Has anyone else heard this? Mariah Carey has decided to cover Def Leppard’s “Bringing On the Heartbreak.” I saw the video to this day-glo abortion the other day. Even for a cheesy cover, it sucks. This is Manos: The Hands of Fate released as a single.
Actually, last Christmas, when my wife and I were shopping in New York, I heard a female vocalist on the store stereo singing a familiar sounding melody… and I found myself thinking “That sounds like Def Leppard. But it couldn’t be…”
But it was. It was a mellow, Norah Jones-style rendition of “Bringing on the Heartbreak!” And, surprisingly, I thought it was a pretty nice rendition.
I haven’t heard it again since, but… was Mariah Carey’s rendition available last December, or did she just record it recently? If it wasn’t Mariah, I’m curious who that female vocalist was.
P.S. Some vocalists will surprise you with their song selection- on her current concert tour, I’m told Norah Jones is doing a mellow rendition of AC/DC’s “Ride On.”
Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nail’s “Hurt” this year, and Dolly Parton recently covered “Stairway to Heaven,” both with a fair amount of success. So I could see somebody deciding that Mariah Carey covering Def Leppard would be the next big thing. I’m not a Mariah Carey fan, or a Def Leppard fan, and I haven’t heard the song in question, so I can’t comment on the merits of the result.
They should pass a law where once a month the people of the U.S. get to vote someone out of the country survivor style. After this Mariah Carey would be a shoo-in for a unanimous offing.
I actually like it. I thought it was surprising she managed to find a catchy tune to sing, since I thought she was so over. Wonder if I know the Def Leppard version?
Is it only me who’s thinking “what’s the big deal?”. This isn’t Manowar taking on Nessun Dorma, it ain’t Pat Boone soiling Smoke on the Water, it’s some pop tart retooling a song by one of the more vacuous hard rock bands of the 80’s.
BTW Ride On was originally a fairly laid back semi acoustic number. So Ms Jones hasn’t really deviated that far. Now if she’d done Whole Lotta Rosie…
What’s worse, Mariah Carey doing Bringin’ On the Heartbreak or… Celine Dion doing You Shook Me (All Night Long)?
As much of a day-glo abortion (I love that!) as Carey’s cover may be, the image of Celine attempting to be a rocker at the last VH1 Diva thing, shaking her non-existent butt and thrusting her thick-as-a-twig arm in the air while attempting (and failing) to channel AC/DC will be burned in my brain forever in the category entitled “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”
