i am using AOL 9.0. i was at this message board (not SDMB, the one in the link) which is a vBulletin message board just like SDMB. i had just posted a reply. it was showing that pages that says something like “your post has been posted. if it is a poll, you will be allowed to… blah, blah, blah…” so, i closed the window using Ctrl+F4. all of a sudden, the thread to which i was posting pops up in an internet explorer window, and another, and another, faster than i could close them. i tried to close AOL and i tried to log off and i tried to turn off the computer via the windows XP start menu. i tried to use Ctrl+ALT+Delete, but that didn’t work. in fact, the task manager window froze up and the top part that says “applications processes performance networking users” completely disappeared. i ended up flipping the switch on the electric adaptor/surge protector thing my whole computer system is plugged into. so, what just happened? is there something wrong with my computer? is it a virus? or is it just that particular site screwing up (that very site has done this to me bfore but never to the point that i had to turn off the power to the computer.)?
You’re using AOL, that’s the problem.
In all seriousness, I bet if you downloaded a popup stopper, that problem would go away. The Google Toolbar does this, and can be downloaded here.
No, I doubt that is the problem. What gypsymoth3 describes has happened to me several times on Win2K with IE5.5
sorry I can’t contribute any solution. I end up rebooting when this happens to me
well, for the record, i wasn’t running IE when this happened. so, unless IE just decided to figure out what site i was at and compulsively load it, or maybe the ALT+F4 combination triggered something, i have no clue.
Java bomb.
Perhaps you cut off a java or javascript program in midstride.
While there are java routines that constantly open windows I doubt that is what was intended. It happened because you closed the program before the end of program was reached.
For example have many folders open on your desktop. Delete one folder but before the video screen is refreshed open something in that deleted folder. Watch OS crash.
Have you been able to duplicate it?
i haven’t WANTED to duplicate it. i was hoping someone else would.
