminate food theft from the shooting. I have zero compassion for the jewelry, electronic, clothing thieves and they seem to have zero compassion for anyone else.
I think it is far too easy to assess behavior during this tragedy “good” or “bad.” People are desperate, confused, tired, frustrated, everything. There was an interview on CNN with one man who arrived at the Astrodome in Houston. The reporter asked him probing questions - “how did you feed your family,” etc. and it really seemed to trouble him, as if he had perhaps done something he would not have normally done to care for his family.
It’s easy for us who are dry, well-rested, hydrated, and who have internet connections to disparage and critique these people who are clearly at their wit’s end. I’m very uncomfortable with the idea that people are stealing for the sake of stealing. But the lawless and the criminal exist everywhere, in every economic, racial, and social strata. It’s far sexier to film people who apparently are on a robbing spree than it is to film people trying to get what they need to survive. One picture on CNN had a woman covering her face as she exited a store with diapers. I don’t think the majority of people who are in this situation are proud or pleased if they’ve had to steal. And of course I am curious as to how accurate the images of widespread looting are…
Well, in any event, I think these images (whether representative of whats going on or biased) will have a real impact on race relations in this country. Even if you can understand the motives of taking merchandise, you have to admit this is a very negative portrayal of black people.
Personally, I think its a sad commentary on consumerism and materialism that very poor people who are iexposed disease, toxic floodwaters, high heat, and a lack of electricity, gas, running water, and adequate medical care spend their energies to stockpile CDs, tennis shoes, and guns. If these people don’t get the fuck out, they will end up being the best dressed, heavily armed, and thoroughly entertained cholera victims we’ve ever seen.
People should not be shot for taking a DVD player , but if they block rescue efforts or threaten civilians - cap’em I say.
Most of us at one time or another have been desperate, confused, tired and frustrated…We did not steal and would not UNLESS our lives DEPENDED on it.

You put this perfectly. I’m appalled at some of the crap I see in this thread. Where the fuck do you motherfuckers get off criticizing these people (who are stranded in a destroyed city) for committing property crimes? How is it that you find their actions so offensive, when you’re not even being hurt by those actions? The ignorance and self-righteousness is just… sickening, much more so than watching some poor, desperate people steal soon-to-be-useless electronics. Get your fucking priorities straight.
And yes, I think there is some bias in the media. You’d have to be willfully blind not to notice. White people “find” food. Black people “loot”, even if it’s plastic bags from a grocery store and you have no idea what’s inside.
Because we are hurt by these actions. In the pocket. Think about those who have invested in insurance companies and are looking at drops in the share price or dividend. Think about the Names at Lloyds and elsewhere who are personally underwriting the insurance risks. Perhaps those who don’t recognise the looting as reprehensible would care to pay the insurance claims themselves?
How desperate are the cops caught on camera with stacks of new DVD’s?
They’ve had more than enough advance warning to lay in stocks of food, water, and other supplies. They’ve had training in emergency preparedness and disaster relief. What were they, out sick the day they were supposed to take those classes?
I’m trying to figure out what’s worse, their corruption, their stupidity, or the fact these pictures will be sent to every corner of the globe.
