WTH? Palmetto.

So here’s the thing. I went to Wal-Mart to buy a few groceries. I wanted Pimento cheese spread. (I know simple to make your own, but I like the taste of the pre-prepared, so sue me) I was comparing the 3 brands they had:
Mrs.Weavers,
Great Value (store brand)
And number 3, I swear to God it was ‘Palmetto cheese’ not Pimento cheese. Is that a thing or is it a humongous typo?
They had on the shelf at least 30 tubs of it.
Am I crazy?

Thank you. I am not crazy. If I had of had my glasses on I coulda looked closer. Folks were around me so I moved on.

I’ve never heard of pimento cheese.

It’s an American thing, AFAIK. It’s a cheese spread made with pimentos (red peppers.) Party snack type of thing to eat with crackers, or on sandwiches. See here.

A southern specialty.

Don’t feel bad. On a recent trip we stopped at a small con-chain convenience store on the way home to get gas and grab sandwiches for lunch. They had home made (well, store made) sandwiches with printed labels. Some of them were labeled “Tuma and Swiss”. I thought it was a typo for tuna, but turned out it was a sandwich with two kinds of cheese and no meat.

Get this man some supplies, stat!

ETA: BTW, last year I discovered Blue Moose Green Hatch Chile Cheddar Spread; it’s the freaking bomb.

Pimento cheese helps me get through Lent.

StG

Invented in the North.

Really? And here I thought my old Granny invented it.

Oh, my, that sounds divine!

I slather it on freshly heated naan; I don’t know that I’d call it heavenly, but it’s pretty ddamned good.

I’m at the point where I need my glasses at the grocery store. Not sure why packagers need such tiny type for ingredients and instructions on how to prepare, but I find it to be inconvenient.

The Palmetto name comes from the nickname of the State of South Carolina - The Palmetto State. Palmetto refers to the official state tree, the Sabal Palmetto palm tree.

The only thing I think of when I hear the word “palmetto” are the humongous flying roaches we have down here. Adding cheese to the equation pushes me over the line from mildly queasy to full body dry heaves

Beckdawreck, were you picturing a spreadable paste made of giant bugs? <urp>

Palmetto trees are found South Carolina. This product appears to be made in Pawley’s Island, SC.

You didn’t think of simply Googling it before starting a thread?

One can, but sometimes asking online can start a conversation and even lead to others discovering what you were curious about. Witness Northern Piper’s post; a small hole in hir ignorance has been filled.

What, no Price*s!?
