WWII: Comedy in the Pacific

I just thought of another one and missed the deadline to add it to my last post.

The Private Navy of Sgt. O’Farrell - Bob Hope (possibly his worst comedy)

OK, one more, it just came to me.

South Sea Woman - Burt Lancaster and Chuck Conners

and I suppose;

Anchors Aweigh could qualify since the ship they get off of at the beginning of the film is in the Pacific, and if you want to stretch it a bit more since California touches the Pacific Hollywood Canteen might qualify.

Yep, you’re right…he’s permanently horizontal these days. :frowning:

Follow the Fleet with Fred and Ginger, plus Lucille Ball and Harriet Hilliard, later Harriet Nelson. Plenty of clever banter, to say nothing of *Let’s Face the Music and Dance. *

Since this has gone way off the OP, let me add in a terribly maligned and underrated wacky WWII comedy. I lOVE 1941, and dammit, I don’t care who knows it!

And if you remember the Japanese sub was definitely in the Pacific as was the Farris wheel after a while.

Do you mean a Ferris wheel or a Ferrous wheel? :smiley:

That makes two of us, brother. I’ve listened to the commentary on 1941, and Spielberg moans about his film being a ‘failure’. Well, yeah; it was. But he should have said, ‘Yeah, it was a failure at the boxoffice; but it’s a great film and I’m proud of it! Money isn’t everything.’ It’s a hilarious picture with a great soundtrack and a lot of memorable lines and scenes. I keep thinking I need to watch it again, if I can find the time.

I “like” the film. It’s OK. I think it could have been a great film, but in my mind, it falls short of that category. I think Spielberg needed to rein in a handful of his actors (Belushi and Williams come immediately to mind) a bit for it to have been really great. When the film came out, I so wanted it to work, but it didn’t quite. Personal opinion, of course.

It was the whole Ackroyd tank subplot that didn’t work for me. Other parts were excellent; Slim Pickens on the sub, Ned Beatty vs the sub, Christopher Lee vs the sub captain…

I’m seeing a theme here.
