Would most men look better with some makeup and eyeliner?

In looking at American Idol finalist Adam Lambert, his makeup seems to give him a almost cartoonish aspect. Plus, why does a 20 something man even *need *makeup? The eyeliner seems more appealing aesthetically, but the amount of work it must take to be applied properly is probably formidable.

Would most guys look better with a little makeup?

He’s got too much of it on for my taste but in general I’ve gotta say many guys look better with a tad.

Everyone looks better with make up. The problem is how much and how it’s applied. Even on women I think make up should be utilitarian. Just cover up the blemishes and any minor spots and then accept whatever left over

What he said. I think most guys look better with some makeup, at least some powder and eyeliner.

I think Adam uses too much for two reasons: bad skin and he’s a performer.

I do think most guys would look better with eyeliner at least.

If you can see a man is wearing makeup and he is not a professional circus clown, it is too much makeup.

A man would look better if he had make up of you are one of those girls who like men who look like women.

A famous make-up artist wrote, on the subject of make-up for men, “Think of face powder as an anti-perspirant, and of concealer as five more hours of sleep”.

That guy in the OP’s link looks absolutely HIDEOUS.

“Cartoonish” is far too generous. He looks like a woman dressed up as a man dressed up as a woman, in drag. The makeup makes his skin look greasy, oily, slick, pitted and aged. The eyeliner makes him look like a pathetic 14 year old emo-wanker. His shirt and tie is also hideous.

Everything about that guy is disgusting.

Fox, from Daisy Of Love (shut up :D) has been seen on the show applying makeup. He uses mascara on the facial hair and a little powder and eye enhancement.

He’s not my type, but I can objectively see that he looks good. So I guess it can make men look better if it’s done skillfully.

I don’t think it makes them look better, I think it makes them look more feminine. I know some people are into that, but I’m not. Give me a manly man and skip the mascara, please.

I agree. And look at the train wreck guys are making of their eyebrows.

Let’s hope this doesn’t catch on. If common dudes start wearing makeup, it’s going to look pretty weird. Imagine going into a truck stop and seeing all those burly truck drivers with rebel flag shirts, eyeliner and face powder.

I think the incidence of men who would look better with makeup is about the same as women who would look better with it. Guys are just as prone to uneven skin tone, undereye circles, and blemishes as gals, fercrissake. We just have a social construct that says it’s okay for guys to go around looking like that, whereas a woman who looks like is slovenly, doesn’t take care of herself, and doesn’t take any pride in her appearance.

Why would it be any more formidable than for the women who do it everyday? It doesnt take very long to put on eyeliner once you get the hang of it. Of course, if you are going on stage and doing TV shows, it takes much longer than it would for an everyday person, but certainly no long than for any of the female contestants. Probably quite a bit less. I think boys in eyeliner are hot, generally. Im not quite sure if Adam Lambert has the face to pull it off, but good for him for going for a slightly different stereotype than the usual American Idol… I guess the success of all those shitty emo bands is changing America after all. Who knew Fall Out Boy would leach its way down to American Idol?

Actually, the first thing I noticed about Adam Lambert is that his hair cut looks like a fashionable Japanese boy`s but I think they both just take inspiration from the same place that shitty emo bands do–glam rock. Nothing new to see here, really.

Oh Hell, why stop at eyeliner and a little powder? You might as well use some lip gloss and rouge, too. Fuck it, why not add a beauty spot?

When I want to look particularly good I wear concealer under my eyes. I have very dark under eye circles and it makes me look tired and worn out and literally years older than I am. The concealer makes me look much younger than usual and much more vibrant.

For what it’s worth I’m extremely discerning in occasions where I’ll bother with it. Most of the time it’s because I’ve been invited to speak to some group of people or to sit on a panel, and I want to look nice in front of a bunch of people who are looking at me. I realize I may not exactly be riveting and most people probably don’t care what I say much less what I look like, but I make a distinction between speaking to 100 people who are ostensibly paying attention and just attending a seminar with 100 people.

I guess I would too for a wedding or another social event where I expected to be in photos, but I haven’t been to any weddings lately. I never bother on dates, even though I want to look my best then. That would seem bizarre.

The big criteria are Will there be pictures? and Are there numerous strangers in a position to judge me?

Anyway, I can personally attest to looking resoundingly better with a bit of concealer, but I hope its use remains very limited.

Every guy I know who’s regularly on television wears this. Honestly, I think a lot of teenage boys would be better off using some acne-fighting concealer.

These are the kind of guys who wear makeup.

What aboutthese guys? They do quite well.

But I’ll admit – it takes guts and a certain air to pull off, whereas any woman can get away with it (though she may come off looking a bit goth, depending on application). It’s a bit silly.
