It was between that and Assassin’s Creed the other day at EB, but my wife did some work on some promo material for Assassin’s Creed so we had to buy that one instead. Is Call of Duty 4 really good? It looks awesome.
I love my Xbox 360, and the OP illustrates why I only play sports games on it, like Forza 2 and NHL 2k8 (and Star Wars Lego w. my son, and Carcassonne w. my wife, and the occasional Worms of course.) FPS and those kind of games really should be fun - but simply they aren’t, mainly for the reasons stated above, and actually it has surprised me. BioShock demo was cool - but the shooting part unexpectedly took the suspense out of the game, and I never bought it.
Call of Duty is damned fun.
It depends what you’re looking for, TBH. If you want a solid single player campaign, you’d do better to pick up CoD 2. Even on the higher difficulty levels, the single player portion of CoD 4 is over in a few nights, max.
You might want to give it another shot. Everything about Bioshock (with the exception of the death/resurrection system) is absolutely flawless. The story is one of the best in any game from the last decade or two, and that includes Planescape: Torment.
The story of Bioshock is great, but you are lead by the nose. As a shooter it’s rather lame, there isn’t much of a game there, it’s more like playing a movie. You absolutely have to go the ways they want you to, and there is little opportunity to setup your opponents. You can setup crossfires a little, but not much. There is NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING that is original about the gameplay. It is Deus Ex but far prettier, and moodier.
I tend to like “sandbox” style games. Games like GTA, Simcity, RTS strategy games, team shooters like Battlefield 2. Basically games where you’re given an environment and then basically free to do as you please within it.
Try Assassin’s Creed. It’s pretty fun. The plot is strange, and there are repetitive aspects, but it’s got a pretty large playing field that is a lot like GTA, where you have to open up sections, but when you do, you can get most anywhere.
Ok I won GoW. It’s actually pretty freakin simple on Casual mode.
I bought a used copy of FarCry Instincts Predator and I think I like it a lot more. It’s not as technically proficient as GoW (there are a couple of “holes” I got stuck in and had to restart), but I like how you can approach each goal in a variety of ways - from stealthily killing everyone with boobytraps to just sniping everyone from a tower.
