Wouldn't it be brilliant if...

…We could post binaries into the sdmb!

I know there are rules about descriptive thread titles (not sure if that applies to all board ‘rooms’ though) and this has probably been discussed before but - having a descriptive title would ruin the suspense (if there was any) and expressing an opinion that has been discussed before is why I am human.

We could share photos we took,…

erm…
er…
…(I’m afraid my list of decent law abiding things to do with the ability to post binaries seems to end there)

We can share photos - just post a link to it. There were problems when people could post images here. I remember a “Post your Desktop!” thread in particular.

And also there was the problem of people posting copyrighted photos here without permission.

Boscibo - I mean without having to post links. I know all about links. What if someone’s webspace is full? What if they don’t have webspace? What if the picture in question is relevant to a post/thread but not relevant (or worthwhile) for the webspace/site that person owns.

It would be sooooo convenient to be able to post a picture and then talk about it without having to put it on your website.

P.S, When I had the OP in mind - I also had “I know it will never happen” in mind for inclusion - but I forgot to include it. I knew that reasons for it never happening had probably been discussed before - which is why I had “I know it will never happen” in mind.

Curse my limited human brain!

For instance - I have a picture which (if I judged it to be woth talking about) I would post along the lines of…

… “Why did my camera make this scene yellow (the ideal colour for a sunset) which looks so much better than the real scene that my eyes saw?”…

Now, as luck would have it - I had already put this picture on my website. but chances are slim that someone’s website will be about what they are posting about. So they would want to include the picture as a binary somehow.
Also - I have 600MB (ish) of pictures I took. And only 5MB of webspace. It is unlikely that I will want to post about the less than 1 percent of picturage I own that is on my website.

  1. The large size of your picture is part of the reason why folks don’t want them inline.

  2. There is no reason why you can’t upload photos to your website even if they are not what your website is about - I don’t get that part of your reasoning. Not evey picture has to be linked to the rest of your site.

  3. I don’t know why your picture is yellow, I like it though. Maybe adjust the setting on your camera, or fix it with Photoshop.

  4. Why not start an album at Webshots or one of the other web album places? I think there are still free ones, and then you can post a link so others can see them.

  1. The large size of my pictue is irrelevant to the point of the OP (it is large because the majority of people are prepared to wait for a picture that may possibly be good enough to use as a desktop image).

  2. You forgot about the, a) posssibility that the website is full and, b) the convenience of posting a binary to the sdmb over uploading a pictue to your website for the sake of one sdmb post.

  3. Why would I want to fix it? It is perfect. I just wondered why my camera (fuji finepix s602zoom) made it the ideal colour - yellow. It is, afterall, a dumb [expensive] machine.

4, I will investigate the possibility of starting an album at webshots. how much space do you get/what is the cost?

I’m sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you had a problem with the color of your picture - I agree that it is nice the way it is.

A long time ago (like when I first joined the SDMB) posting photos was allowed. It was nice, but some folks abused it by posting photos too large, (not everyone has a high speed connection), posting photos that were owned by someone else, or posting photos of questionable content. So the powers that be said no more photos on the SDMB.

I often post photos links here on the SDMB (for example - when I got my new kitten I posted links to her picture more than once) and uploading it to my ftp space really isn’t inconvenient. I am lucky in the fact that my ISP gives me 60 MBs of web space, I know not all ISPs offer that much, but some offer even more. When my space gets full, I clear out older stuff that I’m bored with.

A link really isn’t that big of a roadblock - if people really want to see, they will follow a link.

As far as I know, Webshots is free. I don’t use it so I am not sure how much space you get. I know some people who have numerous albums on there - when one album gets too full they start another.
