(Disclaimer; I am NOT advocating the assination of the President nor am I ploting it or aiding someone who is.)
If George W. Bush suddenly died (of natural cause or assination) would you care? Would you feel sad? Does it make any difference if he was assinated?
While I thing murder is wrong (like most people) and I have to desire to see him dead I wouldn’t mourn his passing. I would feel sad, but only because Cheney would be our new President. If he was killed in a terror attack that killed innocent bystanders that would be sad.
Nope, I wouldn’t even slightly sorry; I’d be moderately pleased, and anxious because I just know he’d probably be turned into some sort of martyr, even if he slipped on a banana peel and broke his neck. Plus, Cheney would openly be in charge.
[hijack] What I’d really like to happen is for him to just publically snap, like responding to some reporter’s question by pulling a pistol and trying to shoot him. Then being wrestled to the ground by his own Secret Service detail, screaming “How dare you question me ? ! I’m God’s president, you hear me ? ! God’s !” [/hijack]
I doubt I’d take much pleasure if he died of an accident, because it’s not as though Cheney is any better than he is. I’d be very angry if he was assassinated. A single individual or small conspiracy does not have the moral right to undermine the will of the electorate. We live in a Democracy, not some tin-pot banana republic.
I don’t know him and don’t like what I do know about him, but that doesn’t mean his death would be a neutral (or positive) event. Bush has loved ones too, and for their sake I’d find the event sad.
Besides, do you really think his death would make anything better, or even not worse? If he were assassinated (by the way, alphaboi867, much like in The Wayans Bros., there are two asses in “assassination”), he’d be martyred. If he died some other way, there’d still be a bunch of bullshit about honouring his memory and supporting his legacy and yadda-yadda-yadda, as if the fact that policies were enacted by a dead man somehow legitimizes them.
The worst possible thing that could happen to America right now would be for Bush to be assassinated. Whatever small progress we’ve made, as a nation, away from the hysteria and over-reactions spawned by 9/11 would snap back like a window shade. It’d be another excuse for the neo-cons to clamp down even further on our liberties in the name of national security. If he died accidentally? I wouldn’t shed any tears, but it’s far too late for that to change anything. If that pretzel had taken him out a few years back, the country would probably be in better shape today, but at this point, the best thing we can do is hunker down and weather the last few years of his presidency.
Would I care? Certainly I would care. It would have a direct impact on me after all. I’d be a fucking fool if I DIDN’T care if the president of my country was killed or died of natural causes.
Would I be sad or upset? Depends on HOW he died I guess. If he just had a heart attack or something I probably wouldn’t be too sad or upset. I’d be a bit anxious about Chaney taking over, but only a bit…unlike some I don’t think the president is either king or god, and can only do so much…and only with the backing of the other parts of the government. A backing that seems to be increasingly slipping away.
If he were assassinated though, especially by a foreign power (say a terrorist or someone from Iran or North Korea…or maybe Venezuela ) then I’d be quite upset…in fact, I’d be pissed as hell. I don’t give a shit for the man, but he IS our president, and its the office thats important…not the man. Assassinating our president would be a direct attack on the US…and again, as a citizen I’d be a fucking fool NOT to be upset by that turn of events.
The thing here that really gives me a further insight into you (as if I needed more :)) is that you didn’t put in a smiley…as if you really believe such a thing within the realm of possibility. I could understand having a free form fantasy about such an event…but only if one understood that it WAS pure fantasy and wishful thinking. Maybe you really see it that way…but from my past reading of your thought process I’d have to say you really believe something like this possible. Thats a bit disturbing in and of itself…
Y’know, every time I see him at a press conference lately, he seems to be closer to frothing at the mouth and shouting. It’s only a matter of time, methinks.
I don’t want him to die. In the short term, I don’t want Cheney in office. In the long term, I want Bush to live forty years after leaving office so that like Hoover, Johnson, and Nixon, he has plenty of time to see how history will remember him.
Thirding the position that I would be sort of mildly saddened for his family if he died of natural caused, but would be very upset if he were assassinated. The assassination of an American President is a direct attack on an important American institution and a direct attempt to destablilize the American government.
I have too much respect for the office of the presidency to every be okay with an assassination of the holder.
Add me to the list of people who would find it appallng (and also politically counterproductive to those of us who find his activities as president appalling) if he were to be assassinated, and would not wish an early natural death on him, but would not mind if he capped his illustrious career with a meltdown of stunning proportions. Preferably on video so it can get replayed over and over again.
Well, as I’ve often said, I’m all for a lengthy, humiliating war crimes trial at the Hague for our curent President. Followed by the appropriate remedy once his guilt is determined.
I can’t imagine not caring, nor being happy about such an event.
Assassination of the president would be a tragic and traumatic event for the entire country. I feel this way even about an administration I despise and regard as criminal. It wouldn’t do anybody the least good, and could cause some very substantial harm to things I care about long-term.
