Would it speed up the message board to change the default # of days to show?

Would it speed up the message board to change the default # of days to show?

I seems like for the larger boards most people would settle for 5 days back, since just one day is a full page worth.
They can easily see more, but wouldn’t a lower default than 20 days help the board’s response time?

(Just guessing, as I have no idea what’s involved.:))

You can change it in your own profile.

You can set that yourself in your profile. It’s the “Default Thread View”. If you don’t like the 20 day default you can set yours to something else. You probably have “use forum default” selected. In retropsect 20 days is too high. Don’t think it puts a large delay on the board though. I can change it board wide or forum by forum if need be. I copied the default from the old UBB board. Probably 5 days is fine and will make that change if people in general think that is a good idea.

That would help me, but I’m talking about the throughput for everyone. When I do the math, the more unnecessary pages in the default, the more unnecessary delays for the whole system.

It might, but probably not a lot.

When you pull up a forum, it still has to search through the database for all postings within a specific period of time. I assume that it has to search the entire database.

I could be wrong though.

Well, FWIW, it’s my personal observation on my own computer that the forums load marginally faster with it set on 5 days than on 20 days. But that’s not saying much–like “being the tallest of the Seven Dwarves”.

I keep mine set on 10 days. Split the difference between speed (ha!) and missing something important.

I’ve set the default number of days to view to 5 for each forum. We’ll see what impact this has on speed. Please note it used to be 20 and now is only 5. Those of you who don’t like the new default can change you profile’s “Default Thread View” to something else.

Thanks jdavis. Hope it helps.
