I seldom drink alcohol. Oh, sure; I drink pint after pint at parties. But how often do I go to parties? I’ve gone to the pub and started off with a couple pints of Guinness, a couple or three more pints with dinner, a shot or two of Jameson’s Irish whisky, and some bread pudding with whisky sauce for afters.
So I’m sitting around the flat, and I decide to open that one-pint, six-ounce bottle of Stone “Old Guardian” Barley Wine Style Ale. It’s a brown ale, sweet with a touch of bitterness. Quite good, actually; and it was better the more of it I drank. It’s also 9.91% alcohol.
I don’t know what it is. It could be that I should have eaten something first. It could be that I’m not in the habit of drinking. But whatever it is, I have a bit of a buzz on. I think I may have to get more of this stuff.
(FWIW, Hollingshead Beer Bar & Deli, where I bought this brew, serves a two-drink maximum of this particular ale.)
Okay, the buzz is off. Good flavour to that ale. I’ll have to remember it. (BTW: Hollingshead has good sandwiches. I only wish they’d serve the bratwurst during weekday lunchtime.)
You guys are pulling my leg, right? I mean, I got a little buzz; but the way Homebrew and Duke are talking, they make it sound as if barley wine has some sort of “reputation”.
(FWIW, I’ve never had it before. Never even heard of it.)
