Would you consider a Birdhouse a good Holiday present?

I usually try and get creative when it comes to the holidays and I really enjoy making things in my little wood shop. This year I am thinking about making Birdhouses and giving them as gifts. Not your regular old pine boxes but really cool, elaborate birdhouses…

Would you think this is a good gift?

Yes!

Email me – I’ll be happy to send you my IRL address.

My cats would love for me to have a birdhouse!

I think it would be charming (feel free to send me one :D). But it depends entierly of the recipient. Do they have a yard for it? Do they like birds? I have a bird feeder outside my window because I like to watch the birds come and go. But not everyone would care.

Three responses and three requests you send us one. What a greedy bunch we are   :D.

Well yes everyone has a yard, and I do think all those who would get one would like to see a bird family move in. Being winter, most likely the chickadees will be inhabiting them, but come spring, the blue birds and wrens should be around… If I make enough maybe I’ll donate some to worthy dopers

I’ll be a no vote, although it isn’t because a birdhouse is a bad holiday present. It’s called we already have two decorative bird houses, a ladybug house and a butterfly house sitting on top of our shelves. One that wasn’t quite so decorative and appeared more like it was intended for use might actually make it out to the yard.

YMMV- but our collection has come from other people–not from us buying any birdhouses.

One thing to think about is that different birds like different configurations and different-sized entry holes. Depending on where your recipients are, you may find out that you’ve made a nice house for sparrows, which many people would just as soon be rid of. I think the Audubon Society has some nice guidelines for birdhouses.

I was going to say no, because not everyone wants poop everywhere, but - a homemade birdhouse? Very nice.

Personally, I would. We have two feeders, but no houses.

Try to feel out the bird. Find out how happy he is in his present home. Is he renting now? Does he have problems with the squirrels in the neighborhood?

I think it would be cool to have a birdhouse that didn’t look like a house… like maybe a bird convenience store, or a bird hair salon.

I’d love it myself. But I already have feeders (and a bird house that is starting to look like an avian crackhouse it’s so old), so I’m one of those “bird peepers” that would find it a perfectly lovely gift - all the better as it’s made by you.

“bah. Feed the birds, and what do you get? Fat birds.”

I think this is a great idea. For those poopy types who wouldn’t want birdhouses, tell them they’re pencil holders.

I have a birdhouse IN my house. I just like how they look. Nice gift!

Yes, I think that is a great present for most people. My parents have given them (bought not made) to some relatives that are difficult to buy for. I would like one myself as long as you are offering. I would also like 10 bat houses or so.

Thanks in Advance

A birdhouse is a wonderful idea! Yes! I can’t imagine anyone NOT being quite happy with a birdhouse…especially one that you made yourself!

My husband gave me a selection of bat houses for my birthday…I was THRILLED! I love bats and I want to give them a safe place to live and reproduce, and that was the perfect gift for me!

He put them all up, and I’ve spent MANY a wonderful evening watching the bats, while relaxing outside in the summer.

So, yes. A birdhouse would be a fantastic gift!

As long as the intended recipient isn’t a bird hater, I think it’s a lovely gift.

I actually know a woman who’s PETRIFIED of birds - maybe not so good for her.

Oh, and let me chime in and say if you find you have an extra, I’d be happy to take it off your hands.

Making feeders and giving them is nice also. In the winter the bird feeders are put to use right a way. One thing that we have from my dad is enough bird houses to last another 10 to 20 years, and I give some to older persons that don’t have much income. Painted or stained bird houses are not occupied by birds until the fumes completely disapate.

I think it is an awesome & thoughtful gift!
