Wow! I tried out Yahoo’s voice chat tonight with my friend from NC. It was unbelievable. Absolutely crystal clear (and she was using a freebie microphone). In the chat screen, there’s a little meter so you can tell when the other person is done talking, then you talk (walkie talkie style). I’ve tried a few “free phone” services, but my bandwidth sucks and they didn’t work well. This thing is like having a free phone call! We got used to it’s workings in just a few minutes, and we were chatting away.
Anyway, it’s a lot of fun to try out. (Thanks to Kelli and Ang., who helped me test it the other night!)
Go to Yahoo and get yourself a Yahoo ID (sign up for thier free e-mail). Then download Yahoo messenger and you’re on your way. Add someone to your friend list, then initiate a voice chat with them. Very cool stuff.
If anyone tries this out, let me know what you think. If you are using another voice chat service that you like, let me know. I’m interested in what voice options there are out there!
*TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Six months, five days, 17 hours, 53 minutes and 35 seconds.
7549 cigarettes not smoked, saving $943.73.
Extra time with Drain Bead: 3 weeks, 5 days, 5 hours, 5 minutes.
I use it to talk to my family all the time. They are just out of local calling range. Not that it matters because I’m online all the time anyway and they can never get through. So they just call me up, leave a message on my internet answering machine that says, “Get on Yahoo” or something, and then we chat. It’s decent.
MSN Messenger allows for clear voice chats (without the walkie-talkie feature–you can both talk at once) and free PC to phone calls that are clearer than Dialpad and without the annoying Java.
