Would you be on board with the new Overlord?

The “Entity” is an enigmatic life form. Having existed for thousands of years it is a nomad traveler of space. Made of pure energy, it doesn’t need a space ship for it’s travels. It is able to travel from planet to planet or what ever spacial body it wants through his own inherent propulsion system.

His source of “refueling” (for lack of a better word) is gravity. In order to recharge, the entity lands itself on a planetary body and recharges itself. The one drawback to this form of nourishment is that it’s very inefficient.

Once the entity lands on a planet, he is stuck there for close to a thousand years until his form has fully recharged.

As mysterious as this life form is, it shares at least one thing in common with us. It seeks companionship. When ever the entity has to recharge, it tries to find a planet with intelligent lifeforms on it. Another neat trick this life form can do is take on the physical identity of pretty much anything it encounters.

Sadly, the entity doesn’t always find planets with intelligent lifeforms on it. And is often forced to land on baron planets for thousands of years in solitude until he is recharged.

However, on those happy occasions when he does find a planet with life on it; he assumes their form and lives amongst them. Usually with some degree of anonymity.

The entity was filled with joy when he found Earth. It’s filled with all sorts of life. Knowing he needed to recharge, he descends to Earth with out hesitation.

Once there, he soon realizes that this planet is doomed. With the political environment being what it is, he knows it’s doomed, as he’s seen this happen a thousand times before.

Determind not to live the next thousand years of his life in some post apocalyptic waste land, the entity decides to take matters into his own hands. With what seems like to us mere humans as god like powers, he tells the political powers of the world: “Stop your wars and violence or anything else of malice or die.”

He tells the rest of the people of the world that they are able to enjoy any freedom they want. As long as those freedoms don’t include hurting another human being.

Knowing that the people of Earth probably aren’t going to be cool with a One World Supreme leader, no matter how benevolent his intentions may be, he offers the people of the world a gift. For their cooperation and obedience, he will show them how they can feed clothe and shelter everyone on the planet.

This gift wont be handed to them on a silver platter. It will require work from the people. If the people decide to revolt against the entity, this gift will never be achieved.

My question to you is:

Are you on board?
Do you trust him?
Is he the Antichrist?
Is this a happy day for you?

Poll to follow…

I, for one, welcome our new enigmatic overlord.

I’ll be looking to kill it. Really not down with the whole Overlord thing, unless I get to be Overlord.

How do I know I can trust him/her/it?

We can already feed, clothe and shelter everyone on the planet. But we don’t. I don’t see how we are going to do any better now. Someone will fuck it up, and someone else will try to stop them from fucking it up, and then we will be at war trying to prevent war.

This mysterious overlord should know better by now.

Regards,
Shodan

I never respected Superman, either, and for pretty much the reasons Shodan gives. Superman could end war, end poverty, end crime, provide water to the desert, lift solar energy satellites to orbit, etc. So, instead, what does he do? Gets in big macho fist-fights with Lex Luthor’s latest powered-armor suit. This is a superman? This is a high school football player who overdosed on steroids!

If the Overlord really wants to help us, he can fund basic scientific research, so that, sooner rather than later, we can learn how to solve our own problems.

To the OP

Can this supreme being detect (hostile/greedy/horribly selfish) intent and promptly intervene in a way to stop it and or punish the offender? Leader orders the invasion of a neighboring nation, “POOF!” teleported to contemplate life on the moon without a spacesuit for 5 seconds before being teleported back. Each time you need another lesson, session on moon extended by 5 seconds.

In my opinion such an overlord would be short lived if it was subject to worldly weaponry. In any case, it probably would not matter what I thought about the matter. I’d be going along to get along. Would we have a world vote or country by country vote? Nobody is empowered to act for the earth world. There are always dissenters. The new guy will need to show us more then just saying he will take care of hunger. Political reasons prevent that now and they still would after downloading the alien’s software package. Upsetting the balance of power would generate war and pestilence. Maybe this overlord should be encouraged to hang out at McDonalds after school for socialization before heading back to his home at gravity central or a nearby black hole.
Now if he were eligible to run for president, maybe the Republicans would have something to talk about.

Yeah, probably should have explained that in the OP. Basically, the way it works is, in this brave new world of ours, if I point a loaded gun at you and pull the trigger; nothing would actually happen to you. I’d pull the trigger, you’d be fine and I’d be dead.

Propaganda or protest against the “supreme leader” would be fine. As long as it didn’t include violence. Also, this entity is impervious to any sort of modern weaponry.

So any violent “energy” for lack of a better term would be reflected to the one who initiated it.

What happens if I try to steal something? If the police try to arrest me for some non violent charge and I refuse to comply will the taser zap them or me?

Given how badly humans have fucked things up already, I’m all for going in a different direction if it means I get to live. I’ll just keep my dreams of bashing people’s heads in with a shovel to myself.

Neat idea.

Sounds a bit like the TV series V. Spoiler: The aliens seemed nice but were bad.

Sounds good to me, as long as this isn’t a trick scenario where it ends up being a dystopia. I’ve always thought the ideal form of government would be a dictatorship - with a perfect dictator. If your alien fits that description, I’m on board. Now, how’s he/she/it going to handle climate change?

I voted other. I want to know more. I want to get more information about these other worlds, and about these solutions. I want argument, and evidence. I’m willing to know more but I’m not willing to just jump on board on say-so. Why are we doomed? What happens? Can it be avoided without 100% acceptance from humanity, which is clearly impossible? Feed, clothe, and shelter is also a pretty low standard of life for 1,000 years – what about technology and science moving forward? Do we have to sacrifice this? As has been said, we have enough to do this now – but we don’t. Will we all be forced to resort to subsistence farming and animal husbandry to survive, with no people free for other pursuits? If so, I think we’re better off on our current course.

If the Overlord is intelligent, surely he/she/it wouldn’t expect us to accept all this on blind faith alone. Anyone who would do so surely has bad motives.

I’m an atheist for the same reason I’m an American: I bow to no tyrant.

We can solve our own problems or kill ourselves trying.

Are you kiddding ? This is the opportunity of a lifetime ! All together now: WOLVERINES !

I’d be on board. The entity has solved violent crime, hunger, and basic poverty. The former gives the latter breathing space to take effect in our collective nature as several generations grow up under the care of the entity. It should not take long before the humans realize that working together is more profitable to the species than killing one another.

I’m on board simply for the removal of evil. I didn’t need the gift. The only reason I don’t want a dictator is that his and my values may not align. And I have no reason for any ill will if everyone else also cannot express any, and I feel most people will go realize that as well.

I would, however, like a free trial of his restrictions, just to make sure it works okay. We’ll definitely need time to adapt.
