Would I like "Space: Above and Beyond"?

From what I’ve seen of it, it seems to combine the political intrigue of Babylon 5 and the militarism of Battlestar Galactica. Whether it’s good or not is another matter. I’d like to hear all y’all’s opinions on it before committing 24 or so hours of my life I’m not going to get back. Thoughts?

I enjoyed the eps I watched, and I’m a pretty big B5 fan. I don’t think that the series ever really concluded, though. Is the run out on DVD?

Think Starship Troopers, minus the giant bugs. Would you like that?

I liked it when I saw it during it’s run, but I was a teenager at the time, so I don’t know if I’d like it now.

It’s not quite as realistic as BSG since these Marines do everything, alternating between ground and space combat, and apparently suffered from the star trek cliche that (combat) landing parties must be comprised entirely of officers(though not command officers).

Way better than that. But not very good. It had a nice dark feel to it but the writing was spotty. Certain things always rang false with me when I watched, mostly because I have a military backgraound. One week these highly trained space pilots were having dogfights in space, the next they are being used as infantry. It didn’t make sense. There were other things I didn’t like but it’s been a while since I saw it. I still watched it every week so it couldn’t have been too bad. Good final episode if I recall. Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica (the new one) are both much better.

This is weird because I was just thinking of this show last night. A name was in the credits of Law and Order SVU and I thought it looked familiar. Just a few minutes in I saw that it was one of the guys from Space: Above and Beyond (Joel De la Fuente?). He was playing the computer expert hacking into some pedaphile’s computer.

The only reason you got this in first is because I had to get the door for my wife  .

Well, yeah, it pretty much did. IIRC from the final episodeAll the members of the unit are either killed or captured by the aliens in the big attack. We never find out which side wins, or if the war is over, but a new season would have needed a whole new cast.

Almost, one survived. I don’t remember the name but it was the white guy that didn’t have a nipple on his neck. IIRC it ended after all his friends are dead and he is in his bunk staring at the bottom of the top bunk. The war continues.

FWIW, I thought it was pretty good… I also liked Firefly (which is not that similar, but might appeal to a lot of the same people). The bit with the pancakes, the country music, and the black hole was memorable.

Time to check in with Netflix…

Statisticly speaking…no. You probably won’t like it.
It is very much like a blending of the worst of Battlestar Galactica and Starship Troopers.

Visually it has the same “not too distance future” look of either movie except instead of making you more connected to the story, it makes it look cheap.

There are a bunch of rambling and convoluted plotslines and themes that never go anywhere.

In fact, most of the plots are more or less a collection of war movie cliches - soldier trapped on a mine, ace pilot with a bad attitude, etc.

Oh yeah, now I remember, thanks. It does look likethe writers knew the show was going to be cancelled before the episode was shot, and decided to blow it all up on their way out. Nothing like the abandoned cliffhangers at the end of “Earth 2”, though.

For the final episode-

Didnt the series finale wrap up the major plotline of one of the characters- That being the fate of his girlfriend and some missing colonists. If I remember correctly the other characters die rescuing these colonists and trying to escape the alien hordes.

I remember liking the show as well… but I was also a teenager.

I think the guy who played the eyepatched Commandant on Malcom in the Middle played the XO on the show.

I didn’t bother looking it up but it seems that everyone in the show went on to do a bunch of nothing. The nipple-necked colonel is still a character actor that pops up on TV every now and then. I mentioned above that I saw one of them on L&O SVU the other day. Then again everyone gets a chance to be on L&0. I think they have me scheduled for next season.

Ok I did look it up.

Morgan Weisser: LT West, the lead character. Not much since then, a bunch of one-off TV roles and small movies.

Kristen Kloke: I remember her role in Final Destination. Nothing much since 01. Regular role in TV show Millenium.

Rodney Rowland: working steady but nothing spectacular. I’ve seen a lot of what is in his credits but I don’t remember him.

Lanei Chapman: I vaguely remember her in Rat Race. Minor roles on TV.

Joel de la Fuente: character on L&O as computer tech, dozen or so appearences, other small roles.

James Morrison, silver haired LTC Macqueen: long career in TV and movies including 11 episodes of 24. One of those guys you see and say “Oh it’s that guy.”

Notable guests: Tucker Smallwood: been in a ton of roles including one of the main bad guys in Enterprise.

R. Lee Ermy, Dale Dye, Richard Kind, Coolio, David Duchovney, Gail Ogrady all had guest roles.

Wasn’t he also in Starship Troopers?

…Kristen is married to Glenn Morgan, co-creator of SAAB with his frequent writing partner James Wong. It’s always fun to see a new Wong and Morgan project come up, because they often throw in a lot of “in-jokes”, and they often cast Kristen as well! So I don’t think that she is desperate for work, just family life is more important at the moment…

With regards the plot at the end…

There was a major human offensive on the go to take out a couple of planets, one of which included the aliens’ hatchery planet

I thought the show was standard saturday afternoon fare, even if they tried to make it more serious at the expense of entertainment.
