Talk about mundane, but…
I just went to the grocery and bought some chipotle hummus. I get home and open it, and on top are places that have hardened and turned dark brown. I try to find a sell-by date, but there is none. Shouldn’t there be a sell-by date? It’s home is the refrigerated section, so obviously it can go bad.
Now I don’t want it, as I’m somewhat grossed out by the hard places. It’s obviously old, and I have a thing about old food. Would you eat it?
No, but that’s because I don’t like hummus.
It’s garbanzo beans, isn’t it? Can garbanzo beans go bad?
I’d take it back the next time you’re planning to hit the supermarket. I know our local supermarkets will accept all sorts of things back just because the customer doesn’t like the look of them.
(Don’t let your mayonaise freeze if you have your fridge at ridiculously cold temperatures. Truuuuust me on this.)
You can make your own that’s better.
Chick peas, garlic, olive and sesame seed oil.
Peppers if you are brave.
Yum.
P.S.
Sorry, concerning the OP:
No.
Sesame oil? You having trouble finding tahini?
I’ve always made mine in the blender (sorry, no food processor) with chick peas, lemon juice, olive oil, water, garlic, and a little kosher salt, white pepper, red pepper flakes, and onion flakes.
Are there any other vegetarians out there who don’t like hummus? I feel like such an isolate. I just don’t like the taste of tahini.
No, it tastes the same to me and is less messy and expensive. I don’t make hummus all that often and don’t use a whole can of tahini when I do.
Are you certain that the brown clumps aren’t just clumped-up chipotle powder?
I like hummus, and chipotle sounds really good. But I wouldn’t eat it like that. Chickpeas/hummus can go bad…trust me on this.
It was getting late, I didn’t feel like going back to the store, and I didn’t have anything else in the house that I didn’t have to cook and I was not cooking.
So I took the hard brown places off, and I ate some. (Of the rest, not the hard brown places.)
And it was good. Mmmmm. Quite spicy, too.
Then I realized that I actually have everything to make hummus from scratch.
:smack:
Canned tahini? That would explain it–I buy tahini in 1 pound jars.
So what is it, chick peas or garbanzo beans?
Depends upon from whom, for who and why you buy it.
Lamest. Reality show. Ever.
Heh, I can just picture a studio audience shouting out at the beginning of the show: “Would! You! Eat! This! HUMMUS!!!” (cue cheesy 90s theme music)
