I think I’m more hoping for them to end up like the Germans after WW2: deeply apologetic for decades to come, with their leaders tried and executed for various crimes against humanity.
Climate change denial, the institutionalized slavery and murder of black people, fostering an American Nazi movement, willfully and fraudulently treating COVID like it’s nothing and killing nearly 200k, kids in cages, attacking Afghanistan and Iraq, arms sales to violent and repressive regimes… draw the lines as you please, but they ain’t no saints. And if Democrats are similarly guilty, and they should be tried as well.
There needs to be an honest-to-goodness opposition party to hold Democrats accountable. The current GOP is so rotten in its timbers that it might need a total takedown and rebuild, but such a party must exist. Otherwise Democrats are perfectly capable of corruption, letting power go to their head, majority trampling over a minority, etc. if they are in a state of unchecked one-party rule, just like any other party of any other nation. It’s human nature; unchecked power is a recipe for corruption.
The Republicans need a dozen or so cancerous tumors surgically removed; they need to become a party that takes pandemics seriously, global warming seriously, stops letting people own guns just because the Constitution says they can, raises taxes on the rich, actually balances the budget, holds people like Trump accountable for lying or corruption, does something meaningful about ripoff healthcare costs, learns to make more persuasive arguments for their side, and stops following the Constitution like it’s a divine or supreme legal document.
I agree with your concerns about one party rule, and the dissolution of the republican party does worry me specifically because of that.
OTOH, I probably have more in agreement with moderate republicans than I have with AOC. If republicans could agree to the list that you have here, then I could get on board for the most part.
I do think that if the republican party implodes, then it will not take long for the democrats to factionalize and split, with some realignments here and there.
Republicans clearly are far more interested in party than country these days. That’s demonstrated by their lack of compromise to help the country, and their lack of concern at Trump trying to destroy the USPS in order to get reelected.
Destroying democratic structures to stay in power is what Communists and Nazis did.
I used to be a Republican. I jumped ship in 2000 and I’m really glad I did.
No, the world would be off without demorats (true commies, socialist and fascists). I would suggest burning a few more buildings, shutting down a few more states, crying racist a few more times and see how that works for you.
We’ll probably soon both get our wishes. Dead blues, dead reds, everyone screaming and shooting, Putin laughing, Jinping quietly scheming. Maybe the world would just be better off without all of us anyway.
Tiki torch clusterfucks are random spontaneous events which have no antecedent planning or follow up? Then who the fuck were they? Goldfish? Fruitflys?
I get that you want to place distance between the R party and nazism.
What makes you think that tiki torch protesters were not organized by the same right wing that supported Trump in 2016, and support the New Trump Republican Party for 2020?
