The OP might care to read my own family’s brush with Nazism.
Yes, just work from Flickr, choosing the largest size if you have to. The scans are very high quality, and when enlarged sometimes reveal the small loops or other marks that distinguish letters from each other.
However, I am at a loss with regard to virtually all of the material from Palestine. One or two of them I’m not sure is even in German or English, and on the others I can’t tell much from the handwriting.
Yahoo’s really not bad in my experience. I virtually never get spam in my other accounts, nor any other kind of intrusive or annoying behavior. And I’m pleasantly surprised to learn how well Flickr can display documents.
It’s well worth it in my opinion; I think it’s about the best free picture server out there.
Have you thought about sending images to the Holocaust Museum? They might be interested in seeing them.
Yes!
Another vote! Thanks, Johnny!
Friends, with all the so-called “Holocaust Deniers” spouting their vitriol, we need very badly to come back at them.
Again, if I am “over-stepping my bounds”, please forgive me, but these letters are very important, so we never forget.
Bill
It won’t help. They deny there were ovens and then deny pictures of smoke coming out of the chimneys.
A good thread, thanks for sharing!
Sorry Carny (OK widdat?:))
But yes it will!
Eisenhower himself marched the Germans through Dachau just because he thought/said: "One of these days some sonofabitch is gonna say this didn’t happen!" (or words to that effect)
The “deniers” will NEVER win!
Not EVER!
Absolutely. You might also send copies to the local university- their history department would probably love to see these.
Hey Spec,
Started doing that and managed 11b, so I will continue in that way!
Thanks!

PS: Yeh, some of those “Old German” ones are hard to read, aren’t they?
GYZ?
If we just can’t do 'em all, would you be willing to submit them to some other entity for translation?
Not saying I don’t have faith in my Doper bro’s and sis’s, just saying that some of the “tougher” ones might could be looked at by someone else?
Just a suggestion.
The ones in “Old-German” I forwarded to my Uncle. He has not yet responded.
Q
Don’t be sorry, I’d be delighted to be wrong.
And don’t call me Carny.
Gotcha!
The whole name then?
Q
I was too late to edit; call me CP.
Sadly, sixty years later when most of the Survivors are dead, Heads of State deny the Shoah. They won’t recant, and your average American racist who denies is just to damn stupid or crazy to admit the truth.
CP it shall be!
But we don’t care about the average American racist, do we?
I, for one, would face one down and show him the pictures as I die.

Never try and teach a pig to sing.
It wastes your time, and it annoys the pig.
I converted to marry Mrs. Plant.
In Brookline, between the Bet Din, however you spell it, and the Mikvah, we browsed through a bookstore. I saw the cover of a Holocaust book, with a picture of a statue of contorted, burned bodies on the cover. I started shaking and had to go outside.
I had always thought I could take care of my family no matter what happened, but I realized at that point there were millions of people who wanted us dead simply because we were Jews. If the government decided to put us in death camps, there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. “Ship of Fools” indeed.
I don’t want to fuck with these people. I just want to ignore them.
Sorry, please carry on.
CP,
All the more reason, my friend.
All the more reason.
Bill
I’m planning on doing something along those lines; exactly what route will depend on how many letters remain untranslit/translatable and the content of the translated portion. Submitting the scans to a history dept (UW would be the most convenient for me, but suggestions would be welcome) and/or Holocaust museum are looking pretty likely as an eventuality.
This thing keeps gathering momentum; I can’t thank you folks enough. And don’t worry, there’s no pressure to take on more than you can handle: whatever’s left will be taken care of one way or another. No stopping it at this point! I’d welcome any suggestions about how to process/organize/present this stuff, so please don’t hesitate to PM me.
Got your initials wrong, sorry. GZY!
Working…

I took a stab at #42 (now up on Flickr), which was incredibly hard. Of the approx. 100 words in that letter, I could only decipher about half with some level of accuracy. Ironically, the only sentence that I think I could fully read goes as follows: ‘I hope, that this time my handwriting is easier to read’!
Won’t have much time in the coming week but I continue to follow the progress made on this project. I find, though, that I’m not going to get much further with the things that are up now - or at least not further than with #42, which is not very far. How is everybody else coming along?
Did #10 too - wasn’t much better.
