My family is about one-quarter Scot, but we’ve no identifiable tartan. But, my sisters went to Scotland and came back with a scarf for me in the Stewart Black tartan, since they knew some of the clan and were invited to wear that tartan instead. Which makes it cool that I found, on the linked site, this.
I’ve always wanted to wear a kilt, just because they look so comfortable. Let’s be honest, skirts on women make much less sense than kilts on me.
I don’t know if I could wear a kilt justto go out for a night. Still, I’ve taken up curling, and I’d like to get a Sportkilt for special occasions like parties and bonspiels. If a bunch of us went out after the game, I’d wear my kilt to the bar or wherever. It’s it’s something unrelated to a curling event, probably not.
Yep, my mother helped me make one for a party one year. It was comfortable so I wore it on the weekends. Every Saturday I would wear it. Mall, resturaunt, bank, wherever I had to go. People find them interesting so expect to be stopped and asked questions. Planning on having a “real” one made with our tartan once I finish with my weight loss.
Thanks to this thread, I’m going to try my damnedist to find a kilt. I’m skinny, not too tall, with bird legs, and about a quarter French and I think some what Scottish or Irism somewhere. It won’t be pretty, but that has never stopped me before.
Heh, I just flipped on the tube and on BBC-America is “Dressing Dangerously.” Now I’m thinking about ordering from Sport Kilts, since they’re in my price point.
I have a real kilt (family colors) and a Hot Topic knockoff of a utilikilt. They’re both tremendously fun to wear, and the fake utilikilt has an amazing amount of pocket space. A real one is definitely on my list of things to save up for.
Of course, I’m a girl so it’s not nearly as remarkable.
And kilts are worn fairly regularly - a man dressed in a kilt, rugby shirt and boots/wellies is pretty common. The full regalia is normally only for formal events (wedding/ceilidh/that bloody piper on Princes Street etc).
Be aware that a lot of so-called ‘Scottish’ history is a load of old rubbish, created to entertain royalty and nobility (and these days tourists). Over-romantisised gubbins that makes a real Scot cringe!
I think therefore it’s all-inclusive, regardless of colour or creed! You don’t need 1/8th or a 1/4 heritage to join in - just a Scots attitude, a pint of heavy and (please, please do this) nice clean underwear!
Drambuie on ice is perfectly acceptable. (Not too much ice though) As long as it’s a pint. he he he
If you like that kind of flavour I also recommend Isle of Jura whisky. Its a light smooth mellow Highland Dram, and goes down a treat. oh oh - I nearly forgot - try the Hebridean whisky liqueur too… caramel, spices, whisky… or Loch Fyne…oranges…chocolate…spices… or of course Glayva… Edradour if you like a cream liqueur, oh and Athol Brose.
drool
Good grief - Its half past ten (am) and I quite fancy a whisky now! Uh-oh!
I’ve just found out that they have a ‘snap’ (a gusset!!) BWAHAHAHAAAA! Now there’s a nice mental image for a Monday morning…
These utilikilts aren’t really very Scottish at all - (a gusset!! giggle) so I think you can go ahead and enjoy the whistle of the wind round your… er… ankles!
Several of the guys I hang out with when I go to gaming conventions have Utilikilts (black ones), which they wear with big stompy combat boots and black T-shirts or tank tops. Most of them also have hair in nonstandard colors (blue, green, pink, or shaved) and assorted tattoos and piercings. I think that look works great, and there’s nothing “sissy” or “girly” about it. I think that other than Scottish plaids, the punk-industrial look works best with kiltage.
Me, I’ve got two Utilikilts (one black, one urban camo) and I like them, but I usually only wear them at cons. It’s funny, but despite the fact that I don’t own any regular girl-type skirts and usually dress in a rather masculine style, I always feel vaguely weird wearing a kilt–men’s pants are fine, but men’s kilts make me feel like I’m wearing the wrong thing.
I used to occasionally wear skirts back in college, but haven’t dared in years what with my increased girth, lol! But I see these Utilikilts have a beer gut cut, that’s awesome!
I would totally wear one of these out in public, they look great! I will be ordering the black denim one. Thanks for the link!
http://www.macrae.org/tartans.htm I rather like my family tartans, I think I just might have to get kilted. The ancient MacRae or the Prince’s Own are my favorites though.
