My dad fit into the “Old School” republican meme for many years while in the military yet now in his aging day has changed to somewhat of an independent - he still mainly votes R.
The other day he was talking about Michelle Bachman and those “tea party nut-jobs” as people he would never support or vote for. I’m wondering if any SDMB dopers would actually vote for Michelle either? Or do any dopers think that long standing repubs would vote for someone the tea party puts up? When it comes down to it, I don’t think they would.
I know some in both camps. My Grandfather is a life-long GOP member and will vote for whoever the GOP puts up. My BiL is a staunch conservative who had a hard time voting for McCain because of Palin, and certainly won’t vote for Bachmann. My father is also conservative, and actually seems to hate Romney the most, even though my father is, in general, the most moderate of the three. I don’t think he would be able to vote for Bachmann though, but his wife almost certainly would.
I don’t think my parents would. They’ve voted pretty solidly R their whole lives, with a couple of exceptions in local races, but they’ve also both been happy to inform me that they sure didn’t vote for Sam Brownback for governor of KS.
If he’s too much for them to stomach, I can’t see them voting for Bachmann.
Sidetrack, I know, sorry, but I wonder how some reconcile continuously voting for people, the sole reason for which is they say they won’t raise their taxes, after their taxes are raised by those same people time and time again.
To answer the OP, Republicans will rally 'round and vote for the last Republican standing, no matter who he or she is. Republicans falling in line is more than just a meme.
I wouldn’t. She is like Robert Taft IMO-neo-isolationist and so principled that she will never compromise. Which is admirable but in the end Presidents need to be bipartisan and in some aspects post-partisan.
My parents, being the old school and long standards on the GOP side, wouldn’t vote for her. They love Romney, also looking at Pawlenty! (ERRRK!!)
Yes, they’re octogenarians, so who could blame them?
Seriously, they think BitchyBachieBoo is off her rocker like most. My parents don’t care about gays getting married, and they certainly DO NOT think it is the biggest USA issue for the next election. They basically think Barack is a fish out of water and does not have the support he needs, nor the direction to lead a country. (this seems hard to argue against very recently…)
Yet, they REALLY don’t want Obama back. Not a chance. They’re voting GOP no matter what. Whatever the nominee. Still, for future risk of the party, and especially after the Palin fiasco, I really, REALLY do not see Bachmann as a candidate for any party-- unless they start an I-Failed-High-School-History-And-Founded-a-Jesus party.
As for me, well, most of you have seen me rant in another multi-page Bachmann thread on this election board. To sum it up, I feel she’s a jealous little bitch who never got over the remarriage of her parental figures, feeling serious demise upon her 9 step-siblings, found Jesus (like many life time Max Security murderers) and married a flame who’s about to play shoe-tapping in a Minnesota bathroom stall. This represents me? This mess? My parents don’t think so either. But you never know.
No, I’m not a Repub, neither am I a democrat. I think both parties are assholes, but like most of us, I’m dying to see the campaign show. However, I’ll be reading a lot of books to avoid the bullshit campaign ads-- especially ones from Bachmann who want a fictional Jesus as their running mate.
My FIL is an old-school ex-military Republican type. He became very disillusioned with the GOP during the Bush years after seeing what a mess the administration made of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I believe he voted for Kerry; I’m not sure whether he went for Obama or McCain though. I can’t see him liking Bachmann at all, although he’d probably go for Romney.
Raises an interesting question I wish had gone in that thread at the time - if Qin was born in the U.S. to parents who were not themselves citizens, is he a citizen, and if so, would he be so kind as to pipe up during any future “anchor baby” thread and challenge the more doofussy claims therein?
I admit I haven’t kept track of Qin’s autobiographical details, so if he was not born in the U.S. and does not hold American citizenship, never mind.
Michele Bachmann claims to be submissive to her husband. Since she is to be submissive to her husband, shouldn’t he be running? He would be in charge anyway.
Marcus allowed her to go to college. Then god spoke through her husband to get her to become a tax lawyer.
These people are way to crazy to take seriously.
I know my Dad won’t vote for Bachmann. He’s pretty moderate and considered McCain before Palin was in the picture, but he hates Bachmann already. I don’t know if he’ll vote for Romney, either, but it’s more likely, especially if Romney campaigns on pulling out of Iraq.
