WoT book 4 & 5 (Boxed Spoilers in OP only)

I’m in the middle of book 4 right now. Let’s put some periods so hovering on the thread doesn’t open the spoiler box… Two fairly simple questions, actually.

Anyway, I know that in Book 5 (major char spoiler, stay away from this thread if you’re haven’t read that book yet, please!):

Moiraine dies.

but

Does she die simply to have Lan “get the girl”? Or does her death have more significance than freeing Lan? I hope so. I think I’m looking more for a yes or no answer that, nothing more. Also, what chapter she dies in what be nice, so I know before I get there. I don’t need to know how she dies, however.

Also:

In book 4, I skipped the part where Perrin goes back to Two Rivers. Is Rand’s dad there? I actually can’t remember if he died in book 1. Can someone summarize quickly what happened in the part I skipped? I found the Rand thread more interesting at 2am, so I skipped to that. Bad me.

Thanks for your help.

If it’s in book 5, and you have only read up to book 4, how can you know what you say you know happens in book 5? Simpler to RAFO.

Rand’s dad is fine as of book 5. Go back and read what you skipped if you want to know what happened. RJ only becomes worthy of skipping whole plotlines by about book 8 or so. Well, maybe book 7.

Your information about what happens in book 5 is not entirely correct, but to the extent that it’s correct, it’s NOT just to let Lan get the girl, have no fear. And it happens almost at the end, although I don’t know the precise chapter.

And read the Perrin-goes-back chapters, they’re excellent.

Then read book 6.
Then read chapter summaries of books 7 through 10

Then read book 11.

Perrin back in the Two Rivers is, IMHO, one of the top two or three highlights of the entire series.

Would it be too much to ask for at least one explaination of the abbreviation? Maybe it’s the fact that I have a raging infection of everything above my neck which is keeping me from thinking straight but I have no idea what WoT means.

Wheel of Time, an interminable fantasy novel series, by Robert Jordan.

Gotcha. I bailed after chapter one, book one.

You are a wise man, Loach.

About Moiraine, I’ve known for years that she did, just not how or when. I found out when I was no longer actively reading the series. I’ve taken many breaks between book 1-2, and even read book 1 again before going to 2. Recently when I got to book 4, I told someone to google “Moiraine dies in book” and tell me the number they got, knowing that the phrase would give me book 7, book 9, etc. I only wanted to know what book at the time.

What is RAFO?

Thanks. I’ll read Perrin’s part tonight.

Don’t get too wedded to her being dead. I don’t think this is a spoiler when you actually read her ‘death’ scene you’ll see that there is no body nor do we KNOW she is dead. We just know Lan can’t feel her anymore and that his bond has passed.

I pretty much agree with Qadgop the Mercotan, though I recommend at least slogging through them anyway as there are a lot of hidden nuggets in all the dross. If you can’t bring yourself to read em at least go to your local library and get the unabridged books on tape (you can get everyone but book 8 for some reason, at least I couldn’t find 8 on tape in an unabridged format). Definitely read book 11.

Something to the effect of Read-on And Find Out

Yeah, Read and Find Out. It’s Jordan’s standard response when a fan asks him a question about something he hasn’t thought through yet.
