Wow, too much bandwidth! What to do?

Harmonix, I’m not aware of any outfit that will officially sell you that much bandwidth over a cable modem. 3.5mbps from Comcast (for ~$90+/month) is the highest I’ve heard of, but it’s not in my area. Perhaps there are others I don’t know about (but since they’re not in my area, it’s a bit moot for me).

I’d guess that, unofficially, you may get higher bandwidth on some systems; for example I know someone using Time/Warner in FL that claims he gets nearly 20mbps on a good windy day, where the bandwidth he officially pays for is the same as mine.

But supposedly the latest trend with DOCSIS modems is to VAP everyone at the modem to the speed they paid for, so that bandwidth hogs don’t spoil the show for everyone. Dslreports has a short note in thier cable modem faq about this, but I’d love to know more about how this works.

I’d happily pay more for higher bandwidth, but Charter/Pipeline doesn’t sell anything above 1.5mbps/128k (and I agree that 128k u/l is rank, but it’s still 4x what I had before, I can deal). My guess on the low u/l speed is that the ISPs are trying to not let people use thier account to host servers 7 domains; supposedly DOCSIS also places limitations on upload speeds, but it’s not clear to me if this has been amended by later revs of DOCSIS.

I downloaded Grand Theft Auto two days ago. (They’re giving it away).

328 MB in less than 28 minutes.

Try going to the Windows update site & getting your patches - it’s painless.

I don’t know how I lived without broadband before.

Harmonix finishes kicking sand in squeegee’s face and walks off with his girlfriend

Here in Aus, all I could get on cable was 15k a sec u/l. They did that deliberately so you couldn’t set yourself up as a file server.

Bastards. The main reason I got cable was for uploading for my website work. It was hellish uploading 80Mb files that took so bloody long.

OK - I’ll bite, it’s your job??

Kazaa!!!

But only for legitimate downloads.

Just did the download, 328 MB in exactly 23 min 40 sec. Woohoo!

Movie trailers!

Update every application you have!

Other things we can’t speak of!

I should’ve figured They’d have changed things by now. back 2 or 3 years ago when I was looking into cable the official statement was up to 15 mbits – not guaranteed.

Most DSL people I know cap you at what you pay for. according to pacbell I supposedly live close enough to their central office that I can get a full 8 mbit down/1.5 up! but it costs like 200 dollars =(.

Read the thread, I wasn’t kicking sand in anyone’s face.

…tonight on Thin Skin Theater, we have…

Oh, try that one WWW. website where they are NAKED and read the NEWS. It’s one of those .COM companies. Now, what was the name again?

Check out the quicktime website too. They have the newest trailers all grouped together for your convenience. Also go to www.whatisthematrix.com and check out the animatrix shorts they’re hosting. Other then those, the only thing I can think of is online gaming. That’s really the only thing you NEED a cable for (patience is a virtue when it comes to downloading on my 56k).
