Look at it this way. What type of community would you be living in if you didn’t have to pay to live there? Roads need building/paving, police/fire/ems need equipment and pay, etc, etc.
Stuff aint free.

Konstantine, read this thread, then tell me again what you think of this community. That is what this place is about. Fifteen bucks a year is nothing for that kind of kinship and support. Believe it.
I used to say “I’ll never pay to post” too, but then found this site. I was here before it became a paid site and had to really consider if I was willing to pay. By then I had been sucked into the SDMB vortex and found myself addicted. I really can’t think of another venue where I get the entertainment and thought provoking discussions that I get here. At a little over a dollar a month, it seems like a good value to me. That’s why I paid.
Seriously, if you want to stay and can’t afford it, you can get your membership subsidized by another generous member. Why don’t you use your 30 day free trial and then report back here before you make a decision?
Last we were told, even with the pay-to-post, the boards are still in the red. That’s how high the bandwidth usage is here.

Of course, none of us can tell you whether this board is worth fifteen bucks a year to you. If you decide that it’s not, well, that’s your decision, and we can’t fault you for it. But the first month is free, and I know that you can afford that. So at the very least, enjoy your free month. At the end of that time, make your decision, and if you happen to decide to stay, we’ll be happy for you. But at least give us that time before you make a final decision, ok?

Actually, Zebra, “vigalinate” is my favoritest newsome word!! I love the sound of it. “Vigalinate”. 
And Konstantine, just to reiterate what others have said: Hang around for a while, see what you think. If at the end of 30 days you decide it isn’t worth the fifteen bucks, then leave and we won’t think the worse of you (honest!). And if you do decide to stick around, there are all sorts of options to get your account paid. So don’t sweat it! 
The SDMB costs $1.25 a month to be a new member. This is upsetting?
A basic cable TV package would cost me around $45 a month and this place is far more entertaining.
Hijack, but–seriously? The Board is still “in the red”? If that’s the case, I’d honestly be concerned about the long-term viability of this place. The Reader can’t bail us out forever, can they?
If the unthinkable happens, we could always go back to BBBoy and this time Tuba wouldn’t need to pay for it.
I was wondering when someone would post this one. This one still makes me cry when I read it.
Actually, we are contributing a trickle of revenue to the Chicago Reader. We’re a long way from being a major profit center, but that’s not why the Reader let us do our thing to begin with.
I can’t say for sure but I think we are covering our expenses at least, which are higher now that we are not on the Reader server; it’s always more expensive to go outside. However, we had eaten most all the capacity on their server, so it was a necessary move to give them access.
I would hope that our guest would see our community and want to be a part of it; it’s truly quite a remarkable group. I learn something every day from our members and feel honored to be a part of this crazy thing.
If you don’t care for our reindeer games, well damn, not much we can do for you.

Well, you’re not obligated to stay for a membership. As in, you can have your free month and then just choose not to join up. We (I) prefer that you do, but if you can’t that’s fine. Also, there are a few members here who also would donate money for you to have one. All the more reason to stick around and get to know people. Plus you can’t find any other MB on the net that has the knowledge and info of the people here.
Looks like Konstantine isn’t coming back, kids. S/he hasn’t posted in three days. Shame.
